Just heard that Bend is only a 100 person dev team, no wonder they've been working on this so long lol.

Here is the same video from the official sony youtube page, may be a bit better quality. I'm really looking forward to seeing the whole alternate path video whenever they release it.

It's funny how he's talking about the importance of sound, then drives a loud ass motorcycle through the woods and sneaks up on the ambushers who would have heard it a mile away, lol. Typical game stuff, but funny.

I want this game.

Basically the same thing Daryl does in the Walking Dead.

Yeah, but Daryl is a Boondock Saint, so he has a legit explanation...

Haha, I never got the whole "be quiet not to attract the walkers" thing and then having him revving that damned bike, it goes with the character but not the situation. At least with Days Gone the guy is part of a biker gang and it's been a part of his life for years so that explains why he uses it, plus using a car when the roads are often blocked would make navigating the environment a pain in the ass.

About the story:

"The story is going to be about exploring Deacon as he moves through the world, how he changes, and one of our big themes is hope. Even if you live in the s***, how do you get out of that and how do you make a life worth living?"

"Deacon’s loyalty to those he cares about – his willingness to risk his own life for a friend – illustrates one of the central themes in Days Gone: if surviving isn’t living, what does it mean to truly “live”? What’s worth fighting for? Why do we keep fighting when the world looks so bleak?"

Misc:

"Days Gone will run at dynamic 4K resolution on PlayStation 4 Pro consoles and HDR support has been already confirmed, too. As to its release date, Sony Bend wouldn’t budge, telling Geoff Keighley during E3 2017 that they are currently working very hard on the game and aren’t ready yet to talk about a release date."

So is that the same engine from Horizon: ZD? Looks extremely similar. I really love how they do their atmospherics on such a large level. I do worry a little about how I get the same vibe. Realistic style with the same visuals makes it feel unintentionally samey. Kinda like Unreal does if the dev doesn't add it's own visual flair.

Edit- Interesting, it uses UE4, lol. Weird that I didn't notice that. The foliage, atmospherics, and trees look very much like the Decima stuff. I guess when you go for the same realistic style, it's unavoidable.

Wouldn't that make it the Shadowfall Engine?
That's the one. I haven't played Shadowfall yet, but I bought it on the cheap recently. It apparently has some serious atmospherics as well.

I should have noticed the UE4 implementation on the snow spray kick up on the bike when it slides- very UE4...

Shadowfall has the same "scanning" like HZD does when you press in a button.

It's outside in nature, not sure how much different you can make nature look unless you go for a fictional art style. that being said I don't really think it look much like HZD at all. Horizon seems more colorful to me, this has a bit of a grittier look IMO.

Far cry, red dead(forest areas) ghost recon all have different styles. I can tell the difference immediately. Something about the way days gone and horizon are rendered is very similar despite color differences.

That's kinda the pitfall of realistic styles. It's hard to have a visual Identity. I definitely get a similar vibe, but like I said, there is only so much you can do when you go realistic.

One big differentiation between the two is the wildlife and the look of the characters, the overall look of both games is pretty different IMO but yeah when you go realistic there is only so much you can do with trees and rocks :)

Yeah, the people are better in this one. Certainly the facial animation is substantially better. The skin is better here as well, but much of that has to do with the artists and the SS and Specular settings. I think the people look much more realistic in this one. As far as separating the differences in the Engine (my original post was about how it looks similar from an engine and rendering point of view), I wasn't thinking along the lines of the characters, as those are wholely dependent on the developer where trees and the like can come from existing libraries. Still, you can only get so different with North American foliage.

The difference is the interpretation of realism, the implementation from the specific developer. Gran Turismo was realistic environments, but the art style is far different from Horizon etc. Take a look at realism mods for Crysis, they look better in some cases than these games. So many ways to tackle "realistic" looks.

On Dynamic Events and RPG elements:

"[Dynamic events] sound like they will be a pillar feature of the open world title. Apparently, there’s a dedicated team whose sole purpose is to craft many of them and finding the right places in the world for them."

Senior programmer, Darren Chisum: "We have a dedicated team at Bend Studio that’s making these kind of events and creating ways to place them around the world, depending on where the player is, what level they are, and what they’re doing. It’s not always going to be humans, it’s not always going to be Freakers – it’s sometimes going to be both, or animals might get involved.

"How they interact with each other depends on how the world is looking at the time. The time of day impacts the population of the Freakers out in the world, and the awareness of the Marauders. On top of this – and this can happen at any time in any weather – we’ve also got dynamic events, such as Runners, infected wolves, and Ragers, which are the infected bears."

"Chisum also passingly mentioned a tidbit that’s well worth highlighting. He said that dynamic events will also take into account the player character’s level, thus suggesting that Days Gone will sport an RPG-like leveling and progression system. Bend Studio didn’t really talk about this yet, but with the game not scheduled to release before late 2018 or early 2019, they have plenty of time to do it."

To be fair, making cars (and environments you don't really interact with) look realistic is far easier to achieve than Humans in interactive environments that have to stand up to closer scrutiny. Detail just doesn't have to be as high in a Driving game where the environment flies by at high speeds.

Gran Turismo photo mode you can see everything and pause it, what I mean is that alot of these developers are going for "ultra real" their method to achieve it differently, giving it a unique look.

Still not quite the same thing. They still know the bounds they can work in, and Photomodes often add more detail than when you are racing. GT even has that mode where it blends with photographs, lol, and other than wall collision, there isn't much in the way of interactivity.

People are still vastly more difficult to sell as "real looking".

Ok, just assume GT is a terrible example, that's not what I really trying to convey, I wasn't intentionally putting emphasis on any game.

Was thinking about Days Gone and while i'm pumped for it because i think it will be quality like TLOU i'm also kind of down on it for maybe being too much like it and feeling the same. Just glad it's not cartoony looking with bad animations like State of Decay 2 though.

Lol, that was necessary. I will say- I really want this game, but despite the unfortunately old school animations, I actually think SoD will be a better game with more depth. But hey, the graphics aren't the best, so f*** it! Amiright?

I thought the first SOD really missed the mark and not just with all of the technical issues and lack of polish, it just got boring. It's a great concept but I don't have any confidence in them after the first game to be able to pull this one off.

Other people loved it and thought it brought a breath of fresh air to the genre. To each their own.

Even though I generally agree since I've never been into games that have management aspects involved.

Yoshida apparently said at PSX that Days Gone is coming in 2018. We hadn't been given any sort of release window info previously, so that's news, although I suppose most people were assuming 2018, toward the end of the year.
