Rise of the Tomb Raider announced for PC (Early 2016) and PS4 (Holiday 2016)

Is it suddenly not a good game, because you're playing it a year later? People are weird.

That is ALL too common my friend. Not just that, but because a game (or movie) doesn't have HD or the best graphics doesn't mean it's not a great game. My god, when I first saw Star Wars A New Hope in the theaters in the 70's, I was blown away, and the movie IS AMAZING even today when I watch it in the original glory.

Time goes by, but that doesn't make the game (or movie) any less of a game than it is now. But gamers seem to be a pretty finicky bunch.

I will still be getting the definitive version on day one (Xbox One).

Yup. I don’t know what version people want to call it but I don’t have patience to wait months or a year after the initial release on Xbox. There are only two games I’m looking forward to this holiday season and that’s Halo and Tomb Raider so it looks like I’ll finally be putting in significant gaming time on my Xbox. Well, that’s all dependent on whether or not I can pull myself away from Destiny which I have for the PS4.

I played the last one on PC but more than likely will just get it on Xbox unless there is a super sale for the PC version by the time I get to it. My PC is still decent but at the beginning of console gens I stick with those then update my PC towards the end and focus on that, then back to console etc.

I spent an hour of my life trying to explain to a handful of XBox fanboys that this would happen. Vindicatioooon!

Well most of us knew it wasn't really exclusive, a year wait for PS4 is longer than I thought, I figured it'd be about 6 months but at least now it's officially announced.

I really don't get how any of this was handled, first of all there was no reason for it to be exclusive to any platform, the series just started to make a big comeback so they decided to go with timed exclusivity on Xbox when the series has ALWAYS sold better on Playstation? And now they announce that it's coming to PC and PS4 which most of us knew it would but they announce it months before the game even ships on the X1? what's the point of the exclusivity then? it won't sway many people to buy an X1 if they don't already have one now that they know for sure that they can wait a while and play it on something they already have. Not only that but a year later I'm guessing the PS4 version will probably have some DLC or something included to make up for the wait. This whole thing seems like one bad decision after another.

This is nothing new, though.

The reason it is exclusive is because MS is funding. If, like you say, the year wait is no big deal, then Square Enix made a great business decision. Which isn't something they do very often.

Incoming,

Xbox fans ''its never been that great a series anyways and this game only looks alright. Totally didn't gloat when it was announced as a Xbox Holiday exclusive and definetly didn't say it would never appears on PS4...''

PS Fans ''ALWAYS knew SE would do the right thing and bring TR back home!!! Totally wasn't upset when its was announced as a Xbox Holiday exclusive and didn't wish death on SE or cry myself to sleep...''

We knew this was going to happen. Hopefully we can have civil discussion here without this turning into a vs thread.
Will this happen? Probably not.

That's a nice thought. By the way, welcome to the Internet. It doesn't quite work like that here, but you'll get that optimism beat out of you shortly.

So ps4 owners have to wait over a year? Wonder why the PC version is getting such an early release by comparison?

No one invited me to the planning meetings, but I would think you'd have to put PC first, since a PS4 release in spring 2016 would make no sense. So, PC first, then focus on PS4. You might shoot for a July or August date, but why not aim for the holiday season like everyone else and their grandmother.

Most articles over at IGN have between 50 and 300 comments. The article about this announcement has almost 9,000 comments.

Great business decision? hardly, the marketing won't be there like it would be for a game that was releasing on multiple platforms at once. The hardcore TR fans will buy it but it's not like there is going to be any real hype to go along with it a year from launch so that's going to hurt a bit. This game would be happening regardless of MS funding, there is no way they sell as many copies as they did with the last game (granted it was on 5 or so platforms) and not make a sequel. It may have been an attractive offer by MS to Square Enix that got them to bite but I really do think it was short sighted. Also if I were MS I wouldn't have allowed this announcement to take place until January or so, assuming they had some kind of control. We all knew it was timed but making it official like this so early seems to undermine the point of their deal.

Yeah. Only .2% of it is actual discussion.

EDIT:
Just check the IGN page....that percentage I came up with might even be a little too generous.
:meh:

Yeah, I agree with that. It does undermine the value of a timed deal, if S-E can say when, specifically, it will be arriving on other platforms. It would be to MS's advantage to have that remain vague and unspecified. People would be more likely to buy an Xbox if they weren't sure when, if ever, the game was going elsewhere. I assumed MS's deal prohibited talking about that, at least until after the deal expired.

I wonder why this was announced now. Did something change?

i think everyone knew it would come to PS4.. but everyone thought 6 months max.. a full year is huge length of time, people with both consoles who were thinking of waiting cause PS4 would have better performance probably wont now

PC coming early 2016 is nice though, i might double dip depending on what visual improvement there might be and the 60fps

Oh no doubt but some here tried saying it wouldn't.
No reason for multiplatform gamers to get it on Xbox now with better versions coming.

I didn't think 6 months; neither did menace and some others around here. 6 months was probably the average or most popular guess, though.

It may be a function of age, but a year doesn't seem that long to me. There are plenty of other games to play in the meantime, and in a year, it's still going to be the same game, maybe with a few extra bells and whistles. I don't understand this attitude -- is everything outdated in a year, planned obsolesence, games as cell phones or something? I wouldn't have any problem waiting for it on PS4, if that's what I wanted to do (still haven't decided).

I wouldn't wait in order to get a version with better performance, though. For me, it would just be a matter of controller preference, console familiarity/preference, and timing. Sounds like the Xbox version is going to be 1080p, presumably tuned pretty well.

Xbox owners get this later this year. And then in March Uncharted 4 comes to the PS4. Nice spacing.:hehe:

Rofl! Omg! I never read the comments on IGN, but boy-o-boy, they are a passionate lot.

Year-long beta test on Xbox One confirmed!

Because better versions are coming.
Why would you still?

 Seriously?

Might as well just wait for many third party AAA games to have their inevitable "GOTY editions" then. You do that right? You don't buy any third party AAA games within six months after they release right?

Heck, scratch that. Let's just wait until next gen (PS5/Next Xbox) when the games will get remastered! An even better idea!

"Console exclusive for one full year" will help Holiday Xbox sales far more than simply "Holiday 2015 exclusive".

Not sure why MS didn't just say the former at last year's Gamescom. Would have been far more honest, less confusing, and still attention grabbing.

The average person wouldn't have known it was timed exclusive if they didn't say anything.

Not sure if I understand. They have to somehow communicate the deal to people/potential buyers or else the deal would be worthless. "Holiday 2015 exclusive" sounds like only a few months -- especially when other Xbox games get "exclusive" and/or "only on xbox" labels.

The last Tomb Raider release was multiplatform so MS just saying "The Rise of The Tomb Raider... coming to Xbox" would have simply made people think that it was coming to the PS4 at the same time too (and that MS simply had a marketing deal).
