Game of the Year?

Sunset overdrive is an amazing game, i am having so much fun with it, dragon age i think is still a better game but i am so glad i have a x1 so i can play both of them.

Without a doubt THE most unappreciated game of the year. It's fun as Hell, dare I say even more fun than Mordor. Its a shame its visual style and humor turned most people off. Years from now you'll see some people talk of Sunset Overdrive like some do Shenmue today...

I didn't pick Forza Horizon 2 just because it's an Xbox game. I picked it because it was the only game on the list given that was my game of the year. I haven't played all those games, so there is no way I could have picked some of them. At the time Andy posted the list:

  1. Destiny - PLAYED LOVED
    5 vote(s)
    6.8%

  2. Bayonetta 2 - NEVER PLAYED
    3 vote(s)
    4.1%

  3. Dragon Age: Inquisition - NEVER PLAYED
    18 vote(s)
    24.3%

  4. Alien: Isolation - NEVER PLAYED
    8 vote(s)
    10.8%

  5. Far Cry 4 - JUST STARTED THE INTRO
    3 vote(s)
    4.1%
  6. *
Forza Horizon 2 - PLAYED AND LOVED
    16 vote(s)
    21.6%

  7. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor - NEVER PLAYED
    6 vote(s)
    8.1%

  8. Sunset Overdrive - NEVER PLAYED
    4 vote(s)
    5.4%

  9. Titanfall - PLAYED AND LOVED
    6 vote(s)
    8.1%

  10. Wolfenstein: The New Order - NEVER PLAYED
    5 vote(s)
    6.8%

So I had to choose between Destiny, Titanfall and Forza Horizon 2 on that list. I found FH2 to be the better of the three by a landslide. Since then, I have played more of FarCry 4 and I have bought and just started Sunset Overdrive. I still am giving the nod at this time to FH2.

Even of the games that are NOT on the list that are on PS4 and multiplatform, FH2 still takes my top spot.

Obvious bias is obvious.

Yeah, I think that's probably true of most people. We've only played a couple of the games on the list, and we're just choosing amongst them. In my case, DA:I was the only game on the list I played, so it was kind of a given that I'd vote for it.

p.s. Poll closes this evening. I moved it up a bit, because I'm leaving town tomorrow morning, and I want to wrap this up tonight.

I've played five of the games on the list and have a sixth bought but haven't had a chance to play it yet. Of the five games I've played I enjoyed them all but Destiny was the only one that I enjoyed but felt it didn't live up to what was promised but still felt it was a good game. I played Destiny, Dragon Age, Mordor, Wolfenstein and am more than halfway through Far Cry. Aliens I bought for their 50% off Christmas sale but probably won't get to it until another week or two. All I know is there has been so many great games this year that it was really hard choosing my game of the year. Dark Souls 2 would have been in my top games list too but that wasn't a current gen game or option for this poll.

I own Titanfall and Sunset Overdrive (played very little of both so far)...only played the demo of Forza Horizons 2 but based on the limited amount of time I've had with each I gave the nod to FH2.

Everyone knows you picked FH2 because you're an Xbox fan. The game was awful but it came in a green box. Just admit it man. Microsoft should re-brand the X1 as the Xdumpster. There's nothing but rubbish on that console.

Ok, poll is closed. Forza wins for Union GOTY. DA:I and Forza kept trading off for the lead, but Forza pulled ahead at the last minute. Here is the final ranking:

1. Forza Horizon 2 (18 )
2. Dragon Age: Inquisition (17)
3. Alien: Isolation (8 )
4 and 5. Mordor and Titanfall (tie, 6)
6 and 7. Destiny and Wolfenstein (tie, 5)
8 and 9. Bayonetta and Sunset Overdrive (tie, 4)
10. Far Cry 4 (3)

My opinion of Far Cry 4 is forever tainted. I was really sick for the last 8 hours or so I played the game, right up until I finished it. So I have those bits of the game that became repetitious associated with the coughing, runny nose, and inability to keep my eyes open for more than ten seconds at a time. Also, f*ck those acid-trip missions. They were terrible.

Top 5 are all pretty awesome games.

Having finally got Horizon 2 and put some time into it I can see why folks voted for it. It is pretty, and a highly polished game. It has a fantastic physics engine perfectly tweaked for a arcade/sim combination. It is packed with content. It has a solid online set up. Most importantly, it is just bags and bags of fun.

Maybe we could have some sort of annual recognition for Union GOTY? Some place here on the forum, showing the GOTY 2014, with cover box, game details, link to this poll. Then do the same for 2015, and on. That way we can look back.

I also vote for polls to be public, showing who voted for what game.

Giantbomb didn't even have Forza Horizon 2 in their top 10. Man you people will vote for mediocrity as long as it's XBox exclusive.

Forza Horizon 2, we'll deserved and my vote...and I own a PS4 too, sorry to put a crinkle in these ignorant theories of fanboyism. Nothing mediocre about this title whatsoever, best racer I've played since PGR2 and I've played almost all between.

From what little I've played of it, I found the actual world to be boring as fu$%. It was visually repetitive with nothing really interesting going on. A boring world with little incentive to actually do anything in it. Two issues that really killed the game for me.

Your clearly devastated that people love a game that you don't, why don't you suck it up and get on with it instead of attacking peoples opinion any chance you can get, and it isn't tied to this thread either. I just think you don't like any Xbone exclusives?

Forza 5 and Titanfall are the best next gen (current gen) console exclusives IMO. I may not like where the XBox brand is headed (neither should you) but it had the better first year as far as console exclusives go.

What don't you like about where it is headed? The initial reveal and the first 6 months definitely could of been handled better and should have been as powerful as PS4 but i reckon Phil has got them on the right track and focusing on games which is what is winning for the PS4.

1) MS wasn't built to compete from a position of weakness. Their first/second party was decimated in 2013 when Bungie left, Epic decided to leave the Gears of War franchise, and MS closed a smattering of in house development studios. MS then decided to invest into a variety of new studios. If you do the research on these new studios, you'll see they aren't built to produce anything meaningful for quite some time. I know that sounds fanboyish, but there is truth there. MS was going to succeed by leading in install base and securing 3rd party exclusives. When you neuter a companies 1st and 2nd party studios and approach 3rd parties from a position of weakness, it's not a good sign.

2) I can't stand the XBox's demographic. MS is targeting the 13 - 16 year old age range. Sony is targeting a more mature demographic, of which I am a part of.

3) Lastly, I'm not particularly thrilled with MS's approach to this industry. Xbox management has been in upheaval for the past two years. They don't treat independent developers exceptionally well. They don't support a creative games culture in general. I don't like the reputation MS has built in dealing with their content creators. I know Sony is just as slimy as MS (as all mega corporations are) but Sony just seems to have more of a gaming culture further back in their roots than MS.

Don't get me wrong, there's also a lot to like about the Xbox brand but I just can't get past the above like so many of you here can.

That is some of the funniest BS I've read this year.

Oh and of course...

Baseless speculation presented as fact. It isn't so.

Of course it's not fact. I'm surprised you interpreted it as such. It's just how I see things. I would be interested to hear what you think Microsoft's and Sony's target demographic is though with their respective consoles.

Hmmm, including yourself in that mature demographic just shot the s*** out of any merit it may have had.

Back on topic; Can I change my vote? I want to pick Horizon 2 now, this game is just awesome. Have not had this much fun in an arcade racer since Motorstorm 2.
