My next complaint actually needs it's own post.
Melee Combat- Overall just poor
And I can tell you how to make it better very easily
1. He already has a chain, so let's see how we can improve on that.
First, you aren't really using the buttons on the controller to do much, while this is not always a bad thing and some games makes your moves are little complicated and strange, this game doesn't use anything well.
*First we will map the dash to the left analog stick with the click, this would make movement with dashing and other moves automatically work insanely better.
Secondly, we are going to think of other ways to traverse (this would affect story elements as well as designed levels) He has a chain, so why can't I use this chain in combination with my thrusts and swinging! Hey, now that sounds fun and brings in some interesting moments when I must use this power. I should be able to latch onto some kind of hooks and thrust my-self through the swing to build up an incredible amount of speed and swing to far distances, to either latch onto another hook or land on a platform that I would other wise never make it too with just dash or thrusting alone. Thrusing could be controlled with one arm, while the other arm is involved witht he swing,or if looked right during his swing animation it could actually come out of his feet and he can use both arms to swing.
next, since he does have a chain why not let him do other things with it in combat. Why I can't use Triangle or X to perform other moves and combos?
First, I would like the ability to wrap the chain around enemies, legs perhaps and then I can give them a nice tug and trip them up.
*this would move us on to some kind of ground pound (maybe thrusting off of them or just running over them with a dash move would create a slightly different animation and damae attack too perhaps) many many options to be tested to make it flow well and feel good.
Secondly, maybe I can just ignite them and set them ablaze after I have wrapped around them (taking off a lot more power to balance it)
Square could still be your melee and triangle could perhaps be your wrap up or grab button.
Then, there are many other things you could end up designing around the grab mechanic besides tripping and igniting.
Just a few of the ideas would be as follows
-a pull toward mechanic, then you can stop this pull half way to shoot a strong blast at them (such as a rocket) and send them back again. You could pull them close for some melees and maybe a grab and ignite move as well. You could also pull them in to create a sort of blast while holding them to shoot them quite far for a quick kill as well.
After I had the basics down, I'd start working on enemies to combat some of the things your able to do to balance at the fun and progression. I'd then also add in some type of combo system to keep your moves feeling interesting and engaging.
melee really needs to step it's game up in this series.
With the melees and move set being greater, more diverse I don't think you would even need more powers (especialy powers that are just basically a re skinning) Focus on the combat and style of one or two powers.
