What movies have you seen recently?

Deep Cover - Good

It's late 80's, early 90's action movie over the top acting. So, it's fun.

The Criterion Collection recently released a great collector's edition bluray of this. I was blown away when I was watching the special features and realized who the director of Deep Cover was.....

I like Deep Cover a lot, probably my favorite Laurence Fishburn performance.

BTW when I went to watch Shang Chi in the theaters, the action was SUPER BLURRY. Like low FPS blurry. Hurt to look at, and I'm not sure if I ever want to watch a movie in the theater again.

Edit: er...maybe it's just how it was edited/shot. Here's a grab from the trailer:

Sean Chi...8/10

I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I could've done without the CG mess at the end but otherwise it was very good.

Gotta grade horror movies on a curve IMO.
100%. I listen to what horror media / fans say, even then my own tastes often conflict with theirs You have to assume that standard critics are never going to rate any genre film highly. Critics hated essentially every major horror or comedy film that's considered a classic now.

I agree, but that's not what this particular discussion is about. It's the same old nonsense of white is black and I don't believe anything outside of my own mind even when presented with irrefutable evidence.

It's a 65% on Rotten. It's 35% on Metacritic. He is correct.
I did say nope because the 2 by chance horror reviews I came across for it highly praised it.

I will take the L for this.

I posted a few pages back that I don't go by reviews for movies and music.
Still a L regardless.

The genre has a fatal flaw...I mean who the f*** is genuinly getting scared watching them? Then add in that most horror movies are poorly made and written.

Aside from random jump scares I can't think of a movie that's genuinely scared me, games are a whole different beast for me though haha.

I prefer horror films that make you think, or give you a uneasy feeling while watching, or just plain creepy.

I mean we haven’t been truly scared since we were young growing up watch the old films that gave you nightmares lol.

Horror Audiences have a Fatal Flaw: Unreasonable Nostalgia

Horror Fandom makes it really hard to support horror genre film that can work on a wider spectrum of just making you feel 'scared' or felling 'fear'. I think the toolset gets narrowed down to Jump Scares, attempts at new Monsters or Slashers, or playing on common human phobias like fear of Spiders.

Attempts are made at Sci-Fi / Horror but it's hard to get as strong support for it, or worse the movie second guesses itself so hard it turns into a mess trying to appease hard horror fans.

I think there was also a brief time period in the 70s or early 80s when film production tools, visuals effects, or costume and makeup effects ramped up significantly. In that unique situation, adults who grew up on Black & White films may legit have been freaked out.

I also sort of wonder if the nature of puppetry Visual FX had an unintended 'Uncanny Valley' effect. An example for me is at a too young age I saw Tobe Hooper's LIFEFORCE. Okay so holy s*** at the space vampire lady full frontal naked through almost a whole movie. 😍

But the resurrecting vampire zombie guy puppetry freaked me the fvck out. I think this effect would still work today, except the standards from modern audiences would be much, much higher. Clunky or clumsy motion will not pass the laughable effects reaction. On the other hand, if something like this did have human level fluid motion but still fake, it would straddle the line between audience thinking it's laughable and "Jesus Christ is that a person or a model???". 😧 Again though, the crazy demands of the horror genre audience make it hard to decide whether to put serious funding behind new ideas or aim for a cheap slasher cash grab.

Or..... you try to do both while second guessing so hard you trip over yourself delivering a beautiful mess like Prometheus.

So the audiences fatal flaw is expecting the the very essence of the genre which is in turn the fatal flaw of the genre.

Really itching to see shang chi at the cinema but we're locked down and probably will be a bit longer, I hope they keep it at the movies longer.
