NX: Nintendo's new next gen hardware

Reggie suggests that NX is a home console:

"Nintendo announced a few months ago that it’s working on a new platform called “NX”. The company hasn’t elaborated any further, and never confirmed if we can expect it to be a home console or new portable system.

"That’s why recent comments made by Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime are quite interesting. Here’s what he had to say about NX in an interview with The Wall Street Journal (see a Q&A breakdown here):

"Reggie: 'We’ve also said publicly that we are already hard at work on our next home console and that’s another element we’ll be talking about much later.'

"Remember: Metroid Prime series producer Kensuke Tanabe, speaking with Eurogamer this week, also referred to NX as a console.

So what can we make of this? This definitely seem to be a strong hint – if not a confirmation – that NX will be a console rather than a handheld."

Why do I feel like Amiibos will be a big part of the next console?

It's a given by now that amiibo will be big for it, its succes is just crazy really. The way i see it. Nintendo must 'win' back the trust from third party publishers, otherwise this thing is dead on arrival if you ask me, or it will be another Wii U, which is almost the same really. It would be quite something if Ninty comes with much more powerful hardware than Xbox One and PS4, but it IS Ninty we are talking about, the company that thought it was a good thing to come with hardware similar to PS360 when X1 and PS4 were about to come out.

What if NX is a dual console/handheld? If you take out the DVD drive in the Wii U I'm betting it could be reduced to the size of a handheld. Or, somehow, the NX games while playable in a handheld also.

I think it will be a handheld that can stream to a TV through a Chromecast-like HDMI dongle.

GBA form factor, not dual screen, imagine a device that is just the bottom half of the new 3DS. About as powerful as a Wii U or maybe a little bit more. Games on SD cards (existing DS and 3DS games cards will plug in and work when streamed to a TV for the second screen) and digital downloads.

Also plays their phone games on the *gasp* capacitive touch screen.

Virtual Nintendo console library line up of NES, SNES, Gameboy, GBA, N64, Gamecube, DS, 3DS, Wii and Wii U games ready at launch. When laid flat in front of the TV it becomes a Wii sensor bar so you can use the Wii remote and nunchuck for Wii games on your TV. DS, 3DS and Wii U function works when streaming to a TV as you have dual screens - the TV and the handheld. NFC for Amiibo is in there as well.

Basically, the Wii U gamepad done right as you can take it anywhere and it is every Nintendo system ever in one (except Virtual Boy).

£150

Come get me Reggie!

PS. I haven't figured out the critical local multiplayer component yet other than, 'err, everyone bring your NX round and we will wirelessly link them....'

Or battery life.

Or how it will be profitable.

Or the name...

I thought about this kind of stuff during E3. Lots of games I'd like to see get the "good graphics" treatment. Imagine Star Fox for example.

Yeah, they could release another underpowered console with a bunch of old games they have re-made available multiple times over the decades :p

They should just make an uber-powerful new gameboy that can screen-cast. You also forgot about how you would store your games on a tiny handheld "console"

I may be the only one, but Mario to me was and forever will be a 2D side scroller. SMB3 was the last I truly enjoyed and yes, I had Mario64 and Mario Galaxy. I would be silly to say they were bad games, but I never came close to finishing either whereas th9e sidescrolling 1-3 took up hundreds upon hundreds of hours of my time.

For me, Super Mario Maker is almost enough alone to convince me to buy a Wii U. The video looks delicious and all but doesn't excite me to play it that way.

I loved watching Mario run through the various Unreal demos Epic has released lol

It's Nintendo so it will obviously have a whopping great hard drive, by which I mean a tiny amount of flash memory on board and an SD card slot.

Also let it play Android stuff.

So long, Ouya!

Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and many other iconic Nintendo franchises, has revealed he is not contributing to the development of the company's next gaming console.

Speaking in an interview with Forbes, Miyamoto said he is focusing his efforts on developing games, instead of participating to hardware development, as he has done in the past.

"I've pulled myself back out of some of the hardware section and I'm really focused on some of the software I'm involved in--for example, the new Starfox game," he said.

"Of course, I am observing and looking at the hardware, but I am not actively participating and making decisions."

Nintendo has confirmed its next home console is codenamed the NX, but the company has said it does not plan to fully reveal the hardware until 2016.

According to Forbes, however, Nintendo was discussing the console with third-parties at E3 2015 and insiders say the reception was "positive."

Shinya Takashi, who oversees Nintendo's software planning and development division with Miyamoto, said the duo are now focused on catching "the attention of a large number of players again and [getting] them excited."

"We’re constantly thinking about this idea from the perspective of the players and the needs of the players in terms of what can we can do with our ability and our technology to capture that excitement and passion," he said.

Elsewhere in the interview, Miyamoto reflected on the performance of the Wii U, saying he feels "people never really understood the concept behind the Wii U and what [Nintendo] was trying to do."

'I think the assumption is we were trying to create a game machine and a tablet and really what we were trying to do was create a game system that gave you tablet-like functionality for controlling that system and give you two screens that would allow different people in the living room to play in different ways," he explained.

"Unfortunately, because tablets, at the time, were adding more and more functionality and becoming more and more prominent, this system and this approach didn’t mesh well with the period in which we released it.”

At E3 2015, Nintendo revealed Star Fox Zero, which is being co-developed by Platinum Games, the studio behind Wii U titles Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101.

The video is simply amazing and what I would like a 3D Mario to be like. Hell, they can even make a 2D one but use the same styling in the video. Nintendo is so behind the times it's not even funny *sadface*

Hmmm...code name NX = Nintendo/Xbox partnership. Nintendo stops making consoles, all their 1st party console games are XBox exclusive.

Probability, next to nil. Can't imagine the meltdowns if it happened and what kind of shift it would cause in the war.

Or they could call it "NX$" for "Nnn-ten-dough." (bad joke, stolen)

I would guess that it still won't be as beefy as the XB1 or the PS4 and I am sure it will have another gimmick to it.

I enjoyed my Wii for what it was for a short time but when gaming time got limited it was the first to be cast away and maybe when the new Zelda comes out I will think about a WiiU but even then it would have to be cheap.

No idea if these reports from Digitimes are accurate or not, but they're being reported here as if they are substantive. Who knows...

It would be cool if we had a new Nintendo console by Fall 2016.

20 million in the first year is way too optimistic.

----

"Digitimes have reported that Nintendo hope to ship 20 million NX units in the first year. In comparison, the shipment volume of the Wii U is estimated to be 2 million units in 2015.

"Seeing as the Wii U has shipped just shy of 10 million units globally to date, the target seems to be a very optimistic one.

"Digitimes continue to report that Nintendo’s new console hardware, which is planned to launch in 2016, will begin pilot production in October 2015. The consoles will be manufactured by Foxconn Electronics, with rival firm Pegatron Technology hoping to snatch some of the orders.

"Mass production, it is understood, is due to start in May or June 2016."

I'm really interested to see what the console will be in terms of concept and power.

If Nintendo can deliver a console that could do 1080p/60 with ease, that could position them really well as a lead console for third party development.

Nintendo has to get third parties on board in a major way or they will fail again.

Of course I'm hoping for 4k or even 1440p output. But I know that's a pipe dream.

I'd love for this to become a three-man race again. Going back and forth with MS vs. Sony is getting a little tiresome. I didn't grow up Nintendo, never owned a Nintendo console, and don't have all that much affection for the brand, but I honestly hope Nintendo knocks it out of the park with the NX (but not in a Wii/casual kind of way).

"Nintendo in March announced its plan of releasing Nintendo NX in 2016 and has started visiting its supply chain partners recently. The orders are expected to be finalized in February or March 2016 and mass production will start in May or June 2016, while the console's official launch may take place around July, the sources said."

I'm not sure why they're saying "Nintendo announced its plan of releasing NX in 2016" when, unless I'm demented, that never happened.

July seems too early. The holidays would be more likely, if even 2016 is true.

Yeah I thought they announced that weren't talking about it until 2016. Digitimes are probably way off on this one.
