They had to of know people were going to rip apart the graphics, braindead enemies and animation. There is no way it's not the main point of everyones conversation when you are launching a new console and you are an exclusive game.

They would have been better off to hold it back and show it in close to release form @ Gamescom.
To me it would have been a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't....

Usually at this point in the development cycle, there's not huge positive changes unless it's delayed. Only game in Xbox history that didn't look good at E3 and turned out great was Halo CE...and there was unique circumstances behind that game since they were porting a MAC game.

I think Crackdown will be fun but think it's being overly optimistic to hope for major changes to graphics, animations or AI at this point.

You must have forgot Gears4Gate. The alpha came out, and the internet blew up and said the game was just a gray slab and no textures and no assets. Microsoft stated it wasn't the final product and they were testing the multiplayer. Then the game came out later that same year, and took a s*** all over the alpha.

Quick reminder:

"Comparing the beta multiplayer to the finished product, Digital Foundry’s John Linneman says the performance and graphics have had a “marvellous upgrade” since the beta."

Though it was actually alpha, not beta.

https://www.vg247.com/2016/07/22/gears-of-war-4-beta-was-at-a-very-early-stage-of-the-project/

“Though called a ‘Beta’, the Gears 4 Beta was at an early pre-Alpha stage of the project – a time where many of the final assets, animations, textures, audio and even gameplay elements are not in the game,” a post on the Gears of War website said.

I actually forgot all about that. IIRC the difference from test game to final was staggering.

I'll keep that in mind, but I'm just going with fingers crossed though.

A bit of a difference between doing a alpha/beta test for balance/mechanics/server stress etc and sending out direct feed gameplay for preview/commentary purposes imo.

I doubt that is what is in question here. The comment was made that graphics, assets and performance can't change enough this close to release, when in fact it happens literally all the time and happened last year with Gears of War 4.

Agreed. CD3 originally had a release date of over a year ago (Summer 2016), so they were given an extra 1.5 years to tweak everything. I don't believe for a second that this will be 'unfinished' in any way when it finally releases, and I'll reserve judgment until we see the final product.

https://www.crackdown.com/2016/06/13/crackdown-3-arriving-in-2017/

At E3 2014, we announced the return of the Crackdown franchise with the unveil of our newest title – Crackdown 3 – and established an exciting and ambitious vision to redefine open-world gaming. Then at gamescom 2015, we showed that creating completely physical and destructible multiplayer environments is possible through the power of Microsoft Cloud and Xbox Live. Today, we are excited to confirm that Crackdown 3 will be available for both Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, and will be an Xbox Play Anywhere title so you can buy one and play across either device.

Crackdown 3 is a game built for the future with a multiplayer experience that will redefine what it feels like to play games, and as we continue to work on this, it has become clear that our original timeline of delivering multiplayer to fans this summer, while maintaining the size, scope and quality of the game, would be challenging. Our top priority is to give gamers an experience they have never seen before at a scale never thought possible, and sticking to our original timeline would have compromised that goal.

We know that many are looking forward to becoming Agents in Crackdown 3 and we are committed to delivering the best experience in 2017. This decision was made with our fans and their gaming experience in mind.

While we won’t be at E3, we cannot wait to show you the future of Crackdown 3 soon.

Usually when you are playing an alpha/beta test(especially alpha), it's from a build of the game that can be many months old. It's not like they just one day decide ok, let's send out a alpha/beta today. Don't forget, every alpha/beta test has a disclaimer that it is not representative of the final product(at least every single one I have been), for that very reason that the build could be many months old.

the second article you posted above even says that it was a pre-alpha build of the game they released for an alpha test that was created early on in the dev cycle of the game. You don't think they were still in the alpha stages in April 2016 do you?

I personally cannot think of any examples of where direct feed gameplay is sent out 4 months prior to launch being vastly different then what is released, except for typical ubisoft downgrades.

But if you read the crackdown article above they already confirmed it was an old build and there are a lot of graphical and performance improvements coming before release. They already confirmed it. That said I love the art style and would love it as it has been shown.

Crackdown 3 will receive a powerful technical upgrade: the builds shown are old
By Emanuele Pietroiaco the July 17, 2017

Crackdown 3 has talked more about the negative than the positive aspects, especially during the presentation to the last E3 2017.

The game, unquestionably entertaining, however, lined up with graphic lovers, and after much development, something more expected from the engineering point of view.

Critics came to the Sumo Digital headquarters, which promptly responded to game detractors: the builds up to now shown relate to a version of the old game, not yet complete and widely reshaped.

With this Sumo Digital it has been said that artificial intelligence was set to the lowest level to make the demo run on the E3 2017 while on the technical side the game already in recent months will receive an important graphic upgrade with more detailed, more effective elements , More complex polygonal models:

"There is also a lot of work to do yet. Surely you will have the chance to play the card of years of development but several improvements have been added in recent months. It's an amazing game to see but we've heard and understand your concerns, "Rukari Austin wrote on Reddit.

"The Crackdown 3 build that we had for the E3 (which was posted online) was designed to simply show various aspects of the game and is subject to change. We will work to share the 4K material shortly, "Austin always twitched.

Edit: I couldn't get the Tweets to copy here.

goddamn. that looks absolutely insane.

If the actual game ends up even resembling that, we need to torch the current threads about this game.

looking forward to the game, but if it's more online focused over single/co-op then I'll not be investing in it at all.
