God of War

I don't know. I thought God of War 3 was amazing until i played God of War. He should probably play 3 first if he doesn't want to ruin it. Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, and God of War have basically ruined gaming for me from here on out.

I know.. i hate when people say a masterpiece ruins future games for them. Well.. it kinda does. These games are so f***ing good you don't want to go back to mediocrity. You just don't. I seriously can't look at other games the same again.

I think GOW 3 was highly overrated, the first 45 minutes were awesome but after that it was all downhill IMO. This game is so much better in every way and I don't just mean the technical stuff like graphics and sound but also the story, the writing, the voice acting. You can just tell that this game had better a better director than GoW3 did.

I can honestly say this is one of the best games I have ever played. There is no other (this type) of game even close.

If I bought the PS4 just for this game alone it would have been worth it.

Yeah this game is one of my top games of all time too and I go all the way back to the Atari 2600 lol. I saw someone on twitter post that it's sort of this generations Zelda 64 and I'd have to agree. Obviously it's a more mature game but it's just special in a way that not many other games are. What kills me is we are going to likely have to wait another 3-5 years for the next one.

Yeah and I will buy a PS5 day one waiting for it.

Me too! lol Maybe we'll get lucky and the PS5 will come out next year and feature backwards compatibility with some of the bigger PS4 games getting some 4K upgrades to entice people to switch over. Maybe native 4K and 60fps :)

Despite the hype this game still impresses me. The combat came naturally. The character designs and animations, are almost all top notch. The only nitpick is kratos walking animation, i cant stand how unnatural it looks. Other than that it's better than expected, and I expected a lot.

GOW3 flow was god damn awful. A big boss fight then boring running around a level. It just feels like a rushed game. It's like there is a boss ok here is a level ok boss again then level again. I mean I liked it but GOW2 had a great flow. it did not feel like ok here is a boss so let's load a level afterward. it had a feeling of moving from area to area.

I'm enjoying the game much better than I thought I would. Boy isn't as annoying as he originally seemed when i heard him in gameplay videos. I'm having trouble using the top buttons for everything during combat. I'm just leaving the first area and I'm really impressed with the visuals and the fight outside his home was really cool.

yeah I still suck at the controls. my ass can only pull off basic s***. I also have small fingers so hitting them top triggers is hard for me.

I've yet to finish it but I kind of think maybe they should not make more. the two best GOW games are the new one and 2 and the same director for both made the best games. So he is doing something others did not do or can't. not sure I want to see a new GOW unless he is the director again.

I 100% agree he is the best director for the series, if you watch some of the spoiler casts that he's done with people like Kinda funny he says that they've set things up in this game for future games so there are more coming. I do think that even if he's not the director he'll still have a lot of input because he's going to stay at Sony Santa Monica. It will be hard to top this one though so I will do my best to keep my expectations in check whenever a new one does come out.

It will start to come to you after you get your butt handed to you enough times. I'm by no means an expert with these controls but was forced to get better after getting stuck trying to close one of those realm tears that spit out a bunch of difficult enemies. I was trying to complete that fight for about 15 minutes. It took me that long to realize I wasn't using the block button. Up until that point I had got away without using it but that battle forced me to use it and I destroyed them since the parry/counter is so damn strong.

I love when you are able to parry and then send them flying with that shield punch.

I was worried about the main control scheme before playing it, honestly it felt great after just a little while but everyone is different. As far as the son he is actually a great asset during gameplay especially after you get to upgrade him a bit and he's also helpful during exploration because he'll point things out to you. They really did an awesome job making him part of the game and not just a side character who either gets in the way or just gets on my nerves lol. I was also a bit worried about how I'd feel about him before the game came out but I really like the character a lot and I'm glad that the director got his way and was able to keep him in the game.

I'm glad you are getting to play it after, did you download the updates or are you just playing it without any patches?

Many reputable sites were claiming the game had a 7.4gb update on day 1, and I downloaded the 1.13 update which was only 1.2gb. I guess it was fake news or something. I haven't played long enough to look into the upgrading system yet to see what's possible. I don't even hear the kid yelling most of the time for him to annoy me like I was expecting. Not sure if that's because of my ancient HT system or having the rear speakers 20' away.

I usually change control schemes in games that use the triggers/ bumpers as primary buttons in games if I can, not sure if this one has that option or not. It doesn't help that I've pulled ligaments and fractured fingers in my right hand within the last year. :meh:

So far the game is better than i thought...

I get a mix of:

Demons/Dark Souls
Castlevania LOS
Uncharted
Zelda
EDIT: Nioh

Not seeing TLOU like some say.

Yeah other than it being a man and a child on screen there really is no legitimate comparison to TLOU to be made IMO

Yeah you can change the controls, I haven't done it but I know the option is there.

I haven’t gotten very far yet. But so far it feels like a boss battle game, one area after the next. Does the game open up more as you play? Any exploration, more puzzles?

It did seem like that at the start but it’s not like that as it continues. There is loads of exploration to do.

The only issue I have with the controls is I wish blocking worked like in RYSE- where it will interrupt what you are doing and had, like, a one frame accuracy. This game has a weighty animation dependent system for the most part. I've had a few instances of the game not acting as fast as I wanted.

Other than that, the game is tops! I do wish I had a Pro though... 1080p ain't cutting it anymore, lol...

You get a green, yellow or red flash just before a hit to let you know if you can parry, block or dodge. It’s not far off from Ryse it’s just implemented much more smoothly.

I know that, I was talking responsiveness of the block. I'm sure it's timed intentionally; I just always liked that in Ryse.

I saw that tonight. Now I've played the game for too long, and it's too annoying to learn different controls.

I’m about 6 hours in and the game is starting to really click with me. The environments, artistically, are jaw dropping. Animations are excellent. Characters and story are decent but early on it’s not on par with the best story games yet. Not bad...but I’m not curious about what happens next like I was in Last of Us.

I didn’t love the combat initially because I wanted things to work like they do in Soulsbourne but now it’s grown on me and I’ve become addicted. Wish I could use the Elite controller paddles because that would really help but my damned converter stopped working after Sony’s last update.

Really like the level design. I’m burned out on open world games. God of War is fake open world...and I say that in a good way. I’d love for more developers to copy this. There’s just enough exploration and openness so that it doesn’t feel like it’s on rails yet you’ll never be wondering aimlessly wasting time. It’s Metroidvania-lite. Backtracking never feels tedious yet it’s satisfying to open up new paths in old areas.

Puzzles are only average. Maybe the weakest part of the game.

Game is worth a purchase for the water cooler moments and seeing the best of technical and artistic visuals come together.

6 hours in it feels like a 9.5 game. Very good combat. Very good level design. Amazing visuals. Artistically some of these environments set a new bar. Good voice acting. Only average puzzles so far. If the story picks up, game may score higher. Has potential to be one of greatest games of all time.

Just my first
Dragon!! Saved one already too

Anyone afraid of loss of epic battles can rest easy. That camera work...

I know, this is a Sony first party game but shessh enough with the patches already. There was another one last night. The game has been out since last Friday and we've had something like 7-8 patches. And most of the patches are really small and not for major issues from what I can tell so they should be held and rolled into a download with other patches instead of having to download a patch almost every day. My sympathies go out to those with internet data caps.

Game is awesome and I'm in no way insinuating anything about the quality of this game. Its just that I'd like to be able to fire up the game and play it and not have to wait for a patch/install on weeknights when my playtime is limited.

I love that there is so much meat to the game, yet it's all very palatable.. I'm like 4 out of 5 days in a row playing this game and it's still feeling good the further I get.

Gotta complain though, 'Resolution Mode'... Performance doesn't hold up at all during a good amount of the game and it gets really sloppy and chugs hard (real spoiler incoming)
when you use/acquire Blades of Chaos
. The slight amount of clarity it provides is not worth the trade off, considering nothing else about the presentation gets bumped and its not consistent...

Stick with Performance Mode.. it's a little quirky in some scenes, (some stock animations look like they're moving at 2x speed), but outside of that it looks like a different game, plays much better and all of those glorious pixels look like they know what they're doing now. This should be the default mode.

Just start without updating
