NeoGaf on Life Support, and all Mods quit!

So it's just two forums, one for OTL and another for gaming? How the hell do you find anything lol?

Just to clarify. You don't need to make 200 posts in 120 days. You need to make 200 posts, and at least 120 days need to have passed. That is actually a deterrent to sh*t-posting.

The argument (not one that I'm making, but they would) is that this is part of what made GAF so huge and successful. I can see the logic there. It's a psychological principle that if you make people pass some kind of test to gain admittance or pay a fee, they feel better about being a member -- they value it more -- than if you just let them in willy nilly, without any barriers to entry.

It also contributed to the elitism of GAF, though. Once you're a full member, you look down on the "juniors." I know I do. :p

Fair enough, but they still aren't letting new people in as far as I can tell (only a login button now no sign up). Maybe that's just because of the drama and them getting flooded. We'll see.

I'm totally cool with hazing new people... but they need to let us in first. I know forums that put a number by your name for how many years you've been there, and a 5 will still get talked down to by a 7 :) I'm ok being an "FNG" for months.

Again, it seems like if you "know a guy" you get in. If that changes, great. Feels elitist though.

I agree, but then why do new members need to make 200 posts in 120 days to become a member?

Why say you don't want sh**posts but then force people to do it anyway?

Maybe I've just got an ax to grind, but I've never, ever had to jump through hoops to join an online community except for these two. I mean, we're talking about video games here, right???

It's more of a probationary thing. If it's like the previous forum, any ban during the probationary period is permanent. Also if they are a Member and get a couple bans they could be placed on a probationary period again where another infraction could lead to a permanent ban.

It's not a bad idea but it was absolutely abused by corrupt mods on gaf, but apparently on the new forum all ban/infraction notes will be made public which is a way to discourage that type of abuse.

I can fill out the signup info but this secret code is still required and well, that thread didn't mention anything on getting in. Even using a gmail account doesn't make that secret code requirement disappear.

Re. Open registration at Resetera, from a GAF post:

"There's still some confusion here, so I'll try help out.
  • There is no more invites. Don't ask, don't bother with discord
  • Normal Registration will happen soon. Some saying tonight and some saying tomorrow*
  • Paid Email addresses are required"
*edit: It's tomorrow.

Joining new forums sounds like too much work.

Hell even on actual jobs they only have a 90 day probation period.

All you have to do, though, is just post normally.

Resetera will have some nice improvements over GAF, including features you find at Union: notifications when someone quotes you, and the ability to "mention" a poster so they'll get notified.

We’re the benchmark on how forums should function.

Not bad for a new forum...

''Wow! With your help, we have reached 100,000 posts in less than 34 hours! Open registrations begin tomorrow.''

I'm serious. There aren't any gaming forums that I know that function like ours does and has as robust of a feature set. It's fast, allows people to navigate easily, properly divided forums, looks pretty damn good (will be updating it again in the near future '2.0'), very rarely have any downtime (knock on wood) as we average about 10k sessions per day. I'm proud of what we created here and our community as a whole.

I'm totally with you! You folks do a great job moderating, enforcing common sense without being... well NeoGAF.

I never see other forums using many if any of the cool features here (things like the informative and like things so you can acknowledge a good post without making a needless post).

yeah, this site rocks. It's the best! Now it just needs more themes and wiki! :)

Absolutely.

Just don't follow any strange women into showers, and we'll be okay.

Moral of the story: make sure they're not strange before following them into the shower.

Its no exaggeration to suggest your forum design is unsurpassed and the greatness of UVGF will be revered beyond eternity.

Totally agree with this.

Skimming various other gaming sites that are way bigger, this site has an easy to use UI, and the way the things are laid out is nice. And it looks sharp. I just have my profile set on some kind of standard blue colour and it looks good.... Tactical Light.

Call me crazy, but I never understood why places like 4Chan and Reddit are so popular. The threads look like a mess and you can't really follow it like normal message boards.

Then you have some like Gamefaqs, which has a standard feel to a forum, but looks so bland it looks like it's the same template since 2000.

I can't get registered at either of my email addresses, so I'm going to give up for now. I'll just read.
