NX: Nintendo's new next gen hardware

I really just want Fatal Frame 5 to get a US release. I don't care about hardware as long as i have software.

I can't imagine Nintendo having the most powerful console. With all those great first party games. They'd be all set.

So I'm guessing it'll be a holiday 2106 launch?

Anyone want to guess what they are going for? 'Innovation', a more powerful version of what they already have, etc? I'm confused as to the direction they're thinking.

I think they'll go the innovation route. No idea where they'll take that though.

If they've only just got their current systems to a point of profitability, I'd assume they'd like to run them at a profit for a year or two.
If they do release new hardware early, it should be backwards compatible and geared so that Wii U owners aren't cast aside the day it comes out.

If Nintendo does launch in 2016, that would be worse than Microsoft's early exit with the OG Xbox.
No way the Wii U is done(nail in its coffin was Zelda missing 2015). Them getting a headstart on the Next-Gen in the middle of this gen with the right hardware/games(Zelda possibly a launch title) would be huge.

I agree. But it would still be as short or shorter of a lifespan than the OG Xbox.

I'm not saying that shouldn't do it. They should. But only if the hardware is better than what's currently on the market.

Nintendo won't be talking about its new console, the NX, nor its quality of life initiative or push into smartphone games during E3 this year, said company president Satoru Iwata.

"We do not plan on talking specifics about the the NX until 2016," Iwata said during an investors meeting last week (as translated by Brian Ashcraft over at Kotaku).

"Presently, we cannot talk about the time period when it [the NX] will go on sale or what it's like. Because we are calling it a ‘new concept,' we are not thinking of this as a ‘simple replacement' for the 3DS or the Wii U."

Later, Iwata addressed some of the other new initiatives that the company is exploring.

"Incidentally, we're getting various questions for this year's E3, like ‘Won't there...

Oh boy. What kind of gimmick did they dream up this time?

I think Nintendo would do much better if they just built a standard console that wouldn't bleed dry of all third-party support within six months. Developers can't shoe-horn features into their multi-plat titles to take advantage of whatever unique gizmo Nintendo comes up with. It's not financially feasible for the long-term.

A head start didn't help the Wii U nor did the Wii suffer from launching a year after the 360.

Among comparable consoles like the 360/PS3, a Headstart can mean a lot. But Nintendo's problems are not related to when they launch, it's whether or not they can build a system that appeals to the general public, or not.

They tried that with GameCube it didn't work.

Yes and no. They definitely skimped on horsepower like they usually do, and the controller, while as close as they've come to industry standard in years, was still rather... unique. I'd like to see what Nintendo could do if they released a powerful console in the $350-$400 range with a controller that's like an evolved SNES controller with dual analogs.

Nintendo's first-party software is always a blast, but a console can't stay afloat on first-party games alone. Ditch the controller gimmicks to make the machine more appealing to developers with multi-platform titles, and give them enough horsepower to work with. I guarantee you that magic would happen. Imagine a machine where I could play the newest Mario and Zelda games AND the newest western RPGs (and Grand Theft Auto too - parental controls exist for a reason). I would buy that.

Wii U didn't have the right hardware. So 3rd party support is null as they invested lots of money in R&D for the PS4/XBO architectures.

If Nintendo released a console in 2016 with as good as if not better hardware then the PS4 and it launched with Zelda it would be a mega seller.
Oh and to make it even more successful drop the beyond failed Wii U ASAP

.

Probably a totally new Architecture then the wii/wii U.
Maybe even a GASP nVidia one!

The OG Xbox was much healthier then the Wii U. Heck its like the Virtual Boy of today.

Me too. Say it does release by 2017, it wouldn't be too hard to double the power of the PS4, save for the stupid gimmicks...

Yep, gimmicks cost hardware muscle for sure. I just wish they would go the SNES route, tons of games with a fairly powerful system.

If they made a console that can run most X1/PS4 games at 1080p /60, I buy.
