Nvidia CEO: Good VR 20 years away

"First of all, VR displays are a little too cumbersome. It has to be much more elegant, being connected by a wire has to be solved. The resolution has to be a lot higher. The physical worlds do not behave according to the laws of physics. The environment you’re in isn’t beautiful enough. We’re going to be solving this problem for the next 20 years.”

VR Is Too Expensive and Takes Up Too Much Room, Take-Two CEO Says

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/vr-is-too-expensive-and-takes-up-too-much-room-tak/1100-6440381/

VR devices like Oculus Rift are "anti-social." He said VR might appeal to core gamers, but may miss the much larger casual crowd.

"It's way too expensive right now," he said to an audience of analysts and investors. "There is no market for a $2000 entertainment device that requires you to dedicate a room to the activity. I don't know what people could be thinking. Maybe some of the people in this room have a room to dedicate to an entertainment activity, but back here in the real world? That's not what we have in America."

"We have like $300 to spend on an entertainment device and we do not have a dedicated room.We have a room for a screen, a couch, and controllers," he added. "We don't have something where you stand in a big open space and hold two controllers with something on your head--and not crash into the coffee table. We don't have that."

Zelnick went on to say there are "any number of constraints" to virtual reality taking off. This isn't to say he's completely down on VR in general, however.

"I'm not unexcited; I'm just saying it remains to be seen," he said. "There are impediments."

I'm about 3-4 days away from my Rift shipping and I'm excited to get my hands on it but I don't think it will be replacing traditional games any time soon.
Even if the tech was cheap, there's still many games that I love that will never be a good fit for VR. Saying that, I don't think it's a gimmick. VR games can offer immersion flat games could never hope to achieve. I think within 3-5 years, many who frequent Union will own a VR headset.

It's extremely early and there are legitimate issues to be solved like form factor, price and wires. Doesn't conclude as a gimmick tho, just early technology. Kinda clickbaitey.

Last VR I tired was in 1991. Virtuality arcade. The plane one. I'm old.

I want to try all the new headsets and Gear VR as I have no idea what it is like today.

It's probably really cool but a bit shallow just like it was in 1991.

Cheapest would be Gear VR if you already have a new Samsung phone (S6/Note 5 and newer). Only a hundo, and some places give you one for free if you pick up a new phone.

Once you watch movies in bed or on a plane, you see the instant value, but games really have to be specific. There are some fun/beautiful/limited games, but nothing that will compete with a Doom or Halo. However, having your mind blown by how friggin' terrifying a game with weak graphics and simple execution like DreadHalls can be, it does hint at how much potential there is.

$2000 entertainment device? Need a dedicated room? Those two things are either not properly explained or bold face lies. VR isn't about standing up and walking around an empty room. I would have taken NVIDIA seriously on this if their argument had a less invalid claim.

It's DOA. Or, maybe it already is. I feel as though the people who already have it feel the need to say it's awesome to warrant their purchase.

Where has all the hype gone? There hasnt been too much noise about Oculus/Vive (which is kinda expected since they have launched), however, there has been barely a peep on the PSVR front lately.

Expect a lot of VR related info at e3 imo.

I have the GearVR and after the first day of trying it on my new S7 phone haven't picked it back up again since. Sold my Oculus for $1,300 on ebay and don't regret it one bit. I also have a PSVR on pre-order but will sell for a profit it in a heartbeat if it is in high demand at launch.

I do believe VR is going to bring some amazing things in the future but that future is still at least a followup version of all the headsets away.

VR needs:

1. Vastly improved resolution (probably 8k)
2. Super-high frame rate (probably 120fps)
3. Advanced Kinect-like functionality which puts you in your own virtual space, so you're not floating eyes... and so that you can see your own hands, fingers, etc... but with extremely low latency
4. Advanced Kinect-like functionality which seamlessly integrates your actual surroundings around you which you might actually 'hit' into your virtual world, so you don't accidentally bump them, and you're spatially aware of them.
5. Super-slim/comfortable headset
6. New controls innovations so that you don't have to hold a typical controller, and your movement/motions can actually impact the world in a way which feels natural, while considering the obvious disconnect that virtual objects cannot "stop" you, and actual objects not in your virtual world CAN.

Maybe something like that... but those are serious investments which I doubt will happen any time soon.

Until then, yeah, it's pretty gimmicky...

Gear vr isn't a baseline for vr experiences though. Did you try the rift before selling it?

It's a lot more common for people to trash it because they can't afford it.

Early tech does not equal gimmick. This is no tricky, vr is legit but early.

Everyone's gonna jump on the bandwagon when psvr and xb1.5 info releases and they're all about vr and 4k.

Needs more content at the moment, some must-play games or experiences.

Agreed. A lot of development and publisher companies are saying theyll support vr when it reaches more than a million users. I pre-ordered a rift on day one and am still waiting for it. Lol. It's a chicken and egg situation. It'll take time but it's still so early. I get it that some people want to wait, completely understandable. VR is here to stay this time tho and eventually AR will tie it all together.

Total gimmick.

Never mind the price, or lack of games. Where's all the chat about VR the last few months. Oculus finally released after a few years of hype and prototype vids. Dead already.

Even if VR headsets were all high powered $200 gadgets, I still don't see it taking off.

Oculus launched with 30 games titles on March 30, 2016. I don't know how that could ever be defined as "lack of games."

A lot of truth, but none of that makes VR a gimmick. If what take-two says is shared by most then how is showing stuff in that way going to attract attention? just saying.

The biggest issue I am seeing with VR, especially on Playstation, is the inclusion of motion control.

I'm not sure why they are pushing VR so hard when our next gen consoles can't even hit 1080p/60fps consistently (I know that's probably the reason for the quick upgrade cycle).

Naughty America will have a booth for VR porn at E3 2016
To discuss “how gamers utilize VR headsets for adult content.”

Porn site Naughty America will be showcasing adult VR demos at E3 2016.

“Naughty America is excited to attend E3 Expo in LA June 14-16 to demo and showcase the latest in adult VR content. Naughty America has been on the forefront of technological advancements from HD to 4k and now VR adoption as the first major adult studio to produce VR content,” said the site.

It will have reps ready to “discuss the expanding role immersive mobile content plays in adult entertainment, how gamers utilize VR headsets for adult content and explain the technological horizon,” according to its PR firm.

Last year, traffic to VR porn sites grew over 200 percent according to SimilarWeb.

Naughty America has its own VR headset, a variation on the Google cardboard headset, which it sells for $20.

Does VR porn have a place at E3, a show that is primarily about the video game and interactive entertainment business?

More games publishers have pulled back from the traditional E3 booths, opting to hold their own events and showcases to the press and the public rather than spend money on costly exhibition stands. Maybe that’s your answer, right there.

Be sure to check out our E3 2016 hub for all the news, videos, screenshots, interviews and much more, live and direct for this year’s show.

Awesome.

So people will strap on a helmet, watch a first person video of their fav pornstar and air hump.

"C'mon baby, give it to me harder. I don't feel a thing!"

"I don't feel anything either! I'm humping the air!"

Eh, you could argue the same for motion controls prior to Wii. There were tons of motion control gimmicks prior to Wii, but then when Wii made it explode, and both Sony/MS entered into the fray - it still didn't stick. It was a fad, and until/unless the tech makes more extremely large jumps - it's pretty gimmicky.

Everyone's gonna jump on the bandwagon when psvr and xb1.5 info releases and they're all about vr and 4k.

I completely disagree.

I think VR will see some success, since it's getting such a big push from the industry, but it's niche and probably will be for decades to come. It's expensive, it's uncomfortable, it has tons of limitation, it's not healthy, and ultimately the tech is early enough that - yes - it's a gimmick. It's a fun demo. It's a cool early peak at what may one day blossom into something more interesting... but ultimately, I'm completely with those who say VR is not the next big thing in gaming... it's the "motion gaming" of today.

Now, once it matures, and maybe even integrates with other compelling technologies, it may not be a gimmick... but right now, yeah - it's just a circus side-show that's worth a few bucks to see and experience, but not the daily bread-and-butter kind of entertainment traditional gaming is.

30 games isn't much, and a game like "Defense Grid", which is a stellar game, has no meaningful benefit being in VR, so that kind of a game barely counts.

There's not much VR content, and I don't know of any VR content that's super-unique/compelling to the VR experience... but happy to be proven wrong on that.
