The Initiative’s Perfect Dark

Sounds like its going to be 3rd person with an emphasis on mobility.

Such a good franchise for a reimagined blockbuster of a epic scale. And it has been so long that while the bones are there it allows free reign to do something fresh.

Eh, I don't know if I want that. There is a huge hole in games right now with no MGS nor Splinter Cell.

Seems like a perfect fit for PD to take that genre.

Plus, if it has a few elements, fine I guess, but I don't want mirror's edge nor sunset overdrive(I love that game too) perfect dark.

Perfect Dark was awesome because of the mission structure that scaled with the difficulty setting(difficulty not being more damaged caused by AI that is more acurate) and the crazy guns that all had secondary fire modes.

I was thinking that I really hope they took a hard look at the way AI enemies reacted in the 64 version. Dropping their weapons and surrendering to you, pulling pistols on you after dropping their primary once you get closer, holding their wounded body parts etc...

So its first or 3rd person? I am so confused. I prefer 3rd person.

In the developer interview they talk about camerawork and how to be different from traditional firsts person shooters, with an emphasis on the physicality of action, like GoPro footage.
I hope is not a 1st person view, that will already be a big disappointment before the game is even shown.

The original is 1st person though. That would literally be turning away all fans of the original game. A 3rd person game of a beloved FPS would probably be a financial disaster.

I've never actually played the game (nor PDZ), but I think I know enough to say this.

This is a pretty decent review (but it's not short):

I'm thinking about finally playing this OG on Xbox now. Looks better on the One X than I would have expected. I know that it will look at least as playable on XSX.

So, what I think is going on with the new PD might to be sort of like a 3rd person bullet time. Well, not sure if it will actually drop to slow-mo, but maybe. For one, I totally get the fact that certain action elements are better in 3rd person. Also, stealth is WAY better in 3P too, IMO.

The problem that I do see, is trying to do both of these things in a single game is that in the gargantuan task of trying to appeal to gamers accustomed to either approach. They basically risk alienating fans of either types of gameplay, in the process.

I would be very skeptical about this game if it weren't for the plethora of talent working on it. I'm all for brand new gameplay, actually. Honestly, gaming so often has an originality problem these days. Gears showed that you can kinda hybridize gameplay, and it'll work. I'm not sure why the envelope hasn't been pushed further, honestly. I'm definitely hoping for the best. I'm gonna catch up on the OG game, in the meantime. It's been a gaming bucket list pick for a while.

...and I forgot to say that although I haven't played PDZ either, I know that they implemented some kind of 3rd person cover in that game. I feel like people did not like this? Maybe it wasn't implemented well enough or something. I do think that the game supposedly had more problems than that. I'd like to hear what anyone liked or didn't like about that. Not sure I actually want to pick up that one after the OG or not.

It's so unlike traditional 1st person shooters that it's 3rd person amirite?

Maybe they'll pan out often and with the action and give you first to third person view transitions. For example, if she wall runs (third person) and flips you'd return to upside down to aim in first person. Or if she runs and slides you'll see her move in third person? There's alot they can do to spice things up.

Yep, exactly. What I'm trying to figure out is if it's automatic when you run (like how Gears pans out), or it's like a sort of a "hold left trigger to zoom out for more controls" situation. I kind of hope it's more manual.

"financial disaster" sounds a little dramatic. The series hasn't had an entry in over a decade. If everyone hasn't forgotten what the series was by now. I don't think it has much a legacy to adhere to when its two games are almost purely products of their time (perfect dark 64 being very much a Rare shooter of the 90's and zero getting modern contrivances with its 3rd person instances and cover system)

However, I am very biased, as I honestly just want this new game to be a deus ex clone. I'd probably make any argument that clears the way for that.
