Ohhh.... perma-death. s*** just got real!! Bring it on!!

Yeah perms death is intriguing. Only one shot at the game, it seems otherwise you start from square one?

Is this the game from that indie developer in The UK that had their office virtually wiped out in a flood?

Yep. It's good to see they haven't been stopped much. It was nice to see him in stage too; you could tell he was very appreciative about the opportunity to be given center stage like that, it looked like he was about to explode into tears of joy at any moment.

I'll be picking this game up for sure, it looks great.

Yeah, that was a nice moment of sincerity, in a conference full of canned speeches and sales pitches. His heart is in this game, that's clear. I'm sure he's grateful and a little overwhelmed about all the positive press.

Very intriguing for sure!

But only 4 guys working on it is that true?

Is this one of those games we're saying "what happened to No Mans Sky?" 5 years from now aka vaporware/tech demo?

Seems very ambitious and too good to be true type thing.

Still among the best indie games shown out there, but watching the vids, you can explore space and planets. You can dogfight and fight on the ground. Random generated type stuff.

But it has an empty feeling so far. I'm assuming the game will have missions, maybe an overarching storyline, character leveling etc......????

If it were a Bioware-sized team, you'd get all that. But with 4 guys?

I guarantee there are going to be people who complain and gripe that the game doesn't have X or Y. I think it's really important to keep the tiny size of the dev team in mind. Four guys. We need to keep our expectations realistic. It's easy to get carried away in the grand scope, imagine the possibilities ... in reality, it's going to be limited in a hundred different ways. It has to be.

I agree 100%.

I'd be curious to see if this was still a four man team. Did they mention the current size of the team at the presser?

I didn't hear anything about that. I'm assuming it's still 4 guys.

I don't think so. I could be wrong, but I think the game is pure sand box ala Minecraft.

Can anyone else confirm/deny?

Right and wrong. It does not have missions per se, but there is some kind of malevolent force driving everything. The major emphasis though is exploration. You dont level character though ( as far as I can tell), in stead you explore to find new resources, which in turn allow you to get/build better ships, armour..etc.

Thats the impression I got. Very bold move if it turns out to be true.

I'm kind of speechless after watching that.

It is impressive.

I do have a concern though...with no real mission structure or specific objectives, I fear it may get repetitive and boring rather quickly. I know all the worlds are different, but if what you end up doing in those worlds is pretty much the same thing, then that will not be good.

It would be a shame if that happened.

Minecraft says hello.

Sure Minecraft has an end game now, and overall has vague objectives like to build a shelter and collect resources, but other than that, you are free to do whatever you want. This sounds very like that. Collect resources, improve your suit/ship, travel further... or don't. Fight... or don't. The thing I can't quite grasp is the concept of how the game is infinite. I don't see how this is possible given that hardware has finite resources. Surely the game can only expend so far before it hits some processing wall for example.

Never played it, or have a want to. but, doesn't minecraft revolve around the idea of building ? While the process may be the same it is the creation that keeps it interesting. That is not the case with No Mans Sky.

As for being infinite, not sure. With there being no load times and everything being seemless, I can only assume it uses the RAM in some clever way.

I am looking forward to playing this game, I hope it delivers the kind of experience they are talking about.

Yes, building is the core idea of Minecraft but you don't have to. Traveling seems to be the core idea of No Mans Sky, but again, you don't have to. Anyway.. your original comment was on "no real mission structure or specific objectives"

As I said... Minecraft has no real missions or objectives and in that regard is very similar to that the creator of No Mans Sky was trying to explain. It's just as nebulous a concept as as Minecraft seems to be and thats one of the biggest selling games in history.

There has to be some sort of dedicated servers here. The idea of everyone starting on the outer ring of a galaxy and being aware of each other, and potentially never finding each other can't really be supported without some kind of server infrastructure. This is probably an always online game as well, at least in the way Dark Souls is anyway.

I understand the explanation. I understand you play it how ever you want to play. My fear is it not having enough meat to it to sustain the sort of playtime a game like this warrants. Will their be enough cool random events. How far and varied are the weapons, abilities, ships and armour upgrades/creation. How big of an impact will trade routes have on your overall game universe.

When I think of something like Borderlands which had the ridiculous weapon counts, it sounded awesome. In reality though I found it rather weak. Most guns were very similar with small differences. Which in the end got boring and annoying. Now that was just one aspect of that game.

The scope of the game is just so massive. Is hard to comprehend how you fill this infinite world with constant interesting things to do.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. Just how random is random going to be? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Yeah, I agree with what Menace is saying. If the game's main appeal is exploration, how interesting will the exploration be, over time? Will I encounter truly new creatures and environments, or will the planets start to feel the same after I see a dozen? That would be my main concern.

Awesome. Definitely nice to see that they weren't dealt a knock out blow. The game looks awesome, hopefully it'll make its way to the XB1

This looks to be a really cool game and i am definitely keeping an eye on this one. One of my favorite announcements at sonys conference.

Heard a talk with the dude on stage in the keynote, after the conference.

There are some misconceptions here..
They are no longer a 4-man studio, they were that on the first Joe Danger, but now they are 10 people, but not all of them work on this game (obviously ;)).

It's not only exploration - there are also various missions..
When you start out on your planet, you'll have 4-5 point of interests on your minimap on that planet, the minimap were turned off when they captured game-footage - because they are not yet satisfied with how it looks, if noone has been to the points of interests, you will need to go there to discover what is available there - it might be resources you can mine to upgrade your space-suit, or space-ship, or a new species, a new combat-site, etc.
You will earn more stuff as you play, in some sort of a online bank account..

If you wanna be the explorer type, you might upgrade your to a much bigger hyperdrive-engine on your space-ship and get farther out in the universe - but less weaponry, if you wanna do battles and raids on space-stations, and similar, you'll probably be better off buy upgrading your weaponry, but then you won't be able to have the biggest hyper-engines..

He liked to play combat alot, battles are rather easy to escape for the most part - if you got into too much trouble - but if you do die, you might loose everything you have amassed into your space-empire. :-)

Man, this should have had a star wars coat of paint. Looks crazy awesome.

@kingrudi do you know if fuel and resources account for gameplay? bc I can see that making you stop on different planets more often.

Yea.
I'm fairly certain that you will need restock more fuel for your space-ship, as how he talked about it.
I were pretty tired when I saw the video, and listening to music aswell, but I believe I remember he said something about getting fuel as a resource on planet, or buy on space-stations, or from AI-traders.
He also mentioned that you can also manage/balance your ship to carry more fuel, I think it were on Day one coverage on Giantbomb, I saw it. :-)
