Xbox also needs to be less FPS oriented as much as they need to be less Male-oriented, and this game isn't doing anything to move the meter on that front. I'd love to see an xbox answer to God of War, Days Gone or Ghost of Tsushima...
Less FPS oriented, yes. But let the developers create their own characters as they see fit, don't shoe-horn genders into a game that doesn't require it and make it feel forced. Perfect Dark would make a fantastic Third-Person game, but God of War and TLOU are very boring games.

Microsoft's third person games that I am aware of:

State of Decay
Gears of War
Quantum Break
Fallout
Recore
Starfield
Elder Scrolls
Contraband (possibly, as Just Cause is 3rd person)
New Fable
Doom Eternal
Skyrim
Flight Simulator
Forza Games
Hellblade
Psychonauts
Minecraft
Grounded

Probably missing some.

Diversity.

With some of the aquisitions the Xbox future does seem skewed to to FP view and shooters in general.

Would love to see MS get back in sports titles. Links 2021 anyone?

On the gender front, eh. Use what works best for tge character.
It's time to bring back XSN! I know there's other companies making these types of games, but I LOVED Amped back in the day.

Really? Contraband is unknown. Skyrim, Fallout, Doom are all First Person. Forza games, really? Not actually any view point, but most options are more first person. Is Starfield 3rd person? No, it has both.

Skyrim, Doom Eternal, Starfield and FO also have third person as an option.

Having both = having third person if third person is an option.

I put Contraband as unknown, but from the makers of Just Cause who love third person, so it's a guess for me.

Still waiting on some gameplay or a proper trailer for this game.

How does this game not “move the meter”? It has a female lead and I thought it is supposed to be third person.

My post is being severely misinterpreted it seems. I am saying nothing about the 'disparity of protagonist genders' or whatever. I am saying I feel the need for MS to move away from depending so heavily on FPS games is equal to what they seem to feel the need to move away from reliance on male protagonists. Perfect Dark is a first person game and so does not move the meter away from MS's FPS reliance.

Because there are an abundance of FPS games on xbox and a significant lacking of high level 3rd person, melee focused action games.

I am not saying anything about what gender games should focus on. I was saying their continued reliance on FPS games is as much of an issue as what Microsoft are saying the gender disparity is. I really don't care about gender so long as it doesn't actively contribute to a lack of believability in the game. What games are and aren't boring is subjective, but to me, God of War and TLoU are less boring than a lot of FPS games, so...

Did they add a 3rd person option to DOOM eternal since I last played it? Maybe in the online mode some of the enemy characters you play as are done so from a 3rd person perspective but that in no way makes it a 3rd person game. Those do not count as legitimate 3rd person games imo. The option of 3rd person doesn't make a game 3rd person, especially when, like all the games listed here, the 3rd person option is clearly inferior, bordering on unplayable in some cases. Those games were obviously all designed to be played in first person....

The gear on her belt makes her appear more equipped for working a standard community police offer foot patrol than a secret agent heist, but I assume this piece is just trying to establish an overall "look".

Maybe she starts as a beat cop or something, lol...

Until they show some legit gameplay and it looks to be doing something truely unique, confirmation that this game is an FPS has stymied nearly all interest I may have once had in this title.

I know I'm in a very small minority but I'd much rather they brought back Kameo than Perfect Dark lol. I liked the 360 launch game but it was also one of the better looking games that came out at launch (along with Kameo) so that may have been part of it. The N64 game sold roughly 2.5 million which is more than twice as many copies as the 360 game, it sold about a million copies and that was back in 2005. I know nobody is talking about kameo these days but they aren't talking about perfect dark either, it just seems like that studio should be working on something else. I'm pretty sure they are only making this because they feel the need to have more female leads in their games, Spencer nearly said as much.

“I think it’s awesome for us that we can focus on a female protagonist in our lineup, we don’t have a lot of that in our first party,” he said. “I think Joanna offers a lot of modern opportunities that I’d love to see the team focusing on.”

I'd like to see Kameo come back as well but it would be from a different studio. Microsoft doesn't have the studios for that type of game outside of Rare who wants to make new IP.

Perfect Dark is exciting to me. Sci-fi, cyberpunk spy game. The OG was the spiritual successor to Golden Eye and this could be an open-world Golden Eye with more creative freedom.

I would much rather they did something "cyberpunk" in 3rd person, the first person thing killed most of my hype for Cyberpunk 2077 before CDPR finished the job by releasing a game in such bad shape.

We'll see I don't see using the name Perfect Dark doing much for the game to be honest, I doubt a good chunk of people who played the first two are even gamers anymore and it's not like either game had a huge audience anyway.

What if Ninja Theory gave it a go? Either in unreal or have turn10 and playground loan them the engine and assets but they tweak it to their art desires

I guess we'll have to wait and see. Perfect Dark on the N64 is one of the highest-rated games of all time. It averaged 97 Metacritic. It comes with recognition from older gamers. Essentially PD is a new IP in all but name but I do think the name gives people an idea of what they're going for in terms of setting.

I think now that NT has creative autonomy, they won't be messing with other people's licenses. Listening to the devs, they really want to carve a unique path. Which is the challenge in reviving any old IP. Have to find the right studio. One that understands the IP, is passionate about it, and has the talent to execute. Really difficult to find that mix.

Sumo seemed like a good candidate to farm out RARE IPs to however now that they've been purchased by TenCent, I doubt Microsoft relies on them for anything outside of support work.
