Microsoft At E3 2018

Maybe it's just time for Microsoft to bow out of the console business....

Totally disagree.

Right now, no one has an issue playing with controller because we've been playing consoles for 35+ years.

When you add official KBM support, it will be adopted by a percentage of players. Maybe it's 2%, maybe it's 10%.

So you have a percentage of your friends who now have to play in seperate queues. Not good.

If there's not seperate queues, you have a player base with a wider skill gap. The good keyboard and mouse players are now significantly better than average to below average.

Seperate queues aren't ideal because matchmaking takes forever for the smaller population of players.

KBandM also sucks because it removes control from game creators and allows players to spin 1080 degrees in .04 seconds with pinpoint accuracy. That's fine for some games. Other games, not so much.

Keyboard and mouse support on consoles is just an objectively bad idea. Keep it far far away.

I’ll usually be playing with my friends that want to play in the controller filtered playlists. I always think consumer choice is a good thing. The base can segment by moving to other platforms as well.

I dislike k/m for action games and shooters but they do open up other genres to console gamers. Would like to try Halo Wars with a k/m and Age of Empires can now come to consoles. K/m also makes it easier to create Forge maps or edit your sports franchises.

Well, I'm just talking about their E3 show, not about what happens this calendar year. You can put on an impressive and exciting E3 show, even if your newly announced games are a ways off. It's about the amount of new and surprising material you bring -- the amount of stuff that can get core gamers excited and talking -- even if that stuff is still a year or two away. I think that's the kind of show MS will have.

But MS need a lot of that new and surprising content. Which highly unlikely...and the emphasis on new is paramount. Announcing a new Fable isn't enough, it needs to be a massive departure from previous games. Same with Perfect Dark. If Perfect Dark was a battle royale game for example then it helps against the criticism.

New IPs are what it is about, though....and plenty of them. And 3rd party exclusives will only half dampen the criticism.

And where will all these new IP's magically appear from? It cost truckloads of money to create new game concepts and when they do finally come out normally for Xbox 1 of 2 things happens: Either the game didn't live up to the hype or the game was pretty good it's just the sales weren't great so MS got burned.

It's pretty obvious Microsoft has gone with a "If you build it they will come" approach the last few years. We build the killer hardware, you guyz make the killer games. This would be a pretty cool way of doing things except for the fact that Sony one ups that s*** on the regular. The hardware is basically the same (no need for a debate here they both use AMD hardware so in the GRAND scheme of things the hardware difference is nominal), the difference being Sony gets to have all the multi-plats and they are providing the exclusive content.

Microsoft has put so much work into the Xbox brand. It's a great piece of hardware, the controller is the best, Xbox Live is pretty great and a big income stream for them, but it's not enough. Halo and Gears of War ain't gonna cut it, and no one cares about Sea of Thieves and do we really think the next Crackdown is going to live up to the hype or actually even sell that great?

I'm not being all doom and gloom I freaking LOVE Xbox, just being a realist.

Cause I tell ya.....if Microsoft said no more Xbox but released the Xbox controller on PS4/5 and then published Halo and Gears on PlayStation I personally wouldn't feel like too much has been lost. They say competition drives the industry but what is Xbox doing right now that actually gives Sony some competition? Microsoft and Sony won't even bother trying to make custom proprietary hardware anymore for crying out loud.

I agree they need a lot of new content, but I think the amount you have in mind is probably more than I do. To me, 3 big, new AAA exclusives would probably be enough to impress -- assuming the games are good, of course (not including Halo and Forza here, just talking new titles).

I think the new Fable will be a big departure. It's a different studio, and I expect they'll want to bring a fresh vision to it, rather than just try to ape Lionhead's work (which wasn't all that great anyhow). I hope they tell us about it this E3, with some details, not just a brief teaser.

lol hey it all comes down to money. If MS is doing very well with the Xbox division despite Sony and Nintendo's success....then keep at it. If they can toss truckloads of money at new IP's that might not amount to anything but are still making money....then keep at it.

I truly don't know how much the Xbox division profits Microsoft, or if they have been operating at a loss for awhile. If they are making a hefty profit then there is no sense in debating anything, it's all good. I surely don't WANT the Xbox to go away. But if MS were to reveal they've been taking a hit for a few years now I wouldn't be like "OMG you just need IP's and then you will make profit!" Nah. I'd be like you had a nice run, thanks for the memories, now publish on PC and PlayStation and even Switch and watch the money pour in without the stress of being in the hardware aspect of it. Saddest loss simply saying goodbye to Xbox Live.

I think they are profitable. But also too unwilling to risk that profitability.

Xbox one X is my favorite console. But there's something fundamentaly wrong with their creative process.

I've spent more money on Xbox hardware this gen than on software. That's backwards.

phil wanted the hardware and services right 1st. Hes fix the f*** up that was xbox one in 2013.

now the games will come. May not be til next year but i expect 5+AA/ AAA games announced this E3. They will want to feed gamepass regually to gain more subs and to keep them.

really whats the point of gamepass if they dont have exclusive content.

what i think we will see;
halo
forza horizon 4
fable

maybes
perfect dark
crimson skies
mech assault

wishes
ryse2
marvel licence game
alan wake 2

I think MS would be making a big mistake if the rumored spin off game isn’t an ODST game w/ a battle royale mode or simply a straight ODST battle royale game for like 20 bucks(or free) with cosmetic micro transactions.

I hope the rumored Perfect Dark game is real. It would be dope to play as Joanna Dark again. And I’m down for a mech game until Titanfall 3 is announced lol.

Other than that, I hope MS at least has one big new fAAA exclusive franchise to announce. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing MS set their tone for the remainder of the gen. Maybe announce their line-up for the 2 years or something.

Favorite hardware (what a sexy beast) but most of my gaming isn't done on it.

You've purchased 200 games or is that including game pass and games with gold titles? I have like 40+ but a few are either free game with gold or EA access games or GP, most of the ones I bought I got on sale. I re-subbed GP for state of decay 2 but I may just cancel again and buy the game when it comes out, still not seeing anything that appeals to me personally on GP worth paying the money for.

I really don't buy that "we had to do the hardware" first line Phil spits out, 1st party devs don't make the hardware, they've had hardware that HAS to be supported no matter what on the market the entire time and they've known the entire time that games are their biggest weakness, that should have been the priority. The One X is a nice piece of hardware but it's not expected to be their biggest selling system so why prioritize that over games? I like my One X a lot but had it come out a year later and $100 cheaper all while having more high end exclusive to play on it I think that would have been the better call and made more sense. By the time they get some new AAA IP's going it'll be time for another hardware refresh by both MS and Sony.

3 isn't enough to squash the criticism...unless all 3 come within a year. I mean how many new big IPs from MS this gen? 3, Quantum Break, SOT and Sunset Overdrive..two of which were launch games. That is pitiful.

Simple fact is that MS is stuck with this criticism for the remainder of this gen. All they can do now is try build up consumer confidence for next gen.

The xbox division makes more than enough to cover the cost of a constant slew of new games...and cost isn't a good excuse, especially when your financially inferior competition is doing it on a regular basis.

Think they will add XBL support for Xbox OG games? What about:

Elite 2.0 controller
Cross play with Steam
Keyboard/Mouse support
Exclusive games for Xbox only, not for PC
Dolby Vision added

I honestly don’t care much about new IP just for the sake of having them. People sound like a broken record with this stuff, but then they hardly ever put their money where their mouth is. MS problem is they have been too formulaic with the IPs they have, and they have been unwilling to pull from the pool of their lesser used ones. As much as Nintendo annoys the hell out of me, you can say one thing, they aren’t afraid to exploit and violate their IPs for new content. They need to get more comfortable exploring outside the box with their current resources and let creativity take over.

Give me a new or reimagined:

Crimson Skies
Blast Corps with multiplayer
Jet Force Gemini
Perfect Dark
Kameo
MechAssualt
Phantom Dust
Shadowrun
Sudeki
Fusion Frenzy

Branch out from there:
Halo Battle Royale
Gears RPG
Smash Bros-esque game with MS characters

Use stuff you own but haven’t capitalized on yet like:
True Fantasy Live Online
Scalebound

That's funny. If MS's studios can't come up with new, creative games then their problems are far worse than we feared.
