Some equate this to a straight to DVD. It's not bad, but it's not quite up to the standards of its predecessors.

Don't expect a patch to fix the animations anytime soon. the blend shape for each character need to be completely redone. In some cases, rigging will need to be completely redone. Every single line of dialog will have to be redone. For a game that has so much dialog, that would take a very long time. But it can be done I would guess.

I don't know if the actual blend shapes need to be done, per se, but the interpolation between them. There could be plenty of good ones in there that are blending weird, or used at the wrong time. I mean, I saw a vid of characters talking about someone dying like they were discussing the weather. They didn't even call a sad face state. For all we know, they have code that calls the wrong blend shapes, or times itself wrong and doesn't read the introduction of one and thus skips it. The big problem is they'd have to check every conversation. of course, it could be as you say, and they just suck at making expressions, but I've seen some vids where it looked passable.

The other stuff, like characters popping in, and rigs getting stuck in variations of the setup pose are them borking the engine.

I watched a PS4 stream of a guy going around a snow planet last night, for a good 30 minutes. The game looks like pure fun. It reminds me quite a bit of ME1 but with better combat and gameplay systems (UI is questionable though). The biggest issue this game probably has right now is that it's too close to Breath of the Wild release, which may go down as one of the greatest games ever made. Any "open world" game is now going to be compared to BOTW whether the comparison is apt or not.

Sure, Andromeda probably needed another couple of months to cook in the pot, but there are a lot of positives that bode well for the future if you're willing to look. It's based on a fantastic engine that is now underpinning most of the big EA games, so we know it will continue to be developed and supported. The setting has been released from the original trilogy's constraint of an over-arching menace, which means story telling can go in any direction now. Games like TW3 and BOTW have brought more people into the open world fold, and overall I think that's a good thing for Mass Effect and the sci-fi genre, which unless I'm mistaken, is the only AAA open world sci-fi out there. The combat, which was considered one of the weaker points of previous ME games, is now pretty widely praised. EA is known for getting a framework to market and then iterating it - whether that's good or not for consumers' pocketbooks is a real question, but you can't deny the interative improvements. Battlefield, Battlefront, the sports franchises (except NBA LIve ... we don't discuss NBA Live) usually benefit from this approach.

If I'm a business guy, I look at this and I say, OK it's a decent effort and will generate good revenue because of the name. But there is enough here to feel confident that subsequent entries on this line of products are going to have ever increasing returns.

I think this is a game that will be knocked for all of the above, but over time the reception will soften. This is not a NMS-level fiasco, it's just a game that released a bit too early and needs some maturation. It came out right after one of the greatest open world games of all time. But it's also a flagship franchise in a story (content) rebirth, with a strong technical foundation behind it. I think comparisons to Destiny, in terms of ongoing potential, make a lot of sense.

There's a bit of a fanboy rant for you, but you don't have to squint much to see what I'm saying.

Many people are saying 3rd wave feminism & SJWs are causing uglification of women in games, so they look 'real'.

Hmmm

I bet the only legit solution will be some diehard fan who releases a PC mod.

Not sure what to say. On one hand having worse animations than a game from 10 years ago is unacceptable. On the other hand it just goes to show how spoiled we are. If everything else about the game is stellar then it is what it is. What really matters in the end? The gameplay or some stiff animations. Clearly the B team was at work here. Rather have a game that's rough around the edges but great when it matters than no game at all. I'm glad they made it. We don't have any other massive open world sci-fi games on this scale.

I watched a couple videos tonight and thanks to this thread can't seem to get past the janky eyes of the characters. I probably would have not thought twice if I had just bought but now I can't un-see them. I need to keep reminding myself that I've played hundreds of games that look far, far worse and enjoyed them thoroughly.

lol

yes it is in comparison to other recent games and other games in the series.

6/10 from gamespot caused me major alarm.
I hear its like Dragon age and I hated that game.

Hopefully Sony refunds my 100 to my wallet.

New team and still scoring well.

I miss Casey Hudson. I forgive him for ME3.

At MS now so maybe he will head some of their big games rather than just VR

Eight hours in, currently marauding around the snow planet. Game is fun man. Not great, but it is fun. Sure there's dodgy animations every now and then, some meh lip syncing as well as cheesy writing in places and some boring quests here and there but it's giving me that sci-fi Mass Effect fix. Running around doing odd jobs at the Nexus, meeting new people, figuring our their angles, exploring some nooks and crannies and learning about the world as well as some really fun combat. Going biotics crazy with Charge and Nova, combined with the jetpack dash and a shotgun I'm tearing things up, the jetpack is a lot of fun to use once you get to grips with it.

It's not the jaw dropping GOTY contender sci-fi game I think we all hoped for after all these years, but there's a fun game in here, it just comes with a bit of sloppyness on the side.

Played for a few hours tonight, this game could have used at least another 6 months of dev time, the faces look like they are saints row quality lol. It's not a bad game don't get me wrong, haven't really gotten far into the story or anything yet and the gameplay is fine but it just seems like Bioware still hasn't learned that it takes more than just dialogue to connect to a character. With all of the time you spend in conversations with close ups on the characters faces you'd think they would have made high quality facial animation a priority.

You also heard it was like Destiny:laugh:

Stop listening to these review sites, man. They are useless. Nowadays it is so easy to determine if a game is worth while or not thanks to the multitude of pre-release gameplay that we get.

Don't agree with this... The only time reviews won't matter as much in my purchases is if I already am a fan of that said series.

why is this not out today.. i am getting sick of these thursday releases
??? . Monday afternoon I purchased the digital version from the ps store for my pro. It pre downloaded and unlocked at 12am today . Since it was so late I only got to play through the first mission . Love what I have seen so far . Reminds me a lot of mass effect one . Can't wait to sink more hours into it!

###never mind. I just noticed it releases on the 23 for the UK. That's strange it would not release on the same day for all countries . Wth...

Not strange at all, it is EA. No clue why the biggest game company can't manage to do what many smaller companies do. Especially when it comes to big high profile games.
