So, December is officially here and we are wrapping up a strange year in gaming. Filled with delays, surprise hits, and genre defining releases, 2014 was a roller coaster year for gaming. I personally didn't do as much gaming as I would like to thanks to life but I did play a lot of games. I plan on doing a thorough write up of this post soon but for now, in no particular order:

Bravely Default: a very traditional JRPG, but a great experience nonetheless. Stream lined battles, nice water color visuals, and customizable difficulty make this the best handheld RPG I have played since the original Pokemon games.

Bayonetta 2: an eccentric action game that refuses to let you relax. Simply improves on everything from the original and then some. Funny, provocative, and a combo enthusiasts dream, Bayonetta 2 is an amazing action game.

Mario Kart 8: easily the best Mario Kart game yet for me. Amazing graphics, smooth online play, tight controls and fantastic music. THE game to own on the Wii U.

Super Smash Bros.: a treat to see some of my favorite mascots in HD. Lots of content, much more balanced than Brawl. An essential in any Wii U library and a love letter to the fans. The definitive iteration in this series.

inFamous: Second Son: the first game on PS4 to really wow me. Not the best story, and rather repetitive but great animations and draw distance make this a great action-platformer.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze: not the best 2D platformer but a great one nonetheless. Amazing music, a considerable challenge, and top notch level design helps this sequel outshine it's predecessor.

And there it is. What games did you like this year?

Many of the "big" games I played this year sorta fell flat for me. None were truly terrible but over hype was a big thing this year IMO. With that said, my GoTY is easily Dragon Age: Inquisition. It's hooked me like relatively few single player games do, I'm at roughly 55 hours played and I've still got a ton of stuff to do and I'm enjoying it just as much as I did when I started.

Another game that I think deserves an honourable mention but I don't expect to get much recognition when it comes to awards is Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls. I know it's an expansion but it really did transform Diablo 3 into a great game.

Alien Isolation

Honestly can't believe that ended up being my game of the year, but it's my clear winner. I have a long history of loving horror movies but hating horror video games. Alien ended that and pretty much did everything right IMO. The idea of making the main enemy an unkillable AI that stalks you the entire game is genius, and that premise was perfectly supported by fantastic graphics and sound. Now my dream has become that the developers decide to make a sequel based on the Halloween franchise. Fingers crossed!

Runner up is Sunset Overdrive followed by Far Cry 4.

Dragon Age: Inquisition for me.

Dragon age inquisition and Titanfall for me.

1. AC Unity (hiccups and all I loved it)
2. Sunset Overdrive
3. Bayonetta 2 (near perfect action game)
4. Valiant Hearts
5. Super Smash bros
6. Dragon Age
7. Alien isolation
8. AC Rogue (very pleasant surprise)
9. Mario kart
10. Hyrule warriors
honorable mentions:
Second son, Halo MCC, F Horizons, Last of Us remastered, evil within

I confess of not playing a lot of game this year, even less game that is released this year. But I enjoy valiant heart and now dragon age.

The amount of contents, production value for the money is unbelievable for dragon age.

Developers like konami should be ashamed of themselves to want to charge 40buck ( which they later adjusted to 30) for 90mins of gameplay.

Played a lot of games this year (played, not finished), but the game I enjoyed the most so far is Alien Isolation. With that said though, there are a few games sitting in my apartment that I haven't even had the chance to pop into my X1 yet, and doubt I will get that chance before January.

Forza Horizon 2

The AI is just amazing, not to mention everything else.

Runner up:

Alien Isolation

The only 2014 release left for me is Captain Toad but I can wait on that one. Smash and Mario Kart deserve my time when school ends. I still haven't gotten the MK8 DLC and that's surprising because I need more courses to whip Union like I did all summer ;)

Forza Horizon 2 but if I bought Sunset Overdrive it would probably be that. I enjoyed the demo but won't have time to really play it so I didn't buy it.

You should add me on Wii U if you haven't already. I would be up for Mario Kart and Smash Bros. ToxicVampire is my tag.

Nothing at all has stood out for me. Halo MCC probably would have been for me if the multiplayer worked.

I guess I would say Forza Horizon 2. I wasn't even planning on getting it and it was a total surprise how good it was.

I haven't played a lot of the multiplats so far, but nothing seemed to grab me in the games I like.

Not sure yet. The Evil Within and Dragon Age would be at the top of the list.

Despite some of its issues, Dragon Age Inquisition has been the best game I've played all year and it gets my vote for GOTY.

Despite the forgettable story, Destiny. The gun mechanics and loot system is amazing. Pretty much been playing it on a consistent basis since its launch. I'm almost done platinum-Ing the game and only missing a few exotic guns. And when the DLC comes out, I can't wait to do it all over again.

Followed by Infamous Second Son.

Not sure. Id have to finish something before I could say.

Candidates include

Wolfenstein
GTAV
Alien Isolation
Evil Within
Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare
Mario Kart 8

and a handful of others.

I've put a lot of time into Dark Souls 2. GTA V came out last year, but it could easily still be my GOTY this year. And more recently I've been enjoying Dragon Age.

These are PS4 games, and are in no order of preference. They're my favorite 3 games this year.

  • Shadow of Mordor: Expectations were low being a LOTR game but when the reviews came in, I made the jump. Amazing game, I hope most got it when it was on sale (black friday etc)

  • Diablo III ROS: The game was great on last gen consoles and PC, but the PS4 version is THE best. 1080P perfect frame rate and all the important updates the PC version has. Spent hundreds of hours on this.

  • GTA V (Remastered): I know, yet another re-release but did I ever enjoy this game. I don't laugh out loud playing games very often but this one had me in stitches. I was very sad once I beat the story mode.
