Wii U/Nintendo just seems to welcome colors more than games on any other console. The majority of games on X1/PS4 or even 360/PS3 that are big hits have a very bland color palette.
I just know that getting the lighting right in these things is a pain in the ass. Especially if you are going for that colourful effect.
Now DKC: Tropical Freeze is mostly 2D gameplay but still shows some amazing effects that might just be a bit beyond what the 360 or PS3 can do without resorting to software trickery or other short cuts. Games like the new Mario kart really show it, as there the lighting is even more brilliant.
Writing Engines like this is a bit like God in Futurama. The best way of doing it is making it look like you've done nothing at all
. And with the DKC:Tropical Freeze engine, the lighting is just perfect, there are no dark spots unless intended, there are no overly lit spots... unless intended. That is where it shines, and Nintendo did that very often, using techniques others overuse... juuuuust right
. As remember, the Wii U also has 32MB of "Super fast" EDram on there that can be used for some very interesting low latency requiring calculations, be they graphical or physics. And in the case of the WII U, the CPU can access it directly as where it scratch pad ram. And unlike initially assumed that it was of the R700 line of GPU's, it seems actually closer to the Radeon 5000 and 6000 Series in the newer Dev Kits. It really isn't as badly designed as people thing, and like the Xbox One devkits, things are finally showing developers a bit what it can do.
It also really shows in games like DKC:TF, I mean just look at the ruffling hair of Donkey Kong. Normally there would be some errors in there, like in the older fur shaders used on the 360. But this one is pretty much spot on. Everything just looks.. very polished to such an extreme that people underestimate just how much is involved here. Tessellation certainly is used here by just the looks on the trees and details on the surfaces and other objects.
Yet it doesn't distract in the slightest of how just darn fun the game looks. It invites you to play, I myself am having a lot of problems to justify not buying it. It is like a siren's song when I know I do not have the time currently.
PS:"Super Fast" is a reference to what Microsoft called ESRAM in an Interview
. Sorry to go offtopic. I just am easily goated into these things. I miss talking about Technical subjects without things going into a fanboy slug fest.
