No AMD Polaris & x86 Architecture For Nintendo NX Claims Insider; Raw Power Much Closer To Xbox One
May 14, 2016 • By Aernout

Nintendo’s upcoming new console, the Nintendo NX, won’t be using x86 architecture and AMD Polaris chips if a Nintendo insider it to be believed.

nintendo-logo-635x401.png

Recently we reported on a rumor on how the Nintendo NX would be using x86 architecturealongside additional screen support. Additionally, it was said that Nintendo’s upcoming dedicated home console would feature a custom 14nm Polaris-like GPU. In theory, this chip was rumored to be twice as powerful as the current PS4 GPU. The rumor was debunked however by Nintendo insider, Emily Roger, who stated that this information was in fact, incorrect.

Rogers has now taken to her blog to talk more about the Nintendo NX architecture and its power. If Rogers it to go by, the Nintendo NX won’t be using x86 architecture, and the Polaris rumors circulating the web are “all wacky”.

After speaking to seven different people this week, I can say with confidence that this is false. NX is not using x86 architecture like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The NX has special, custom-made chips and the overall design of the hardware is very modern. The chips are industry leading because they are very modern chips, but having modern chips doesn’t necessarily mean Nintendo is aiming to create the most powerful hardware on the market. Furthermore, any NX rumors on “Polaris chips” and “Polaris architecture” are all wacky. There’s a good reason why those rumors are wacky.

The insider also had something to share about the “raw power” of the Nintendo NX, which should be much closer to the performance of the Xbox One, than Sony’s Playstation 4. According to what Rogers has heard, the NX won’t be directly competing with Sony’s PS4 Neo 4K.

“In terms of raw power, numerous sources tell me that NX is much closer to Xbox One than PlayStation 4. Even that might be stretching it a tiny bit. Anyone who is claiming that NX is “two times the power of PS4 GPU” is being misled by their sources. Based on what I’ve heard, I don’t believe the NX will compete directly with PS4 (Neo) / PS4K in raw power”, Rogers wrote on her blog.

The Nintendo NX is slated for a release in March 2017, and while it’s hardware will be industry leading, it won’t be going to “blow away any of the consoles on the market today”, according to Rogers.

To be perfectly honest, anyone thinking the NX would be double the PS4 in power was mislead by their own ignorance.

Eek, stretching it to say power of an x1? And no x86 architecture to boot? That does not sound good for third party ports...

Yeah I hope Emily Rogers is full of it.

But even if it is under powered, I'm more curious about the games. And what franchises they focus on.
If it's some of their off the wall stuff like Toads adventures or more Mario Sports, they can forget it.

If it's Galaxy or a Mario 64 style game with Metroid, F-Zero and some fresh NEW IP's I'm in.

Even if it's going to be underpowered I'd wish it to be x86 based at least, that way devs. would have an easier time porting games. From the sounds of it Nintey is gonna keep on keeping on... :(

NINTENDO PRESIDENT: NX IS NOT THE SUCCESSOR "TO THE WII U NOR TO THE 3DS"
May, 16 2016
"It's a new way of playing games"
Nintendo's president, Tatsumi Kimishima has reiterated that the Nintendo NX is an entirely new console for Nintendo, and will not follow the conventions of the company's currently released hardware.

Speaking in the same interview that revealed Nintendo is considering entering the film business, he made clear that not only does the company see it as a brand new project, but one that will outperform the Wii U:

"The NX is neither the successor to the Wii U nor to the 3DS", said Kimishima (as translated by NeoGAF user GSR). "It's a new way of playing games, which I think will have a larger impact than the Wii U, but I don't feel it's a pure replacement for the Wii U."

This is not the first time Nintendo has made this clear - late president Satoru Iwata hinted at a new direction for the company last year, saying:

"If you only expand upon existing hardware, it's dull. In some shape or form, we're always thinking about how we want to surprise players as well as our desire to change each person's video gaming life."

Both of Nintendo's current consoles, the Wii U and 3DS, are in some way iterations on the hardware that preceded them.

With the NX now officially scheduled to release in March 2017, rumours are swirling as to what form it will take.

Some have speculated that recent comments from a ROM chip manufacturer indicate that the new console will drop discs for cartridges, while a leaked survey suggested it may include connectivity between a handheld and a console.

Nintendo NX and PS4K Will Be Revealed at Tokyo Game Show, According To Report

Contrary to popular expectation, it seems like Nintendo will not be announcing the NX at E3 this year, opting instead to take the wraps off of their newest home console later this year. Simultaneously, it also sounds like Sony will hold off on announcing the PS4K, the mid life revision for the PS4 that bumps up the specs a little, for a while, too- a report by VRWorld claims that both machines are being prepped up for a Tokyo Game Show reveal.

According to the report, Nintendo is planning on hitting the March 2017 release date, while Sony will get the PS4K out by Holiday this year globally, to accompany their launch of the PlayStation VR as well. The PS4K will indeed have the kinds of higher specs that have been rumored- which will presumably ease the ability with which the console can handle VR titles.

Unfortunately, the report does not go into any specifics about the enigmatic NX, beyond that it will be revealed at TGS. This would not be unusual- Nintendo unveiled the Wii for the first time at TGS 2005, after all, so it makes sense that they want to repeat the stunt that gave them their most successful console yet.

Hopefully, though, we learn more about both machines before then- TGS is a few months away for now, after all.

Seems a bit late to unveil both pieces of hardware. Especially the PS4K if it is truly aiming for a 2016 release.

It is also a weird a place to unveil them. TGS doesn't get anywhere near as much worldwide coverage as E3.

TGS was where they unveiled the Wii so I gathered this. Sony obviously wants theirs to be announced just before release instead of people sitting on their wallets and waiting for 5 months.

"It's a new way of playing games"

The focus is the controller again...just make it a fleshlight already.

Fleshlight would nice with a weird Japanese VR game.

So the Nintendo NX isn't even as powerful as the PS4 i heard? More on par with the Xbox One. What are you doing Nintendo? Okay, it's not all about power but it sounds like they're going down the Wii U path again. Just don't mess up the controller and the online. Please.

No way they'll screw this up again.

Right?

The Xbox One and PS4 are built on than Nintendo ethos. So it would make sense for the NX to be in line with these 2 systems.

If Nintendo wants any 3rd party support beyond the first year they better make the console as easy to port PS4/X1 games to as possible. I could be wrong but I just don't see them repeating the Wii's success ever again.

Not 2 years later, and the fact that it isn't x86 like the other two is really not good news for third party support.

Top that off with this new PS4k console supposedly releasing before it.... that's not good for Ninty. They are going to have to price it LOW...

Can you show me a link where it says its a fact that its not x86?

I will admit to misusing the word- No one has facts. That was more of a figure of speech. I think that's a given. It's all rumor at this point, but the "leak" is here.

The same one that says it is going to be about as powerful as the X1.

As I have said before, Nintendo is shooting themselves in the foot by letting the rumors persist. They really need to give people something. The video you posted is just a guy speculating.

The vid you posted is just saying it makes sense that it would use x86- which is what I and others have already been saying, but the rumor is worrying and Nintendo has a history of dancing to it's own music.

Nintendo has always been my favorite gaming company, and I WANT the NX to be something I really want.

But the overall tone of the rumors has been..... disappointing. I know nothing is confirmed yet, but I'm not getting a great feeling about it.

I hope I'm wrong, and if so I'll be first in line to get one.

Do you know who the guy in the video is?

Do you know who the guy in the video is?

Nope, but they way he is speaking about makes it sound like he doesn't know anything about it, just what would make sense, and unfortunately the big N doesn't always do that, so...

He has leaked much info as he has had a bunch of sources.
Gaf has attacked his credibility to later be proven wrong.
I believe he is not allowed 2 confirm the x86 truth so instead is saying why it makes sense and yes he has done things this way in the past..
