Diverse Windows Mixed Reality Headset designs
Last year at Computex, Terry Myerson and Alex Kipman invited partners to join us in building devices that merge physical and virtual realities. Since then we have seen Windows Mixed Reality Headsets from partners like Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.

At the show this year, we are able to show off the great new designs from these partners making mixed reality available for everyone later this year. These headsets, coming to market this holiday, use Microsoft’s platform to enable a single and consistent user interface, standardized inputs, and a universal app platform for developers.

HP Windows Mixed Reality headset

During Alex Kipman’s Build keynote, we announced that Windows Mixed Reality dev kits from Acer and HP are now available for pre-order through the Microsoft Store for developers in the US (Acer, HP) and Canada (Acer, HP). The response to these dev kits has been positive and we look forward to seeing all the great content that our development ecosystem will create.

Not super stoked about strapping something on my head but the ASUS one looks all kinds of Deus Ex cool. Looks like many are taking inspiration from the Sony design which is supposedly the most comfortable, correct? My god man, that Acer one is ugly as sin tho and cheap looking af. My guess is that these will work with Scorpio as well BUT Microsoft could also be waiting for the true wireless units to come. I'd rather wear a battery backpack to power this than have 18 wires hooked up. Wonder how much time/exposure MS will give to VR at E3...

That's the first time I've actually seen the ASUS and the Dell head units. All of the others look a bit similar, but these two look very different. I hope that the Microsoft strategy works. Affordable is great, but we need to know the quality of the experience.

I was wondering if we'd see a headset that worked with both Oculus or Vive and WinMR, but then I realized that they don't allow competing partner companies to make their headsets, which just might be their biggest mistake.

Also, Samsung just announced a display for VR that's 3X the resolution of Vive or Rift. Exciting, right? Turns out this will likely be the replacement display for both Oculus and Vive. What? That's right, Samsung makes the display for both current launch models of Rift and Vive. Good thing there is competition in PSVR, right? Well, it turns out that PSVR ALSO uses a Samsung display! Crazy, right? Combine that with Gear VR, and it's easy to see that Samsung has been silently ruling VR well ahead of anyone else for a while now, even if this hasn't been what the media has been telling us.

The more I see about Microsoft bringing all these other companies into the fold, the more I like their approach. Microsoft's main strength has always setting up competition for hardware makers, while owning the underlying software. It's good to see that the new leadership still gets that. They really get the economics of competition. Once they remodel their Hololens so that it's affordable and the FoV is increased to 90°+, they stand to make a "Surface Pro of Mixed Reality", and again, become the "How To" guys of their own little competition.

your right but I can get the quote from the developers them self. You have to give me a chance to get it.
Oh, no worries on that. I believe the story. I was just talking about their facebook page. It seems they are trying to make it come across as official. I see some comments where people are asking questions like they think it is the Xbox team.

pity all that power is only going to be used for up-rezing X1 games.

such a waste to not have exclusive Scorpio games.

They should call it Scorpio and have a giant Scorpion in the middle of the box it comes in.

Why do they have 4k on it? Seems a bit silly?

its like the ps4 have 1080p, um, ok?

That's why I'm not excited about it as of yet. I'm hoping they will change other stance on it in the future like they have with other things in the past.

Once I hear a complaint from a developer that they cannot produce their vision for a game because it has to be compatible with Xbox One the First, then maybe it's of concern. Until that point:

That name to the left is also my Xbox user name, make a friend request to compare my X1 games against yours and then tell me about salt.

More list wars? Lol

If Scorpio looks like a poor value, don't buy. It's just an option for those that want better performing games. There's nothing about the tech that makes it's capable of new experiences not possible on Xbox One.

Pro can offer uprez and more FPS.
Scorpio without exclusives is going to do the same to X1 games.

Such a waste of all that power.
Pro doesn't have exclusives. Scorpio doesn't have exclusives.

Pro offers better performance and graphics over PS4
Scorpio offers better performance and graphics over Xbox One

So it's like PC. I get the same game on lower spec PC's as those with the highest spec PC's.

Windows PC > Scorpio > PS Pro > PS4 > Xbox One S for performance and graphics

So what was your point?

Are you seriously that stupid.

So much power not being used on exclusives is the point.
