Monster Hunter series now at 48M

Monster Hunter: World has now shipped 7.5 million units on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which makes it the best-selling game in Capcom's history.

Capcom said today that Monster Hunter: World had been played by more than 7 million people, from a total of 7.5 million shipped units including downloads - a record high for the Japanese publisher.

That milestone includes both Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and is all the more remarkable for Monster Hunter: World being the first game in the franchise to launch on a non-Nintendo platform since 2006. It is also the first simultaneous global launch of any game in the series' history.

Capcom noted both of these factors in a statement released today, stating that "Monster Hunter: World has overcome both linguistic and cultural barriers" in finding this new level of success.

I seem to recall a Street Fighter selling more, about 8 million.

PUBG still in top 10, and it's early access. I have to wonder if there will be anyone buying the game once it goes gold, since early access already paid for the game.

I just hope they do a better job with future remakes, since it seems we'll never get another Bad Company game I'd love to see them remake BC2 but with new assets not just a low grade port that runs at a higher res than the original did.

It's crazy to me that even with the world's most powerful console Microsoft can't seem to win an NPD. It's almost as if games take precedence or something. People saying Switch momentum dying down a bit but is it really? They have about as many exclusive games coming right now as MS and sold 30k less. That's a good sign in my opinion. PS4 beasting like always.

Xbox One has had its best January and February this year.

Xbox One X momentum holding (I'm assuming that's why the bump). That's good. Most people were expecting it to peter out in early 2018. Should be (somewhat) interesting to see how long it hangs in there.

I wish we'd get numbers on the X vs. normal model split. I'm curious. I think I heard something suggesting the X ratio was like 1/3 of all the Xbox Ones sold, but I don't remember clearly. It's higher than the Pro vs. PS4 ratio, I'm pretty sure of that. Makes sense, of course -- better value proposition for upgraders.

Other notes:

After leading the market in January, Monster Hunter: World repeated as the month's top-selling title overall, once again leading on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. Unsurprisingly, Monster Hunter: World is currently 2018's best-selling game.

Sony's PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console in February, and remains the best-selling console year to date. Nintendo Switch remains on a record-setting sales pace.

Over the first twelve months in market, Nintendo Switch has achieved the highest installed base for a console platform in history.

I really think this is year where PS4 and Switch sales surge as people become mutli console owners. I can see PS4 owners buying the switch for exclusives and Xbox One owners jumping to buy a PS4 for its exclusive.I really think God Of War and especially Spider-man will be really hard to resist along with the PS4's back catalog of exclusives and PS4 owners will want a taste of Zelda, Mario and Smash Bros.

I wonder if PUBG was any of that 44% uptick?

1 out of 4 people who own the PS4 or the Xbox One also own the other console (per Mat P., NPD).

It's hard to say, on Amazon the One X has been behind the Pro every time I've checked over the last two months, they are both usually on the same page but the Pro always seems to be ahead. I was curious so I just checked right now and the PS4 is 34, Pro is 67, One X is 76 and 500gb One S is 92. You are right though it would be nice to see what the split is between the base consoles vs the upgraded ones for both companies.

Oddly enough in the US the X1X was always leading on Amazon the past month when I looked

Well, we know that the X1X outsold the Pro during Nov & Dec (launch-aligned).

But yeah, I'm curious what the ratio is for the Xbox One X is, relative to the normal Xbox One. If we had that, we could figure out how many people bought X's, at least in the US.

I was thinking it was 80/20.

That would be the same as the Pro ratio (1 to 4). I think it's higher than that, although I could be wrong.

edit: Actually my math is off. One out of every four PS4s sold is a Pro, so that's 25%. 20/80 (or 20%) for the X would actually be a bit lower than the Pro ratio. My guess is that it's higher...but it's just a guess, with some vague memory that maybe backs that up, but who knows.

Oh yeah I'm sure it did, the cost was higher but the desire to upgrade from the base console to the newer model was likely higher as well. X1 owners had the "weaker" console since the generation started, now they get to have not only a more powerful console but the most powerful one so I'm sure a lot more of them were ready to upgrade than base PS4 owners did with the Pro. What was it Sony said, something like 40% of Pro owners didn't own the standard console? I'd be shocked if the stat for new customers and One X ownership was anywhere near that.
