I really don't get the Geoff Keighley hate. He does fluff pieces about video games, but I think that he does them well. I mean, somebody has to do this kind of stuff! I have to wonder how many of you actually watched the piece he did on the Dual Sense? Geoff seemed pretty level headed, and even asked Sony's Eric Lempel some pretty good questions, I thought. At least for this kind of thing. I was appreciative that he backed up and asked him to elaborate this "PlayStation Promise" and "we've always believed in generations" bit, and asked why they are choosing something so different from Microsoft's current philosophy... and then it seemed like he just watched Lempel try to dig himself out for a while before offering him a helping hand with mentioning Jack and Dexter... The one example where they actually did build the game around the SSD. As far as fluff pieces go, I was cool with his assessment of what the controller was capable of, and he made it very clear that Astro's Playroom is a pre-downloaded game made to showcase plenty of examples, and some of those examples obviously won't be in most games, but maybe a game like J&D (again) might have a similar interactions at times, and with better graphics.

I look forward to him doing this kind of massaging on the Xbox brand, and even asking that same question in reverse to Phil (or whomever) at Microsoft. I expect he'll have just as much enthusiasm for Xbox, if not more. I'd personally rather not each console maker have their own banner-waving press people, and I honestly think that Major Nelson is really kind of boring. (Sorry)

totes, except I like Major Nelson...maybe because I’ve met him a few times at events and is a cool cat, as is Phil (bumped into him a few times too) so there’s that bias, for transparency ;)

I don’t hate him personally, but he’s definitely more of a Sony guy. Here are his separate reactions to the surprise XSX trailer (apparently he didn’t even know about it), vs the PS5 Godfall trailer.

Xbox fans like to think everyone treats the Xbox worse and unfairly. He might like Playstation more but so do most people.

And for some reason there are some who are pissed at him for leaking the X1X price

Geoff likes to make sweet sweet love to PS. It's nothing about console wars.

Maybe Xbox gamers feel slighted because we're constantly reading negative things.

Go into Youtube and search Playstation 5 - you get fluff pieces
Now do the same search for Xbox Series X - you get negative clickbait

Just my humble opinion of course, there's obviously no real way to measure this objectively (that anyone is going to bother with).

It is just my opinion, but it has been consistent for years and years. With Sony, assume they'll get it right, with Xbox, assume the worst.

I've seen zero speculation that MS could actually *gasp* outshine Sony this year. Sony's show was fine, but there's a lot of room there. I'm not saying it will happen, but it seems odd that nobody is saying that it could happen.

Now, maybe the odd situation of the gap between the shows is part of it. I don't think so though. If people want to show me anything positive written after Thursday, great, I'd love to see it and love to be shown to be wrong.

Just did it and found the results to be essentially the same. I'm sure the negatives ones are out there but if you go looking for them than yeah what do you expect?

I don't know who it is that you want to say that but I feel like that the assumption is that MS will be better. Which is a pretty big thing when you consider that there is plenty of reason to be skeptical of MS and no reason to be with Sony given that MS had their worst gen for first party and Sony had their best. And I think that is what I mean when I say fair. If the Xbox had a lot of negative coverage about their games for years its not unfair. It is deserved.

Hating Xbox must be profitable for YouTubers. I saw some of the biggest YT Xbots jumped ship at basically the same time. A whole new audience right there ready to agree with them

That's not to say that what they're saying about the Xbox brand isn't true. It's just taken to the extremes with very click-bait titles and often over the top fanboy content that they may or may not retract after receiving criticism.

I dont know if I've ever seen just a normal YT gamer that is critical of MS without crossing the line.

Price of game upgrades is a perfect example. MS has said that it doesn't want people to buy a game twice. Sony hasn't said anything.

If that were reversed, would people still not be talking about it? I would bet that people would be freaking out if Sony had announced this and MS didn't.

One of the IGN guys, "I don't mind buying a game twice". Am I the only one who sees this? If I'm way off base, by all means let me know.

I see... I remember seeing this now. I can kind of understand that, but it's just a game vs a console announcement, right? Also, if like me, I didn't even think that the HB clip could possibly be real-time my 1st viewing. I don't know, just seems a little harsh (and maybe people seem a little overly sensitive?), but I guess we'll see soon, how he handles things with Xbox.

Honestly, I feel like Microsoft always has an uphill battle with the media, so nothing new. I also feel like they absolutely do best when the chips are down, so not worried.

If you like gaming on Xbox and are excited for next gen, let go of Youtubers and general media narrative. Most are a not knowledable and are a year or 2 behind. Let Microsoft handle the messaging with their own marketing and more importantly, content.

The time to be pissed at Xbox as a brand was 2016 and 2017 specifically. Windows withdrew the Xbox budget and it showed. Based on lack of funding, you could see that the next 3 to 4 years would be nothing but Halo, Gears and Forza and even those franchises were deteriorating based on rushing releases.

The most important thing about Thursday isn't the surprises. I think there will be some but that's not what will define the state if Xbox. There will be consistent content announced and released throughout the gen due to Game Pass. Top of the house, Nadella, has already made it known they are committing investment towards a cadence that has them releasing at least 4 AAA games a year. It's about the quality and Microsofts definition of a AAA game. Ambition from their tentpole franchises like Halo and Forza. Seeing ambition with Fable. Seeing quality jumps from Obsidian, Rare and Ninja Theory vs the last games those studios released. Thats what will give you a picture of the future of Xbox.

If Microsoft executes, the narrative will change around 2022 to 2023. There's a lag between what's happening and the general media and public picking up on it.

fans reaction is always different, and must be experienced...

i think Rollins was at gamefest and attended the presser, no?

Oh I'm definitely not affected by YouTubers. They follow the clicks.

I realize that Microsoft has to do better. But I'm excited to see what they're building.

That kind of inconsistency is all over the place though. Was backwards compatibility as big of a deal when Sony was doing and Microsoft wasn't? Was crossplay as big of a deal when Sony was doing it and Microsoft wasn't? Now imagine I was complaining that Sony was getting treated unfairly at the time.

I'm not even saying there aren't examples because of course there are but people are always looking for it no matter what. Every time a exclusive came out you had people saying the reviews are all biased.

People get too attached to their console of choice and it ends up looking very console war-y with this kind of stuff and the Geoff thing is a good example of that. He is worthy of being hated because he half assed got excited about a PS5 game. Somehow it was ok when he was shilling Halo and Doritos though

I was at E3 2018 and FanFest there. It was a ton of fun, and the fans were all enthusiastic, especially in the theater in the back when Phil came in and we got to ask him questions. I still regret not getting a ride in a McLaren though!

Gamers are fickle. People are very happy with Sony. They just released two monster games within a month of each other, had a strong gen, and have already showed their next gen hand. They have the momentum. The leadership at Sony has earned their bias. Microsoft defunding Xbox earned their uphill climb. The exciting thing as someone who prefers the Xbox ecosystem will be riding the turnaround. I expect their best show in over a decade. It won't be their best show for the next generation though. A lot of the next gen development tools that will make the most of the Series X hardware won't even be ready until 2021. Those Series X only games that won't release for 2+ years probably aren't going to be shown Thursday. It will be the cross gen games. Obsidian's new game might be the surprise of the show though. That's why I say go into Thursday's show with high expectations but also realize it's just one view of what's to come.

Neutral. Isn't their game XSX exclusive.
He’s making games on every platform by his own disclosure. He admits that he prefers developing on PS4 over XB1. Seems pretty neutral overall to me.
