EA Access on Xbox One.

Watch this video. This is a Microsoft thing. AND its exclusive! Yikes!

What does that even mean" A MS thing" ? this is an EA program. It is run by EA, it requires Origin account to use. It was offered to Sony and Sony refused it.

Microsoft and EA came up with this deal, but its an exclusive subscription to Xbox One. Sony wasnt offered anything. I read the PR statement. Its crap! They just wanted to seem as if they had the "gamers' in mind or Sony was offered the same deal. No. Sony knows it competes with PS now and decreases its value from the gate. It's an MS thing. Just sayin...

Here's an opinion piece on the topic. Pretty good read.

Sony aren't likely to deprive users of a service that might benefit the ecosystem as a whole, therefore we have to look for the potential for harm.

i. Firstly it obviously competes with and potentially devalues ps+ (you'd have to think EA games would be less likely to become available to plus, or potentially they could be even more outdated versions of the sports titles).

ii. End user support. For the tiny fraction of the fee Sony would receive, they'd be expected to manage the purchase and delivery as with any digital purchase, but the fact that it's not just a single transaction for a single item and rather the support of a yearly or monthly subscription service, opens the door to many more potential issues.
Sony would be the first point of call for end user support when anything went wrong (and with ea/origin on top of ps+, that might not be trivial). Reading the many threads on GAF, I'm sure Sony's CS support lines are busy enough as is regarding the various issues that are thrown up with with their own ps+ without generating more with an extra layer of potential pitfalls on top. There would no doubt be grey areas - problems where Sony think it's an EA issue, EA think it's a Sony issue. Not appetising.

iii. It's not just EA - you have to think further ahead. Other publishers are likely to expect to be able to be given the chance to offer a competing (but maybe not even necessarily that similar) service for their own titles. This would not only multiply the effects of the above concerns but, thinking it through a bit more, you'd have to factor in each publisher's competing service's rules, regulations and nuances... and you are now presenting an even more complex problem for Sony CS.

Taking this further, it's not difficult to imagine the potential for a sea of confusion customer-side when Johnny Gamer expects certain things of one service that is actually only a part of a rival service he also subscribes to. This would only compound with every new service added. All customers would go directly to Sony to air their grievances and have their minds set at ease. Those CS staff are going to spend the next few years in and out of training courses like an mcse.

iii. Having to set up an auto-renewal with a credit card held on file. Sony don't really want to go there, do they? And that Johnny Gamer guy - what if he forgets to cancel and the service auto-renews - Sony CS have to deal with enough "my dog bought COD Ghosts when it scratched its arse on my DS4 help me please!" kind of gripes as it is.

So those were some possible reasons are why I reckon Sony isn't keen to want to walk this path, there are likely many more I can't comprehend not being in a position to understand. It's more understandable why Microsoft, struggling as they appear to be to hang on to the coat tails of ps4, are more open to a roll of the dice with their comfortable bedfellows in this extending of an unprecedented relationship ;-)

The current setup with ps+ is actually the best for the consumer in my view. Sony is the platform holder - they have their store and their services. Keeping that simple and uniform for customers is key. Having ps+ with the potential for any and all publishers competing for exposure through this single subscription service is true competition between rival publishers and it keeps things dead simple for the end user. No nested bulls***.

Several "competing" publisher-exclusive services would appear to me to be be anti-competitive and funnel gamers into a more fractured and uncertain gaming-as-a-service future.

Away from Sony and on a personal level - the TOS on the EA site reads significantly differently to a few random EA spokespersons' comments I've seen quotes in this and the other thread over the past 24 hours (regarding expiration of titles and purchases made using the 10% discount). There's ambiguity there. Tweets and e-mails to gaming sites aren't good enough - the ToS needs to be edited to reassure. It's entirely reasonable to expect EA to stick to the letter of their TOS and not some quote given to gaming Website X or a tweet from some guy who might no longer even work for EA any longer. EA don't really have the gravitas to ensure faith in their future generosity or ability to play fair.

The discount thing is thrown in there as a deal clincher. At 10% it is fairly measly vs the actual retail price paid for physical copies (here in UK at least) and for it to have much benefit as a DLC discount the user would have to be a serious content-hoover, and I can't see that very niche kind of consumer being too thrifty. The time-limited game trials some 120 hours before release I can see appealing to a hardcore minority hell-bent on getting their hands on EA's latest offerings as soon as humanly possible.

Do we really want that though ? several paid subscriptions on top of a live subscription ? MS really should have done a collective one. Had all publishers/devs on board and one singular live sub. I know that is not an easy task and obviously it means a tiered live sub, but that would be better.
Why not? What EA is offering is a great deal and it's a different type of a subscription. What you are saying is do people really want XBL subscription and Netflix subscription on top? Well that's their choice and I say yes. What you are saying about collective one, it doesn't make sense really. What if I only wanted Ubisoft games and not EA and had to pay $10/month? How would EA and ubisoft make sure that they are getting fair share as one of them might contribute more games or better quality games etc.

Several paid OPTIONAL subscriptions to get games for cheap instead of buying from used market and get people more into Digital future. It's really a no brainer that it's a great thing and great idea for everyone. If you don't want to pay for a sub and just want to buy games at full price then no one is stopping you and no one is forcing you to support it.

It's exclusive because Sony don't want it on the PS4 other wise both consoles would have it.

I like uniformity. It makes it easier to deal with subs, it helps with keeping track, and you have one big library to choose from. I did say it would be a big task. Maybe it would not work, but it was simply a question.

This way EA get more profit than if it was shared.

Which doesnt make sense as recent news state that Microsoft and EA created this together. Either way, regardless if it was or never was going to be, its an MS thing now. I'm still hoping for an invite! deez bishes need to hurry up with it too!

You really think MS and EA would just let Sony lie like that?

Anyways did BF4 always take ages to install?

The cool thing about this sub though, is that you get early access to upcoming releases ( a bit more than just a demo) and if you decide to purchase them, you get an additional 10% off if bought through EA access itself. Digital is going to be the way to go this gen. I know there are few here who are already 100% digital, but something like this paves the way for many others. Gamestop and other retailers are a good little ways away for me. Not too bad but if I can just get games like this on a service at home?, why not?

Can anyone answer this for me please?

If I bought the $5 pass, downloaded Fifa and Madden, then chose to cancel my subscription, do I get to keep the games Ive downloaded on my HDD?

Yes, but they will not work unless you have an active pass and the games are active in the vault.

Out of curiosity. How does the subscription work? You pay 5 bucks more to your Live subscriptions, or you create a separate payment to EA.

Would have prefer the formal personally.

Its a pretty r******d take on it all in that it seems to be making excuses for Sony reasoning when it underscores a core incompetency that Sony might have. In the end it basically say that Sony has little to negligible service structure both electronically and live wise, which in reality I can totally believe. MS has a much superior service in place. And all subscriptions you have are listed and can be edited via the X1 settings, which includes XBL, Music, EA Access, etc..

It's separate, as you would pay for Xbox Music, Netflix, etc.. the difference is that like XBL and Xbox Music, it will appear in your subscriptions under X1 settings.

It was a good read. I didn't say I agreed with it. Lol. It's just one guys take on all this... ;) But it's not hard to believe that Microsoft is in a much better position to accomplish something like this though. Pretty crazy really...

Honestly, there is no take to be had. It's a service being offered and people can choose to use it or not. It is all choice. Sony doesn't offer the choice. That is all.

Anything else is scapegoating, bias, dishonesty and/or denial. Discussion on the service is what should be taking place; not why Sony has it or not.

JMHO, but this may be a game changer. Its kind of funny to read people who are actually opposed to the idea though. Like having options is a bad thing. We probably wouldnt see this happen any time soon, but I would love to see Capcom or someone create something like this too. Either way, there has to be a million and one different ways to market this thing and I'm sure EA and MS are on it like stink on chit!

If it is a success then expect the rest to follow in mass.
I too am a little boggled at how this can be seen as a bad thing.

Well, yeah. I was talking more from a user/consumer view though. However, is that a given ? more choice/bigger library potentially means more subs which in turn could = more profit.

I bought a 1 year subscrpition :) Downloaded BF4. Worth every penny !

I have to wonder if the game vault will have to keep certain games or not. For instance, you are now playing the free version BF4. If you can buy add one like season pass etc., then what would happen if BF4 is moved out of the vault? You would no longer be able to play until you have access to BF4 again or buy it. So I have to believe that they might leave some games in indefinitely.

Don't know and at the end of the day, free is free even if only for a month or so.

damn if you dont have BF4 this would be a bargain.

for me i would only really TRY NFL14.. but i think i am just gonna wait till FIFA 15 month to get the game 5 days early then cancel.

If this was for new games I could see it being a great thing. As is all I see being offered is a chance to pay 5 bucks a month to play games 6 months to a year old, and that isn't for me. They'll have to do better. Of course, this is also a vehicle for them to sell you DLC whose sales have slowed. In that regard it is a pretty shrewd move on their behalf.

In fairness, I don't really support EA much or the idea of games as a service. Right now, I would never enter into a contract for a service with them, and will not buy into their ecosystem -- no matter the system that offers it. It would really have to be something spectacular to shake me from that position.
