Until Dawn..1.5?

I think he saw his son play it.
Or so he says... and I'm not saying he didn't, but I do question the duration at which he did.

If he's skeptical, or anyone for that matter, rent it. Nothing to lose from that.

That's what he recommended, too -- a rental.

I'm not a fan of renting games, personally, unless you're doing it as a sort of demo (in which case it's easier to just watch a Youtube or Twitch stream, I would think). I would take a couple of weeks with this game, so at Redbox fees, that wouldn't make any sense. Plus you've got the cost/inconvenience of travelling to pick it up, then doing the same to drop it off. Also, if you're renting, you can't replay the game if you feel like it (unless you want to pay again), and there's no ability to sell it to recoup some of your costs. I'd rather wait for a price drop to $30 or $40.

I recommend a rental only if you are skeptical and not because I believe you may find it to be a bad game. I think that's the difference here.

His belief is that the game is flawed, and this is where you must determine whether it is just an opinion or just plain ol' misleading vs fact. But if you buy his bargain, then a rental would be just enough time to make this decision up for yourself since, as he put it, it is very short lived. After all, he has seen his son play even though he clearly doesn't prefer the genre. Again, I'm not saying he didn't, but based on his description, I do question the duration at which he indulged.

Go into it with an open mind and make that decision for yourself. That is all I am saying.

But the teeth look bad most of the time...
But yeah plenty of times the game looks great.

RT have nearly finished their play through..

that reveal sucked big time
Yeah the teeth are overly white, but I don't mind too much since most actors and actresses have overly white teeth in movies.

And I have just now finished the game and...
Surprisingly, everyone but the psycho douche survived. Surviving really just takes knowing your teen horror scenarios. Lol

Personally, I'd rather you talk to us about your experience of the game, vs. give us advice about what to do or argue with Val. I think most people here can make up their own minds, and questioning/debating Val rarely goes anywhere, except in a circle.

What I'd find more interesting is your experience playing the game -- whether you enjoyed it or not, how far into it you are, what you liked about it or didn't like, strengths and weaknesses, whether you thought it was worth $60, etc.

I have some semi-serious complaints about this game. I was kind of disappointed that literally my entire cast survived until the end despite the fact that I messed up quite a bit. Staying alive was just too easy. There was maybe one death trigger that may have got me, but it was thwarted easily because I already saw the death scene back during E3 gameplay and knew what to do. It was just too easy. No real surprise deaths nor much of difficulty surviving at all. And now going through the game again to try and get everyone killed is turning out to be actually harder than keeping them alive, and that frustrates me. This game shouldn't be a chore when getting yourself killed. It should be the other way around. Not to mention there are two people are guaranteed to make it to the very end regardless of what they face and what you do to get them killed. These two have "plot armor/god mode enabled" until the very, very, very end. For a game being about consequences and death, there is not much of that. The game still has a very forced linear path for the story that cannot be interrupted, altered, or ended early. And we already have very little control over our characters as is. This isn't how you make me fear death. Jump scares alone will not do. The game was and is still fun but still very disappointing all the same. It's not a true return to horror.

If you are not into these types of games, the very same way some people may not be into shooters, racers, arcade fighters, so on and so forth, you may go into the game thinking that it is your typical genre, and therefore detach yourself from the core of its gameplay before it has started. This may lead to half-assing everything just to say you played it.

In Until Dawn, the plot picks up rather quickly, and your choices DO MATTER, and sometimes you may not even know if you've made the correct choice until you witness it's outcome. Not every single choice you make is a butterfly effect, however. But those that are, you will lose count. It is just that many, and those butterfly effects can and will flip the plot on you.

Gradually, you will be worked into the plot, so you're not just thrown to the wolves when you are finally knee deep in the crap. Think of it as a crash course, and that is all i will say on that otherwise I'll be giving it away. :)

The game can be big or small. That is all i will say.

I have finished the game. It took about 8 1\2 to 9 hrs with me both rushing some parts and taking my time in others. My outcome was......i was disappointed in myself. I am liking my wife's results far better right now. Would i play it again? Absolutely since the both of us still haven't gone everywhere.

Personally, the game gets an 8.5 on my scale, and that is soley due to plot alone, but that is a preference issue. Perhaps i am still feeling some type of way about my results. So take that as you will.

Is it worth $60? From my experience, let's just say i am not regreting a single dime. But if you just have to play with another person online, your view may reflect on this.

Thanks. I enjoy story-driven games that do choice & consequence well, so although I don't typically like horror games, I'm pretty sure I'll like this one, as long I remember it's supposed to be a B movie atmosphere.

Kassen's complaints notwithstanding, most of what I've heard about the game has been very encouraging. Looking forward to eventually picking it up. Someone mentioned that it would be a great promotion for $40 around Halloween. I agree.

One important note I forgot to mention earlier. Adjust your settings accordingly. This was a tremendous help.

This kind of detail is absolutely everywhere in every corner of the game. It's mindblowing. Even 3D teeth with loads of shaders.

Yeah, it looks amazing but for the teeth, and more importantly, the eyes. It just breaks the immersion for me. I got over it but it's super creepy. Lots of nice asses too.

Honestly, It barely qualifies as horror, Imo. Much more suspense/thriller to my reckoning.

I believe we are in the waning stages and it has definitely moved closer to horror. But yeah, most of the game prior is suspense/thriller/asses. :hehe::txbsmile:

Again, I don't want to ruin it for anyone that is looking to give this game a shot. But this post makes me wonder if you've even seen the game being played.

You are entitled to your opinion....when there is an opinion to be had. But where facts lie is where it becomes debatable. If you are skeptical, rent the game, and go into it with an open mind. That's my best advice to you.
The facts are its a short game and everybody is entitled to there own opinion and in my and my sons opinion(the one I bought it for) The game isn't worth $65 nor worth playing over and over.
Never once did I say it was a bad game.Don't be hurt that our feelings on the game differ from yours to the point that you question my honesty.

I ordered Until Dawn from Amazon the other day. Should be here tomorrow. Looking forward to playing it as i'm a big fan of horror games. Not sure it's worth the $60 like others have said, but oh well. I'll play it long enough to get the platinum and that takes around 15 hours.

Calling it a short game is not a fact, it is an opinion. My opinion is the game is a very LONG well thought out story with depth, plot, character development, backstory, and twists. 9 hours in and we are not finished. To me that is a long game. I've played a ton of games that were 2-3 hour romps.

And this of ALL my story-driven games that BEGS to be played over because unlike most story-driven games this one has more branching forks and things you won't see in 1 playthrough.

This is one of the few full-price games that I have purchased in the past couple years that I felt was totally worth the sticker price.

Keep bashing it all you want Val, I will counter it every time with praise because it deserves it.

...I said its short and I will continue to say its short.

Not in this thread. You've made your point -- in fact, you've made it a dozen times. We get it. Continuing to repeat the same negative opinion, over and over, is annoying (and you didn't even play the game yourself). You've said your piece. That's enough. I need you to drop it.

I'm going to delete your post, so Oblong doesn't feel the urge to reply, and then you don't feel the urge to reply back to him, etc.

I suppose some of this might be considered spoilery, so avoid if you want to keep yourself pure.

It's so hands off it's hands off lol. This is something the Kinect camera would be useful for. You can't cheat then.

Just finished my first playthrough. Great game. I jumped a few times. Mike and Sam were awesome characters, the rest were okay. Lots of tense moments and plot twists. One thing that confused me though. My game must have glitched or something. I saw a character die and then 3 chapters later there he was alive.. Looking forward to playing it again and making different choices. Plenty of replay value.

We finally finished our first playthrough this weekend. Quality from start to finish and no abrupt/confusing endings. We finished with only 3 survivors so this absolutely merits another playthrough. This is going to be our yearly Halloween game to play. I think we finished at 10 hours and it in no way felt "short" and the replay value is absolutely there. Ranks as one of my Top 5 PS4 experiences since launch. (Andy, you liked Rapture like me so you are going to LOVE this one - it's got so much more going for it.)

TDBanks, if the character you are speaking of is
Josh
, then you missed a plot-critical revelation in the game.

No, it wasn't him. I saw the guy get killed, like actually killed and then he was back 3 chapters later. What the hell? I know sometimes you think a character is going to die and they don't but i know he died. It didn't make sense. Something had to have glitched up. Maybe i didn't quit out properly when i stopped playing or something.
It was Matt. I chose to save Emily instead of jumping from the radio tower as it was falling which leads to his death. Then he gets a hook through his throat. He definitely died, lol.

From interview with Shu:

You had Until Dawn come out recently. It seemed to come out at quite a quiet time. How did it go down?

Shuhei Yoshida: We're super happy with the reactions from people, especially people who are streaming or posting videos on YouTube. It's super fun to watch other people play, even after you've finished the game, because other people make different choices. We can say it's a sleeper hit. Once it's recognised, originating with consumers, the marketing department can continue to support the title through Christmas with some creative ideas. I'm very happy with how the game was received. People have asked me why it wasn't marketed as much as other titles. It's a decision made by marketing departments in each region. Because of the focus on this Christmas time-frame, to really support the big third-party titles like Destiny and these titles, they didn't see the need to push Until Dawn that much from the platform marketing standpoint. I think everybody was caught by surprise by the positive reaction. That's a really great thing for the future of the interactive drama genre. We're a big fan of this genre. These games can talk to a broader audience. You don't have to be good at playing games. You can even just watch your friend play the game. We believe this interactive drama genre can help expand the audience for console games.

Watched this today. Pretty cool, i like that developers have been putting the actual voice actors into the game. They did this with Uncharted and Heavy Rain as well i believe. Hayden is hot and Sam in those yoga pants. :surprise:

I like what one of the actresses said about how unique the characters are. I've always appreciated good characters, and it seems like that's one of the game's strengths.

Got the platinum trophy earlier. Easy trophy list and a great game. $60 well spent in my book, since i'm obsessed with trophy hunting, lol. No though, the game is worth the price of admission if you like games like these.

Just started this game the other day. Played for 1-2 hours so far and loving it. Some good jump scare moments and the atmosphere is very good. Also trying really hard for Mike to bang Jess. Hope it happens the tension is killing me.

PlayStation LifeStyle: How is Until Dawn doing sales wise? Is it performing as expected? Better? We saw it do well in sales data, which a lot of people were surprised with.

It’s definitely surpassed expectations. I think that’s already been stated in other interviews, and reports of significant retail outlets running out of stock during the first weeks after release kind of supports that.

As for what’s next from Supermassive Games, they’re already working on something that builds on what they did with Until Dawn:

PSLS: What should we expect from Supermassive next? Any new games in the same genre or completely different/new projects? Is Until Dawn 2 being considered at all or is it too early?

I think that you should expect the team to build on what we’ve done with Until Dawn, whether it’s in horror or in other genres. We’re already working on one thing that does that, whilst exploring other avenues for our other teams in anticipation of them finishing their current projects. We do talk internally about what Until Dawn 2 could be, as it clearly can’t be a sequel in the traditional sense, with the same characters facing the same threat, not least of which because in different stories some or all of them are already dead! We’ve investigated other ways we could do Until Dawn 2 but it probably is a little early to be discussing that.

Well, started the game Saturday night and finished her up Sunday night on a gaming binge. I haven't played a game in 2 sittings to complete it like that in two days in ages.

Loved the game. I thoroughly enjoyed most of the characters, and I think they played into their part really well. I love Chris' humor, I liked Sam's hot bod (as well as Jessica's...and even Ashley's...and even Em...hell, I would have nailed all the chicks). My least favorite character was probably Matt. I think my favorite character might have actually been Jessica or the therapist (who I remember being in the show Prison Break). Outside of some of their more juvenile comments (tweet this, hashtag that, cell phone this), I found the story well done and I found each character to be believable.

Graphically, best game I have played on a console, bar none. I mean, there are so many little things I noticed, I can't imagine if I saw the things that I missed! Reflections, animations, textures, lip movement, hair, eyes, teeth...all the best I have seen yet. Sometimes It these character's facial expressions, eye detail, teeth detail, animations are so real. Sometimes it seems like they just actually made the movie with those actors, then had a computer just make them look like CGI. Some of it was so real. I know it is linear and QTE, so of course they can make it look that good, but damn..me likey. Even the little things like the character moving an object from their right hand to their left hand so that they can open a door with their predominant hand, and then back into their right hand once the door is opened. Love it. Oh, and LOTS OF NICE ASS...hubba hubba. That puts a challenge up against Lara's booty as well as Agent 45's from SOCOM 4. Hubba Hubba.

The game length was long enough for me. Yes, there is replay there for those who want to do the same story in a different way multiple times (I don't want to), and you can go back and get all the Totems and clues if you want (I don't want to). Or like Oblong says, some people dig that and will find value in that. Other's like Val might not. I really can't see multiplayer fitting into this tacked on. It would just be another me too tack on like Uncharted or Tomb Raider add-ons. Same s***, different game and the population would be dead in a heart beat. For me, the value was great, as I rented the game for $3 from Redbox. Now, I normally do NOT rent games (first time I have rented a game in years and years...I prefer to give the developer my money), but with some many games coming up, and my frothing at the mouth to play it quickly (after reading what others have said here about it), I couldn't resist. They will get my money on their next game. They won't get $60 from me, but I would have bought this game for $30.00. I didn't time it, but I probably spent about 9-10 hours on this.

Gameplay, meh. It's 100% QTE and decision making with the ability to walk your character around. I knew that going in, so it is all good. Just nothing to write home about. I don't like that failing at a QTE affected my Butterflies. I get the decisions, but there were times where I wanted to have the story go in a certain direction and I didn't want my character to die, and then they did because I don't have the buttons memorized on my PS4 controller. Then when I sucked that bad at QTE, it made trying to climb up rocks a BITCH because I fell down every second. I finally just memorized the QTE's...though sometimes it did change them on me.

I must say, I had no idea where the game was going. I assumed at the start it was going to be a realistic game (as far as story goes), but turned to fictional. Which is totally cool too, cuz I enjoyed it.

Can't say much more without spoilers, other than I recommend this game HIGHLY. Even though Andy is a bit hesitant (and doesn't care to rent games just like me), I think you will enjoy the game once you get past some of the juvenile comments. I don't do numbers anymore for my personal ratings. I pretty much have DO NOT PLAY, PLAY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND PLAY, and this is indeed highly recommended for those who enjoy story games.
