The UnionVGF PS4 general impressions thread! Got a PS4? Share your impressions.

downloads depend on your internet...

do you mean installing?

Nah downloads on the PS3 can be awfully slow no matter how good your internet is.
Sounds like downloading from the PS4 servers is faster.

Yeah, UPS is frustrating around here. Sometimes they deliver by noon, other times it's late afternoon. It's also weird you can't see PSN friends on PS4 from your PS3.

UPS has a bunch of idiots working for them. They actually delivered my PS4 to the wrong apartment. Luckily they are neighbors of mine and came down and brought it to me.

Build quality seems very good (no wobble), the system itself is so small its almost unbelievable that its a nexgen console. I found it tricky to turn on at first with buttons at the front that offer no feedback. They are touch sensitive like the launch PS3. Once I was all updated and signed into PSN everything flowed so quick. The controller feels good and analog sticks have just the right amount of stiffness to them. I'm still trying to figure things out but overall I'm very pleased with my new PS4.

One other thing, boot-up sequence is nice and fast and you can begin gaming almost immediately after turn on the system. Great work on the part of Sony software engineers.

How about the headphones mute button. :p

FYI, you can't install preorder bonus downloads until you stick the game in. Installs are pretty awesome from disc, starts the second you slide the disc in, and automatically installs in the back ground. Bitter face is super quick.

Resogun is BEAUTIFUL. It was the first game I played, and I have no regrets about that!

Resogun:

Seems like a fun game. It's worth free, for sure. :-)

The speaker on the controller being used seemed incredibly frivolous and pointless. There was no need for it. Plus, it was weird that even though the audio was turned down on my system (so my wife could sleep), the speaker volume on the controller was surprisingly loud... and annoying. Why would I want some dinky sound coming out of my controller when I've spent literally thousands on my surround sound 7.2 system? Makes no sense to me.. and it was just a hassle/annoyance.

LOL it's so funny watching you try to pick a competitors product apart like that, I found the speaker to be kind of cool but then again I (like most people) haven't spent thousands of dollars on a surround sound system. I had one that was given to me as a gift that died last year so now I use a sound bar.

So guys that got a PS4. You've had it for a few hours now. How are you liking it? How are the games, how is the system? Lets get some more impressions going.
I'll ask a few specific questions:
1. Any one play Contrast? If so, are the reviews spot on are misguided? Same for Knack.
2. How does the controller feel in comparison to the ps3 dualshock? Better/worse/indifferent?

The controller is much much better, in every way. It's honestly the best controller I've ever used and that's saying something because other than the Dpad I loved the 360 controller. Really liking the system so far, I haven't gotten too far into too many games yet only because it was late last night when I got it and I didn't want to wake anyone else in the house up. I haven't tried contrast but I do have it downloaded.

My Razer Chimeras are working great although I haven't used the mic yet but I don't forsee any problems.

I actually thought the controller speaker added a nice new dimension to gaming when I tried it briefly with Resogun. It kind of gives more depth to gaming. I'll have to find out how to lower the volume though since I game in the bedroom and need to keep it down when wify is sleeping.

Some small things to note. After ejecting a disc the PS4 keeps a snug hold on it so there's no chance of it easily falling when stood vertically. As I mentioned before in another thread there a nice little friction click that holds the USB cord into the controller. I know my PS3 one fell out super easy.

BF4, Killzone and Fifa 14 all have day one patches. They take one to two minites to download and the system does it automatically.

Fifa 14 will go straight into an El Classico match while the game installs. If you quit it and go to menus it shows you an install progresd screen amongest the main page and takes 6 minintes to install before full game is avalible.
Pretty cool idea.

Ahahaha my first game of Fifa and the ball is invisible. Oh EA, you never fail to disappoint.
Edit - menus are super fast and subs are instant. At least they fixed that from last gen.

Controller:

Still feels like a PS controller, but much better than previous PS controllers.

I don't like the speaker (so far, every use for it is contrived and pointless), the touch pad doesn't seem very useful either (and in Killzone, it really could have just been buttons... 'swipes' were completely unnecessary), so the feature innovations don't seem of any real value (as I had expected), but the ergonomics of the controller, and the overall feel is much better than previous PS controllers.

I also didn't like the shiny surface of the area around the dpad and the buttons. Why would they do that? It just gets fingerprinted all up instantly.

I also do feel like the build quality is lower than the X1's, but that could be my bias speaking... It's just that it almost feels like a third party controller or something, compared to the super-high, best-in-class feel of the X1 controller.

But all in all, it felt great, and it was comfortable to use.

The light was a mild annoyance too, but not a meaningful problem.

At the moment the only way to use a custom profile pic is to link your facebook account and it uses that profile pic. I'll be creating a gaming only facebook account now for sure.

Netflix app:

Seems pretty standard. I haven't actually seen the X1 version, but compared to the 360 app, it's got some minor UPS and downs.

The layout is fine and functional. You can't see as many titles on the screen as you can with the 360 app, and yet it also appears to be more cluttered.

That said, it's nice that I didn't see any of the title cover art streaming issues I've noticed in the 360 version... Could be because there's just less visible, and therefore easier to ensure all on screen is streamed in accordingly, but don't know.

What do you like about the PS4 so far Flynn?

Also Flynn, curious if there's anything you notice that you think actually does beat the X1 or at least does something that the X1 doesn't and it's better for that.
