State of PlayStation Studios

While it doesnā€™t have a flawless record, itā€™s fair to say that most PlayStation Studios releases are of a high quality. Many of the companyā€™s games secure strong Metacritic ratings, and in an interview with Barronā€™s, bigwig Eric Lempel admitted that management is humbled by the gamesā€™ critical receptions. However, he hinted that a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to ensure such success.

ā€œIt comes down to how weā€™re managing the studios and each individual title,ā€ he said of the secret to the organisationā€™s impressive record. ā€œItā€™s our focus on quality. Thatā€™s whatā€™s most important. It represents PlayStation. Weā€™re humbled by how good these titles are. In some cases, behind the scenes, we will do a lot to make sure that the studios have what they need to put out a quality title.ā€

While that's true for the most part I think Horizon FW had some tech issues it shouldn't have launched with as does Spider-Man 2 apparently. All games are buggy these days but these types of things don't usually happy with big Sony first party games.

I haven't even started playing SM2 yet, mostly because my playtime is limited these days and I'm really enjoying BG3, thankfully that'll give insomniac time to fix the bugs but no matter who the publisher is games shouldn't be released when there are technical issues that can be fixed within a few weeks/months. Delay the games and get the right, you only have one chance to make a first impression. If the story sucks like H:FW that's a different topic altogether lol.

Just goes to show that even talented dev studios like these are not 100% bug free.

It's pretty clear changes are happening due to the Activision deal. Handled poorly by Ryan and now concerns they were leading teams down a bad path.

Sucks for all those who have lost a job they shouldn't really be losing.

How did he handle it poorly? lol he did what any responsible person in his position would do, he did what he could to try to stop a competitor from buying a company that gets sony a huge amount of money. After that didn't work he still got COD on the console for 10 years guaranteed now not just Phil's word lol.

Most of Activision's other console-based IP aren't a huge deal and if Xbox makes them exclusive any value that they have diminishes considerably. You guys kept talking about it as if he was the one who sued to stop it, that was not the case at all. it was the regulatory bodies of the countries involved that did that. He had no real power in any of that but when asked yes he did his best to try to stop it but it was out of his hands.

I'm glad they seem to be backing off of the GAAS focus that he seemingly pushed, if that's why he's leaving I'm glad to be rid of him. I do think he should be given credit for launching a console during a pandemic, getting a large number of games released in the first two years and keeping the momentum from the PS4 going even after all of the challenges going on in the world today. He did a lot better than his counterpart who had a lot more freedom and money to play with.

He lied to his bosses saying it wouldn't cause any issues then flew around the world telling regulators it would possibly kill them and end big budget SP games from them.
Refused to negotiate with MS meaning Sony will no likely lose everything but cod when MS originally was happy to commit to everything for 10 years.

He could have had cod on PS+ which is now gone.

He f***ed up through arrogance.

Well I don't really agree with the COD on Plus part mainly because I don't think Sony would have been willing to pay the needed price.

IG's potential pipeline in the coming few years

Marvel: Which character do you guys want to make a game for ?

Iā€™d say venom is the most likely, after the Wolverine. I feel daredevil should go to someone else, like naughty dog, or just include him in a different game, like a quick mission cameoā€¦ to gauge fans and see if works.

Does Playstation's first party have any confirmed 2024 games? I can't think of any.

You don't know that, though.

Firesprite founders have 'abandoned' the company.
Sometimes when a successful indie/3rd-party gets bought out the founding members tend to take the money and dip out. Sometimes theyā€™ll retire, or theyā€™ll start something new, usually another studio. Circle of life yo!

I love how you guys make everything personal, he did his job! Phil wasn't going to commit to every Activision game being on PlayStation in writing and you know it. Phil lies through his teeth regularly.

BTW putting COD on PS+ they would have had to pay MS for it, it wasn't for free lol and it would have been far more money than they would have or even could have paid.
