Elon Musk V. Twitter

Yeah, so this was a bot that banned you, some AI routine that saw some words and banned you. No human ever looked at it.

Saying someone should be punched in the face is not covered by free speech, even if it is made in jest or no actual threat. What if someone did go and punch her? Your intentions are obvious, but some AI routine isn't going to know that.

Honestly, don't say people should be punched in the face. I think you survived 8 hours.
But that is how I felt. And how I feel. Eye for an eye. She should have been given a chance to have a free punch to her face. I figured it was a free speech censor AI bot that banned me for 8 hours because it was as soon as I hit submit.

It shouldn't be called free speech if there is a caveat. Then that isn't free speech. Oh, and if someone did go punch her, that would be awesome!

Well, is it free speech? Or is it free speech*

*you can say what we allow you to say
What we allow you to say and that is what it will be in the future too.

Common sense says you shouldn't be banned but the rules under Musk will be based on agendas not common sense just like now.

But there would be caveats to free speech no matter what because I imagine they wouldn't let people call people racial slurs which we probably agree they shouldn't

I got an 8 hour ban for what I posted on Twitter. I was responding to an article where a woman punched another woman who was coaching a kids game, because the woman didn't like the coaches telling her to stop screaming in the stands. She was arrested. I commented on the article saying her punishment should be that she get punched in the face from the coach. The 8 hour account ban was instant, so I assume it was flagged by violence by the word punch the woman in the face.

That isn't free speech IMO.
You freely said it right? Are you saying there should be free from repercussions as well? Not saying I would ban you, but you did freely say it.

No doubt, but it isn't covered under free speech because it is technically a threat of violence or inciting others.

You can call her a c***. You can make fun of the way she looks or talks, or just about anything else. You can't threaten people though, even indirectly.

Anyway, free speech covers what the government can and can not do. The government didn't crack down on you, a private company did.

You have no right to free speech regarding any 3rd party platform. If you pay to host any platform, you can boot anyone for any reason. You could boot people because their avatars weren't hot chicks.

Well, freedom of speech really is government related. So Twitter doesn't need to offer free speech. And I don't think it's truly free speech if I offer an opinion saying eye for eye and I get banned for 8 hours.

But government definition:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

It’s the very beginning of the bill of rights…

Correct. So going back to what you said:

Twitter already has free speech.

But do they?

Within limits, yes. People think rights have no limits. The US has the 2nd amendment, but that doesn't make every single weapon legal. Rights have reasonable limits. Don't threaten people on Twitter and you'll be fine. Even an 8 hour timeout is not really an infringement on your free speech by any real measure.

You can tweet out and disagree with each and every thing our current president says. That's free speech. You can't threaten people though, even indirectly. It would be great if we lived in a world where each and everyone knows that your opinion is harmless, but we don't.

I'll delete my account as soon as it goes through. I like Twitter but I won't be part of the right's twisted view of free speech. Twitter already has free speech. Sorry if people think inciting an armed rebellion against this country which results in multiple deaths should be covered under "free speech".

I plan to as well. Looks like there are people already moving to Mastadon, it appears to be getting slammed right now. I hope they can scale up without too much pain.

I am onboard with that. Especially when you add "within limits". 💪

I just googled that. Never heard of it. I doubt they will put a dent in Twitter though.

Shut it all down, it's ruining society anyway. Facebook, twitter, instagram they are spreading lies, making people feel even more self important than they already did, IG especially is making young people even more shallow while still feeling like they have accomplished something based on people liking a doctored up photo etc. It's all a mess, we were better off before these things existed IMO.

Don't disagree, but people need to take a god damn break from social media. Reddit, forums, etc included. Get outside, go for a hike, go running, whatever. Just take a break and people will stop being big mad online. It's so not worth any energy lol.

Social media doesn't ruin society, it shines a light on the real society. It shows how people really are and really think when not staring you right in the face.

Social media feeds people exactly what they want. If people are chill and looking for light stuff, that's what they get. My Facebook feed is boring as anything.

Yea I don't think there would have been as much and fast as a backlash against russia invading Ukraine if it wasn't for the whole world watching it in collective horror in real-time. Overall i think social media is net positive. However, humans need to get better at discerning truth from fiction and recognizing bad actors. I think it will happen but there will be a lot of pain along the way.

I find that social media encourages negativity. I would rather not know how people are. People say things on social media that they wouldn't say in real life. Take Val for instance. He is a big ol' massive poop on the forum. But in real life, I bet he would respect everyone here better if they were face to face with him and just being normal. He would not say the things he says here.

I am the same way here. I talk about all these hot chicks all the time, because I am masked behind a keyboard. In reality, I don't talk like that as much as I do here. And in reality, I probably couldn't even bang Punky Brewster.

400 million active users = nobody there? Um, ok.
