Nintendo Super Thread of General Discussion

Dude I used to love that game! Look on YouTube people use the music composer thing and do full covers of Nintendo songs and stuff. It's pretty cool.
Former Console Warrior of the SEGA Master system myself, sadly late to the part as by the time I got it the Saturn was already being replaced by the Dreamcast. But by golly I took my little rifle, suited up and reported for the battlefield, only to find out that by now all the Nintendoids had a wife and children and didn't care any more.

Gosh darnit.... well at least I'm willing to admit that I would have been even happier if my parents could have afforded both and since I was under 10 years old... it makes me a little less sad than what you find on N4G. Seriously Middle aged men acting like real 12 year old Console Warriors on a playground.

In any case, after a while took a vacation job and got myself a Dreamcast. But by now one can only find this kind of gaming, SEGA or Nintendo, in the Nintendo side of things. Plus as earlier stated, most of the fanboys of that era have grown up, and would just as likely have played the opposing brand if they got a chance ;).

But all joking aside, it was a great time was it not, often feel gaming hasn't aged well. Not because of the games and practises like Free 2 Play or cash shops, but by the manner adult gamers tend to behave. They like a horde of ruffians with so much asinine that they surpass a sulphuric acid in PH's value. It is like they feel that the only way they can have fun, if they ruin yours, quite odd how the Average Gamer got older yet the behaviour more childish ;).

For that reason I really do enjoy this forum, seems like a bunch of exceptional fellows and ladies around here :).

Found my old snes and some of the games I had (still missing much):

Actually that is the same casing they used in Europe, we also got that sleek casing. I really do not understand why Nintendo of America choose that god awful design while it was launched into other territories looking sleek and modern. Was it a cost cutting effort? Or where there other reasons?

I guess someone thought boxier was better ? Same thing happened to the PC Engine when it landed in the U.S. as the TG16, I mean WTH lol

Jup but I know the reason for that one, it is quite silly :).
The people doing the distribution for the PC Engine in the USA thought that the console was so small and "Americans won't pay that much for small things, they won't believe it is powerfull!". So they basically fitted the main board into the right side of the casing leaving a gaping waste of space on the left.

But that wasn't done with the SNES, in general the size is about the same. I just wonder what they where thinking when changing the design, must have been a reason.. but then if you look at European Box Art for Megaman 1 and 2 and the American ones....

Heck in my opinion the European one blows even the Japanese versions away, not because they portray what the game is like though. To show what the game is like, the Japanese version is far superior, but the European Megaman box art is just well drawn with a really romantic/gloomy feeling to it :).

The first game's box art (last in this post), remains my favourite. Close to the game and quite well drawn. Oh.. NOES! High resolution graphics! We'll be invaded soon by fanboys bickering that this is "next gen unworthy!". My goodness the Megadrive even claimed "High Definition Graphics";).

In true Neogaf mobstyle, we should hold Nintendo and SEGA responsible for their lies! :D

Interesting, never knew that about the TG16. The Turbo was the first console I bought with my own cash so it holds a very special place in my heart :D

Uh , North American box art is hideous for the old consoles. They all seemed to favor that Flash Gordon movie from the 80's

Well, he looks like a attractive looking man, but that is about it. The thing is it seems that box art is a lost art to begin with. Konami still practised it for a long while, just look at the Metal Gear box arts, but even they've given up. In box arts for home computers like the MSX but also Consoles like the NES, very often the picture was hand drawn and very well drawn as well. it was something that stood out. A good example of this is the works of a rather flaming artist, who drew a bit too much h*** erotic porn on the side: Oliver Frey. He was able to draw fantastic covers for ZX spectrum games and the ZX spectrum game magazines. Now that was a bit before my time, but the man could seriously put some feeling into his box art and cover designs.

Other examples are the old Konami covers and SNK covers for games like Nemesis (MSX) and The Last Blade. It just stands out, sets an atmosphere and tries to pull you into the game. Even though the box art often looks nothing like the game, and sometimes doesn't even portray the actual game; It however does set a certain mood which I feel is missing a bit in modern box art.

Most modern box art look like collages of in game screen shots and 3D models printed out on the cover. IN the case of American versions, it's often zoomed in pictures of facial models. Which is odd, as there are quite a few very good artists out there on sites like Deviant art that would be very capable of handling such a project and thus also getting some nice financial solvency themselves.

PS:
I just have to add, before you will go look for Oliver Frey on Google image search, he drew A LOT of h*** erotic art. And because of how the Internet works, that sadly floats to the top. Do add "ZX Spectrum" or something like "Gaming" to your search query if you are a bit insecure about seeing such pictures. Both picture genres are outstanding quality, just the sleazier of the two being cheap... as well they are porn.

Just so you've been warned. Please do not get angry at me over this, and do remember to keep the minors out when you do go look for this without the added ZX Spectrum or a safety filter enabled.

Oh talking about PC engine, I loved how Richter Belmont looked in the PC ENGINE CD game Castlevania:Rondo of Blood. I always found him too vampire like in the later games, too skinny too for a non vampire super hero. The anime scenes in Rondo of blood really make him look like some German Student from the early 1800's :). On top of that the anime scenes are hilarious, and Dracula is a bit too flamboyant and easy to love :p. He is downright comical at a level of wishing to hug him. Adorable in a way, but that is about the only downside I can find in the game.

  • But then this was before they gave him an original look, before that he always looked like he was from a movie. Original Castlevania: Dracula played by Bela Lugosi
  • Super Castlevania: Vampire from the Hammer Horrors (Red headed Vampire: Baron Meinster played by David Peel from Brides of Dracula. Hammer Horror version).
  • Castlevania X: The much Awaited Christopher Lee version, though a lot smoother skinned, but same combed back hair and stoic looks in accepting death when it finally is ... in escapable.
  • Castlevania bloodlines, both red haired Baron Meinster as the raven haired Christopher Lee version are shown.
  • Castlevania 2: Simons Quest: A far creepier and undead looking Bela Lugosi version.. which makes a lot of sense considering you just collected his body parts ;).
  • Castlevania 3: Christopher Lee I suppose, but still I can't get over how much they made Alucard look like a Televangelist Preacher on the American cover for that one. Just look at it: He can shout "PRAISE JEEBUS!" at any given moment :).

No, if I do like how they changed his looks with the Saturn and Playstation generation, that does look very vampiric. I just can't get over Richter, but I suppose it is a different crowd :). Still PC Engine Richter is the best Richter in my books, plus that completely German spoken introduction, marvellous. Especially when you can understand it I suppose, it then gets a bit silly but still... just marvellous. It doesn't even have an accent, unlike the English spoken by Japanese people in Japanese only games. To say it in DOGE language: Such care, Much work, many hard hours. WOW long days.

Most will disagree but the last good Castlevania I played was X and followed many years later with Super Castleania IV. SOTN bored me to sleep..literally not once but twice lol.

Was genius of Konami using German language in X.

Me too, easily top 5 arcade games last gen. Shadow Complex was a pretty modern "interpretation" of Super Metroid, in the weapons weapons and to a good extent the world layout.

I think it is my favorite XBLA game. I'm going to start playing through again sooner or later.

Loved SOTN it was Castlevania meets Metroid. Liked Lords Of Shadow as well.
Although Metroidvania is fine, I do feel it has replaced Castlevania in 2D too much. I really miss the old style with linear levels that branched off a bit. It felt a bit like Konami just wished to milk dry SOTN until it was nothing more then a shell of ashes held together by the lost hopes of Castlevania fans everywhere. Also the woman who designed the characters, named Kojima but no relation, made the characters a bit too Fangirly for my taste. This was shown to a dreadful extend to Richter Belmont. Alucard however does look better, there is no denying that.

Now, if only KOnami would allow Retro to work on a Castlevania game. Like DKC:Tropical Freeze in camera viewpoints, but then slower and far darker. A throwback to Super Castlevania IV, Caslevania 3 and Castlevania Bloodlines :). Come on Nintendo... lobby a bit and give us something to sink our hungry canines into!

The German was just a fantastic touch, as it was the language of the time. Germany was on the rise back then with their great thinkers and artists. Even to this day in former Satellite Soviet states German still is a more important and spoken language than English. It does really make sense to use it in a game set in that particular territory and timespan.

SOTN was fantastic. Even bought it on XBLA for 800 pts though I had for PS1 15 years ago. The problem with the game though is that enemies don`t scale at all, so you get to that point vs. any creature where there is zero chance of being in danger and then gets to a pt where the enemy literally does 1 pt of damage against you. More of an annoyance.

SOTN wasnt a bad game but it felt so different from the Castlevania games before it. Awesome soundtrack :)

Damn I had forgot about Bloodlines, awesome game but a little easy compared to IV and Rondo.

My favorites
Rondo of Blood
Castlevania 3
IV
Rebirth
Bloodlines
Castlevania
Castlevania 2

For sure I am getting Smash. I will be probably getting Mario Kart and Bayonetta 2 as well.

I wonder E3 will give us, that could change my list.

I don't think X is coming this year, despite what Nintendo says. I'll probably be on board if it does, though.

For my 3DS: Yoshi's New Island and Kirby Triple Deluxe.

MK8, Smash, Bayonetta 2 are sure fire purchases but like you I cant imagine X making it west till 2015. Which will be pretty significant considering I do expect Zelda U for 2015 :)

E3 ? who knows lol

I am still clinging onto hope that Retro is working on Metroid Prime 4 and will be announced at E3 for a Fall 2014 release.

Well, like stated earlier, a Linear Castlevania by Retro would also be high up my wish list. They would be the guys able to pull it off and make everybody drool with envy while doing it :).

A 2d Castlevania game from Retro would rock no doubt but if we dont get a Metroid fix this year or next I may check myself into Betty Ford :)

Willing to bet Wayforward could knock out a 2d Castlevania or Metroid game and stay true to the originals.

Bayonetta 2's Wii U exclusivity due to changes in business situation

Bayonetta 2 would never have existed without aid from Nintendo, Platinum Games' creative producer JP Kellams stated in a recent presentation, defending the decision to bring the sequel to Wii U.

A video from the presentation offers some insight into why the game is not available on alternative platforms. Kellams explains how Bayonetta 2 was only made possible through a relationship with Nintendo following what he describes as a change in the business situation.

Responding to a question of how the developers of the original Bayonetta hope to keep their fanbase now that they are moving to a new platform, particularly after a shift in publishers, Kellams says:

"Without getting into some stuff that is both business and confidential, the simple question I'd like to ask you is, ‘Do you want to play Bayonetta 2?' Bayonetta 2 would not exist without Nintendo white knighting that project," said Kellams. "So while I totally understand that people want to play it on the platforms that they've played it on previously, we really wanted to make Bayonetta 2.

"But if you were going to sell a game on a Nintendo platform, what publisher would you choose? Right, Nintendo. Right? So if you're going to sell a game on a Nintendo platform, the publisher that you want to be with is Nintendo because they know how best to service their audience and they're going to do the best job of explaining your game to that platform.

"You very rarely see huge, major third-party successes on Nintendo platforms because it's really hard to fight against Mario, right? It's why Universal isn't as big as Disney. I mean, it's really hard to fight somebody on that kind of turf, so..."

The studio's original plans for the sequel changed following what Kellams refers to as a change in business situation. While the original Bayonetta was published by Sega, the upcoming sequel is now being published by Nintendo.

"We really wanted to make Bayonetta 2. And Bayonetta 2 is a project that we were passionate about. And when we couldn't... when the business situation changed and we couldn't make it the way that we were originally planning on making it, we definitely wanted to make sure that our project survived. I've seen Bayonetta 2 - I look at it every single day of my life when I'm in the office. It's really cool and the world is going to be a better place because Bayonetta 2 is in it."

Kellams' statements echo those of the studio's executive director Atsushi Inaba who said Nintendo was a key partner in getting the game made.

"We are not viewing this as a change of platform," Inaba told Polygon in an interview at Tokyo Game Show 2012. "We were looking for a partner to createBayonetta 2 and Nintendo was a strong, cooperative partner that was willing to create and grow Bayonetta 2 together [with us]. As a result the platform became the Wii U."

For Bayonetta 2 I'm hoping they didn't tack on worthless GamePad features. Really just want to use the Pro controller with that game.

Played through DKCTF using only the pro controller and it felt great. No since tacking on something that is not needed

Hmm...I have the chance to go to Europe for two weeks this summer. It would mean that I have to save up $2,000, so my list that I posted last night might be a bit shorter...a lot shorter, haha.

I wouldnt pass up that opportunity especially for a game.
