I don't think Mass Effect would be as good of a game if most of the content were procedurally generated, compared to what it is now.
They should just focus on writing a good story with great characthers and put enourmous amounts of detail into creating custom locales, and a big universe.
This is a completely different beast - they put you out in space and have you make your story...

Not everyone can do procedural generation really good either. :-/

It were fantastic with the original Elite back in the day - that were kind of like what this game end up as (I hope) - in a RPG like Elder Scrolls:Oblivion , mostly everything were handcrafted - the main exception were the Oblivion Towers were procedurally generated, I were super-hyped before trying it..
When playing it tough, I quickly discovered the Oblivion Towers were not that fun.. - it were by far the worst part of the game, since it only had 3 different layout-types - but extreme amounts of different various ground and wall-textures were, so it were basically 3 dungeons over and over... :-/
Whenever a Oblivion-tower spawned, I ended up exploreing abit on the first floor until I figured out what type of dungeon I were in, and what 3 different types of random resource had spawned in it.
And once that were done I dropped all my weaponry, clothes and armour, to become really light and quick, and ran superfast to the top and grabbed the Oblivion-stone ending the tower. So I could get out into the handcrafted but really good designed world again much quicker.

So, not all games will get better just because you don't know what around the next corner...
However, that beeing said, the option of generating some sort of custom randomized galaxy to play in addition to the main campaign after game's end, would be cool..:)
But the main campaign of that franchise I want to be designed by humans as much as possible.

But remember, EA and Bioware are big players in the industry, and ironically, it means they can't deliver the kind of awesome an indie team can! And I'm half-serious when I say that :D

I'm honestly more excited about this than anything Bioware related. lol

now they did lose everything in that flood last year, not covered by flood insurance

Microsoft was said to have helped them
if true then Microsoft has even more class, to have this game come out on sony platform first
if they [Microsoft]helped them get back on their feet after the flood, then they went with sony...
no way would I buy this game, nor support them
I will dig further into this

I don't care if they kicked every puppy at MS, I'm still getting this game as soon as it launches on X1.

I'm getting it as soon as it launches. I'll even buy a PS4 for it if I don't have by then.

This game sounds awesome. Permanent death is very very intriguing. So you got to play it very cautiously and think about your actions before you perform them.

People are way too high on this game. It's got an interesting concept and nice art direction. An interesting concept and nice art direction a game does not make.

well to be fair alot of games show demos etc and don't even end up like what they show. No way to tell, but I love the concept of it.

I think the perfect sci fi game would be this mixed with what Destiny is doing.

There is no proof that MS actually helped them at all. For all we know Sony got help to them sooner or they already had a deal in place before MS offered any assistance. It could also be because of MS's prohibitive indie rules that the game isn't coming out on X1 at the same time.

I love the 60's sci fi style this game has. It's a fresh take on the genre.

Plus going from a planet's atmosphere to space and then to other planets seamlessly is freaking cool even if it is highly stylized.

Whether the game holds my interest or not is another story.

The game looks great and sounds great. All that really needs to shown, proven, told, is how diverse and varied everything is. If they nail that then this could be the greatest game this generation. There is far more known about this game than just a concept and its visuals.

We don't even know what you do in this game yet. I'm pretty sure nailing that is more important than environment variety at this point.

It might not be a concern for some, but the way they've avoided talking about the multiplayer concerns me. They've dodged around explicitly saying whether you can play directly with friends online, and I don't understand why unless they the answer is just a simple no, which they might think will disappoint a lot of people? I also share the concern that the game might not have the variety they are implying it does. It's a very ambitious game for a small team and unless they've got some incredible technology to build the game with you would think they will have to cut some corners somewhere.

They talk about No Mans Sky a lot in the latest Bombcast and everything I heard has gotten me more excited about it. The Giantbomb guys aren't known to feign interest in a game like IGN and they were gushing about this one.

It also sounds like we're going to get P v P multiplayer in the game if what was said during the podcast is true.

What do you man by that ? I mean this game has no real story. It is not typical adventure game with a 6 hour story and 10 hours of side missions. We explore. We find things. We upgrade things. We shoot things. What you do is completely up to you. You create your own story. You create your own game...so to speak. Given just the basic Idea and concept of this the absolute key to its longevity and success is actually variety. Variety in environments, animals, space encounters, armour, ships, weapons...etc. Not just small little details either, but big obvious differences. If they fail here the game and concept is ultimately a failure too.

Having said that is actually a mysterious force driving everything which can be uncovered via lore around the universe. There also events that occur and you react to. What those events actually is seems irrelevant to me. What is relevant is just how many different ones there are. Variety, as I said, is absolutely critical to this game. In my opinion anyway.

Yeah, thats exactly what I was thinking. I reckon they're going with PS4 first and then if it goes well, they'll look at moving to X1/PC. which could potentially be years. I'm not waiting years for an X1 port. If there is nothing announced for X1 by the time this launches on PS4, then that's what I'm getting it on.

If it released for PS4 or PC first, then there is high chance it wouldn't be coming to X1, no thanks to the ID@xbox parity clause that self publish Indies must release their game at the same time as (or earlier) on XBOX platforms than competing platforms.

MS did mention that there may be exceptions, on a base by base basis.

I'm not worried about that clause. Games seem to be easily getting around it. This just released for example, in clear breach of that clause:http://www.totalxbox.com/78423/survival-horror-title-outlast-for-xbox-one-now-on-xbox-store/

Like I said, its base by case basis, & no one know the details, & MS will not reveal what are the special criteria to be met.

Maybe if the game sell well, maybe the developer next game must release first on X1. The fact is, this clause is not helping small studios, or the one man army Indies. Also its not for the good of MS, especially when they are not the market leader now, & by a fair margin no less, to demand something like this.

I do agree with you, that there are probably ways to get around this, & I think over time, it will be less & less enforced, & will even be pulled down once & for all eventually. From a developer stand point, you will not want to have a clause, that you cannot be certain to meet, when details are limited & unclear.

Yeah. It's a needlessly restrictive clause and its sure to be pulled eventually. I'll be getting this game on ps4 anyway as I'm not waiting the year or two for it maybe come to x1.

Not yet. I had planned to pick one before June, but I ended up having to buy a new car. I'm aiming for before the end of the year now.

Hopefully I will have one around the same time. X1 in September. PS4 around late November.
