The 2017 NFL Season Thread

As far as the rest goes, the previous point stands. Throw out all the numbers you want, but when Brady was out the Patriots did just fine. He’s great, but the team makes him a better player.

Okay, and with Wentz out Foles did just fine tonight but nobody in their right mind thinks Foles is as good as Wentz. Tonight was simply a failure of the defense for the Pats. Brady carried them the last few Super Bowls. The defense won them the first 3 Super Bowls i'll give you that. Brady won them the last 2. That's all there is to it.

Not sure where you're getting that the Pats are a great team. They're a well coached team with a lot of good players but as a whole they're not historically great like they were during their first run. 13-3 means nothing when your defense is swiss cheese. They gave up 40 twice this year. Opening night and tonight and they lost both times. Good riddance to Patricia.

Not sure i'd call Brady's offensive line great either. If you watched every Pats game you'd know they aren't always great. In all their losses it's usually because the line doesn't hold up. Plenty of QBs have a better line and they don't put up the numbers Brady has. Go back the Giants Super Bowls, they crushed Brady and yet Brady still found a way to leave the field with the lead. He's picked apart some of the best defenses and put an end to potential dynasties. Rams and Seahawks.

Yup, i agree. It's like they changed the rule overnight though because of the backlash. NFL is so reactionary. Dez Bryant's catch called a no catch years ago was a terrible call. Fix the rule and stick to it.

At the time i though Dezs' should have been a catch. Consistency is most desired but there will always be some subjectivity while humans make a decision and the two tonight were tough. If it were the same refs making the call that it was fro Dezs' and James' i would see that would make people mad.

As bad as the Pats defense was i'll give the Eagles credit though. They have a good offense. Philly should be the favorite next year. I definitely would have been more scared going in if Wentz was at QB. Who knows where the Pats go from here. Gronk is supposedly considering retirement and Edelman coming off injury isn't getting any younger. They'll be in the hunt as long as they got TB12 but who knows.

Ditto for Rodgers, and a few others.

Thanks for this. That’s what I’ve been saying forever. Their offensive line is incredibly talented and gives him a ton of time, Belicheck is a football genius, he has 6’ 5” Neanderthal Gronk to throw to down the middle all the time, and a they have a great offensive coordinator.

He’s a great player, and mentally tough. But the entire ‘machine’ makes Brady better than he is. On any other team there is no way in Hell he puts up anywhere near the numbers he’s put up.

You put Rogers in the Manning camp or the Brady camp? I always thought Rogers was one of the most talented QBs of the modern era.

I'm so glad the Pats lost, I really was rooting against them more than for the Eagles but I'm happy with how it turned out and glad that a city who never had a SB win finally got one.

Didn’t you read the ESPN article? Brady won that argument, and sold Kraft on him still being the QB for the next few years. Belichick didn’t want that, and was trying to prepare for the future, but in the end Brady wins, and Garroppolo gets traded. Good for him, he’ll be better off.

Look what happened to Dallas when Elliott got suspended, or Green Bay when Rodgers got hurt.

If Brady had gotten hurt and missed this season, and Garrappalo hadn’t been traded, I’d bet the Pats would still have made it to the SB. Their team is just that good.

And Brady sure as sh*t doesn’t get hit that often. The Offensive line gives him far more time and protection than any other QB in football. Most of the teams that beat them did so by hitting him often. It throws off his game, it just doesn’t happen very often because the O line is too solid.

All I’m saying is too much credit goes to Brady, and not enough to the supporting cast.

I couldn't agree more!

I hate Brady as much as the next non-Pats fan. But to call him anything other than great is insane. The guy had 400+ yards at the end of the 3rd quarter, against a pretty good defense.
Nearly pulled it out with all kinds of pressure in his face on that last drive.

Not a Pats or Brady fan but look @ all the superbowl appearances. Every team has offensive weapons and it is Brady that makes them look great not the other way around. Other then maybe Gronk and of course Brady what players from the Pats will make the hall of fame? I understand Belichick's role in the bigger picture but it was Brady that stole the superbowl from Atlanta last year. The title of G.O.A.T. has to be Brady's even if Roger's could have had the same success in New England.

If Brady was picked by any other team say like the Detroit Lions he could have been ruined and a nobody crackhead after his 2nd year.

I do think he has elevated some pretty random WRs that wouldn't have done anything elsewhere like Hogan but Moss/Welker/Cooks/Amendola were all guys who had success before coming to New England.

And besides look at some like Dan Marino who I don't think played with any Hall of Fame WRs, TEs, or RBs and put up record numbers. At least Brady had a couple. Great QBs always elevate their WRs.

I give the GOAT title to Aaron Rodgers. He drags them to being competitive with lousy defenses and often no running game.

And the Pats division basically sucks every year, so they play a ton of games against mediocre teams. It all but ensures a bye and homefield advantage during the playoffs, which is an easier road to the SB.

I don’t know if Rodgers is the greatest, but obviously the team doesn’t function well without him.

Again, I’m not saying Brady’s not a great player. It’s just that his stats are completely inflated by his ‘supporting cast.’ Moreso than most other teams. He’d probably still end up a Hall of Famer, but not with the numbers he has now.

It’s one of those rare instances where the machine has great parts all around, they have mediocre opponents most of the season, and they play in a time where QBs are more protected by the rules (and additionally with his O line).

Offensive line play is way down across the board and defensive linemen are so much more athletic now. To balance that, officials seem to be much more reluctant to call holding, so much so that if Harvey Weinstein had been a lineman and not a director, he'd be a Pro Bowler.
