No player customisation or progression is pretty disappointing. Have they said if they are adding it in future?
I think the lack of progression (i.e., upgrades) is part of the design philosophy. They want everyone on a level playing field. So I doubt they'll add upgrades. They might add some player customizations that don't affect performance, though. New pants.
I am so happy about the fact everyone is on the same playing field. Now when you play friends its who is the best not how built up your character is. Makes me think of Links on the OG XBOX.

It's really just a cop out for lack of depth. Yes, it is great at times to play others on equal footing and the EA series has always allowed just that with tournaments set where everyone uses the same golf pro or you can easily do h2h with others the same way.
But golf really shines when you have strengths and weaknesses, risk and reward, and the ability to create a golfer that plays how you desire. Different courses play to different golfers strengths whether it be a long course favoring long hitters, a tight fairway course playing to control golfers, etc. In the same way a racing game would be dull if everyone had the same car (while still fun to run stock car races), variety on styles, strengths, weaknesses, choices of the clubs your carry along with the brands are things that even an arcade title like Power Star Golf realizes is as important to creating depth as a full featured title does.
I do understand the direction The Golf Club is aiming at by designing the variety via the courses we are expected to create but that may only go so far in covering up the lack of other features players desire.
Well I for one don't want a game to be decided on because my opponent can out-drive me by 50yrds in a video game. Now on a real course that is different. If we go back to games like Links on the PC and then the OG XBOX there were no need for building up a character and the games were very addictive. I found that golf games got too arcade'y with building up characters. I am looking for a true golf sim now. I think what will give this game depth is the course creator and being able to download and use user created courses. It may take some time to get some good ones but they will come if the community is big enough, plus in one article I read the dev said they are hoping to be able to share courses across LIVE, PSN, and PC. We will see how that turns out as I believe Trials is doing something similar.
Sounds like neither Kerosene31 or Haggis had any experience with TW14 or they wouldn't be making those statements. TW14 offered a new Simulation difficulty level that rivals anything I've played on Links or any other golf game previous. And there was no grind to level up a golfer if you didn't want to do so. Nor would Haggis put much faith in the simulation value of The Golf Club since they have it dumbed down by making it nearly impossible to miss a fairway off the teebox and sifting through all the ridiculous arcade-style created courses is a job unto itself.
Not to say I don't have hopes of enjoyment from The Golf Club because it does have potential. They just made a partnership with Greg Norman and his course design team so I am hopefully there will be a wider variety of tools added to make more unique realistic courses short of the 4 themes they now offer. As it stands now, there is no way to make a decent reproduction of a real life course given the course creator tools in the game thus far. But you sure can make some wonky designs and that seems to be what most users are doing.
You are right I didn't play TW14, didn't realize they had that mode. Good to know. As for The Golf Club do you have first hand knowledge of it being dumbed down?
Yes, I do. I bought the early access the day it became available in early June and have put in a hundred or so rounds through about 5 different builds they have offered.

I've played every TW game since 09. There was nothing real about '14
Nothing real? Real courses...about 40 of them all licensed. Real licensed tournaments including all 4 majors. Real golfers. Real equipment. (None of these real things are in The Golf Club). And a real challenge on simulation mode in TW14. Would love to play you a round on sim mode in TW14 and see you shoot better than 10 under. Standard fare in The Golf Club to do so since you can't miss a fairway like reality and the TW14 has challenge like that by the boatload. I have no clue what you are describing by saying nothing was real about TW14.
