Curious what you guys think of their new microtransaction strategy. I'll have to think about it some more but I think I love it.

In a nutshell...

You buy a season 2 "battle chest pass" for $9.00 dollars.

Season 2 lasts for roughly two months.

In those two months, you level up your profile starting from 0 up to 100. You earn xp each match depending on the usual variables.

The battle chest doles out a reward every few levels (skins, dances, emotes, and emojiis).

If you bought the battle chest, you get a reward about every other level (65 rewards in total). If you didn't pay anything, you get a reward every 10 to 15 levels and they're not as cool.

I don't know if I'm experiencing stockholm syndrome but it feels like they're giving out a ton of value while also giving incentive to pluck out more cash for the season 3 battle chest pass.

Have you guys seen this yet? Thoughts?

BTW, the new skins are much improved over the base skins that we've seen thus far. So much personality now.

As long as the micro-trans are limited to fluff, I'm all for it!

I will totally be jealous when I see other people using new dance moves though.

I've noticed when I play the 50v50 matches that everyone tends to try to land in the Shop area, but I like the Lonely woods.

I built a maze last night while everyone was off killing and stuff, only to find out that your walls disappear once you building a certain amount.

I love the Yuletide theme. Makes me want to bedazzle a dildo with pinecones to have myself an extra merry Xmas.

The battle bus looks rad too.

I want to rename my character TaylowSwift, then play 50v50 so I can lead Taylor Swift's squad.

Oh my god!!! There's a costume called the "sparkle specialist" that looks like a space version of Jem from Jem and the holograms!!!!

I played for a bit tonight. It's not bad, but compared to PUBG I'd say the following:

Pros
- More variety in game types
- Far better performance regarding frame rate in particular; it's as steady as most single player games
- Graphics are much cleaner due to the art style
- Added variety in that you can break down buildings and build your own structures/traps, though some may feel differently about this
- Quicker turnaround from the end of one game to the start of another, though neither is bad at this

Cons
- Although you can build things, you can't interact with the environment as much (no climbing for instance)
- You can't go prone, which takes away some of the tension in the game (IMO)
- Less detailed graphics, despite the cleaner style
- No vehicles that I've seen, which takes away from the variety

Just Different
- Map is quite a bit smaller, which leads to more immediate clashes between players. You might see the player count go from 100 to 70 in the first 3 minutes.
- You can actually outrun the "wall" if it is closing in. A full sprint will allow you to make space.

Overall I think I prefer PUBG, but for a free game Fortnite is excellent. The performance is outstanding.

Agreed on the performance issues. I've been playing both on PC, and Fortnight is faboosh!

Also, I think the wall speeds up as the round progresses it. You can only outrun it on the first few shrinks.

So, as you know in these games the large circle takes a certain amount of time to constrict around the smaller circle. When the timer reaches zero, all parts of the large circle hit all parts of the smaller circle at the exact same time.

In the picture above, if you're in the northwest (top left) part of the large circle, the storm is going to move extremely fast towards the smaller circle. However, if you're in that little real estate in the southeast part of the large circle, the storm is going to move significantly slower because there's so much less distance for the circle to travel.

Man, I wish I was smarter because I do not know how to explain that any better. Hope that helps!

Yeah, but you can out run the shrinking wall on the first two shrinks.

By the third one it's the same speed as your sprinting, and after that, you can't outrun it, once the time hits 0.

It feels like you can but you can not. If you start in Flush Factory (greatest drop zone ever!) and the first circle is at the northeast most part of the map, you can't outrun the storm provided it's an even race (you both start moving at the same spot).

With that being said, the first two storms only do 1 damage per second so you're not in too much danger being in it at that point.

It really depends on where the circle is located within the larger circle, not the number of circle in particular.

They just released the Boogie Bomb into the game. It's basically a funny version of a flash grenade as it forces people caught in its blast radius to dance for 10 seconds...

Uh oh, they straight stole that s*** from Ratchet and Clank!!!! ;)

Massive info dump courtesy of a 30 minute interview from Donald Mustard, Worldwide Creative Director of Epic Games. (More studios should be this open)

It's a long watch so I'll just post the tid bits that grabbed my interest. I'll divide them up into near term and long term goals. Donald was not guaranteeing any of them but I interpretted it as developer safe speak.

NEAR TERM

* New City coming in the next 2 to 4 weeks.
* Adding gameplay modifiers throughout the map starting with the addition of the city. This could be big.
* Treasure Chest item is hitting soon. Was supposed to hit last week. You can either set and open the chest or set it for bait.
* Speed potion coming next 2 to 3 months.
*Melee weapons/Energy sword coming soon.

LONG TERM

* Vehicles might actually happen, which surprised me. The idea they're tinkering with is a bulldozer with armor plating. It moves slow but you can level buildings with it.
* They're adding a class based limited time mode eventually.
* Adding a rail gun you have to charge in order to shoot. Powerful.
* They think they can get it to 60 frames per second. This one puzzled me because many people on PC already play well above 60 and consoles are nearly locked at 30.
* Aim down sights is being prototyped for all weapons right now. Labor intensive process.

Those are the big things but there's plenty more in that interview if you're interested.

What would be really awesome is if they could invent their own game!

Heck no! The genre is richer and more competitive because there's so many of these games starting to pop up. Don't let anyone get complacent. Competition breeds innovation.

Besides, the longer Fortnite Battle Royale is out, the more it differentiates itself from peers.

Its not really original but neither is PUBG. Welcome to the world of video games.
I think the fort building actually ads a lot to it. No terrain is inaccessible with the right resources, and you can win the game by starting a squad fort early.

The destruction really adds to it too. You can spot people across the map by noticing them chopping down trees/buildings, and plan accordingly.

One of my fav places on the map, is a tunnel under a mountain with a massive supply of bricks. You can destroy the top ladders and booby trap the entrance, then have a 6 story drop, then brick up everything around you so others have to waste their ammo to even have a chance of getting near you.

Also, shooting down other people's wooden bridges as they're trying to race accross the map, only for them to fall to their death is immensely satisfying.

I meant the comment as a joke, but when you say ‘Heck no’, do you really think developers shouldn’t try to invent some different or original? (I’m talking in general terms here and not specifically this game). Cos that’s just sad if you belive that.

Battle Royale is a nascent genre and only benefits from having more developers take a crack at it at this stage in the game. Once the genre becomes flooded and we start seeing it's limits, then we can start bemoaning new entrants.

We're not even close to that point though. I for one can't wait until we see Blizzard, Nintendo, EA and all the other big guys throw their hat into the ring.

That’s not my question.

I asked -

You said.

Heck no.

I have an update for the dozens (dozens!!) of Fortnite Battle Royale fans here.

They just released an AoE healing item that I'm personally super disappointed by (should have had a 90 second duration and healed for 1hp per second), and it looks like next week they're going to refresh the map with some new locations.

Just a reminder, the patch just went live a few hours ago. The game sometimes runs wonky on the day of a new patch. You have been warned!

This thread being dead while PUBG thread explodes is so Union

If a complete stranger comes up to me and says "I just bought an XBox One S. What game should I check out?" I unequivocally recommend Fortnite over PUBG. If they have an Xbox One X, I say "Probably Fortnite but you might like PUBG." If they just got a PC, I say "Definitely PUBG but you should check out Fortnite too."

I do think there's such a deep console warrior mentality here that people, maybe even subconsciously, support a mini XBox exclusive over a multiplatform game. Especially in such a down year. It's certainly a strange thing to see.

All that being said, Fortnite is going to have a massive year in 2018, so I suspect a few more here are going to give it another shake at some point.

Given that Fortnite is more popular on Xbox than PUBG I think that is 100% the percent the reason.

I’ve enjoyed PUBG so much since it came out I keep thinking I’ll download this and try it again. I know I won’t play it much (don’t like the goofy graphics or building) but it might be fun to have a game or two now and then.
