Mod edit: Use this thread to discuss features and "vs." talk regarding features. I moved it out of the sales thread, so it won't keep derailing the discussion.

Nice gimmick, too bad most gamers don't care. They don't care so much, that MS had to go back on their word and offer a Kinectless version at a lowered price.
________

I didn't say no one liked it. However, fact is, one of the biggest complaints was the high cost due to forcing Kinect on everyone.
XB1 sales today would be dismal if MS had not removed Kinect. Truth is, most gamers are going to be....well....gaming.

What does kinect have to do with snapping? Kinect was never needing for snapping apps.

FYI, most people at this point are more than likely at least snapping the friends app due to previous updates that caused that app to be snaped by default + the (iirc) August update that added "snap center" making it easier to snap apps without kinect.

You called snapping a "gimmick" and something that "most gamers don't care about" when yet it's more than likely how every XB1 owner uses their system at this point; Snapping is pretty much the next gen version of the Xbox 360 miniguide but with far more options and connections to other apps while you are inside a game.

Well whether you love it or not you kind of have to. Its too slow otherwise.

I was actually referring to Kinect and using voice commands to perform actions.

As for snapping, it's still a gimmick. Sure, it's a neat gimmick, but still a gimmick nevertheless. That gimmick doesn't make the whole console as a package better or worse than it's competition. Point being, all these "things" like games, snapping, kinect, etc, making a system "better" is just opinion.

Snapping isnt a gimmick. Its actually very useful and comes in handy. I literally use it in some form, everyday.

And, games, snapping and kinect doesnt make a system better? In what world?

Feature, not a gimmick. If that's a gimmick then so is the screen shot mode of the PS4 or "Xbox, record that." They're not gimmicks. They're features. Dressing up your Xbox Live avatar is a gimmick.

Screen shot mode and xbox record that are indeed gimmicks. The feature can be a gimmick. It is not required to play the game.

From wiki:
  1. In marketing language, a gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries.

For the record, I'm not saying that it's not a cool feature, just saying...whether or not it makes one platform better than the other is purely based on opinion. You can mince words, and let's go ahead and call it a "feature", but again, it's not a feature that everyone cares about.

Again, before anyone jumps down my throat, which is par for the course in this site...I'm saying it's a bad feature, nor am I bashing the console for having that feature.

See above post for why it is indeed a gimmick.

And whether or not it makes a system "better", that's subjective. Saying Kinect makes it better is like saying PC is better because it can use mouse and keyboard AND controller. Fact is, that would make PC better only to the gamer that cares about using a mouse and keyboard.

I'm not bashing you. It's not a gimmick. Your definition of a gimmick states that screenshot mode and record that are not gimmicks since both systems feature it in some capacity. They're features. Dress me up avatars are gimmicks.

Explain to me how a "feature" can't be a gimmick? I even posted a definition from wiki.

Here's another:
to equip or embellish with unnecessary features

Snapping, screenshot mode, record that, etc....are not necessary to gaming. These consoles are first and foremost, gaming machines. A person can go the entire duration of the consoles generational lifetime, and never use these features.[/quote]

These are more than gaming machines. You also truncated the definition in this post. Gimmick is almost always used in a negative light.

Online gaming a gimmick? Game installs a gimmick? Replaceable hard drive? USB drive access a gimmick?

Ok, we can sit here and mince words all day. If you don't want to call them gimmicks, fine....let's call them features. My point still stands and remains true. These "features" do not make any one platform "better" than another as fact, but merely by opinion. It falls into the "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" saying.

Saying XB1 is better because it has snapping is like me saying PS4 is better because of that finger pad the controller has (whatever it's called). Neither one makes the console better than the other as a fact. I'm not saying this in defense or opposition to any console or pc.

I agree with that but also understand some features are more important to others than they are for me. Remote play on PS4 means nothing to me but may mean the world to someone who craves that feature.

In the grand scheme of things one console being better than another is wholly individual unless one system is a complete disaster i.e. 3DO.

There are billions and billions of video playthroughs recorded and uploaded onto YouTube and screenshots taken of console games even long before the current generation of consoles. There is no way that can be described as a gimmick.

For starters, it's nowhere near "billions". And for every gamer taking images and uploading them on the web, there are more that do not do that.

Point being, and still remains true....these are features that not everyone cares about. You're trying to prove some false equivalency here, which I don't get. I never said that there no one cared about these features. Me saying "not everyone" doesn't = "no one".

For example. Evaluate this claim.
PC for gaming is better because it has mouse and keyboard. Got that everyone? It is better. Why? Because millions of gamers love playing with mouse and keyboard. nuff said.

How do you know not everyone uses the DVR feature? Do you have some statistical evidence we don't? PC games have always had billions of screenshots taken over the entirety of PC's existence by PC gamers. So how is it a novelty now that it is a very explicit feature provided on consoles?

Wii sold a bazillion consoles, and motion control was described as a gimmick. People call any feature they don't like a gimmick. "It's just a gimmick."

Sharing pics isn't a gimmick it's a feature, you don't need it for any games to play them and games aren't designed around it. It's something I think is a lot of fun but I wouldn't assume everyone does.

RE-read what I said.....because it still stands true.

Here, I'll even quote it for you.

Point being, and still remains true....these are features that not everyone cares about.

Considering that there are almost twice as many PS4 console, not including PC gamers, Nintendo gamers, etc.....that tells us all that these are features that not everyone cares about.

Not everyone cares enough about those features to warrant purchasing the Xbox One.

They don't care, they don't care enough, whatever....that's just mincing nuances of a statement.

That's like saying, do I not care about ants in my backyard...or do I not care enough to not go out there and start killing them.

lol, not really. It's more like video features in a DSLR.

Anyway, I think you get my point. Having certain features over your competitor doesn't make the product "better", other than to the consumer that sees value in said feature.

As for snapping, it's still a gimmick.

If you consider snapping a gimmick, do you consider the Xbox 360 mini guide a gimmick? And do you consider the XMB on the PS3 and the guide button on the PS4 a gimmick?

February NPD is coming out next week I beleive.

I would imagine about 13 million.

The thing is they've already lost ground in both markets.

From what I have seen, they have gained ground in both markets. They are selling better than the 360 did in those markets, and they are also still selling a ton of Xbox 360's in both those markets. They truly are continuing to saturate those markets with Xboxes.

Like I've said several times before, we're just mincing words. We could use features, and that still doesn't take away from my point in the least way.

No, it's all good. I was just wondering if you considered those gimmicks is all. Doesn't matter to me if you think they are or not, just was curious.

It really doesn't matter what I consider these features to be, as this is just what I perceive them to be on a personal level. To me, anything that is not "needed" to be able to play the game, is an unnecessary feature. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that as a negative, nor that I don't care for these features, as I love many of these features....but if they're not "needed", then I just see them as unnecessary features designed to make the product more appealing.

Now, let me reiterate what I said, because often people twist words....just because I say the feature is not necessary, doesn't mean I think it's useless or not good.

To me gImmicks are things that dont work.

The definition of a trick or device intended to attract publicity or business doesn't apply to most of the features being discussed here.
