Are gamers obsessed with resolution/fps? (Motherboard article)

Totally agree.

Another good exmaple would be Dark Souls. Those horrible FPS dips in Blighttown didn't make it a terrible game. Same as the PC version with its limited graphics, it was still a great game.

*Tips hat

I haven't played DS but heard its very good. I'm tempted to pull the trigger on Steam and give it a go before Dark Souls 2 arrives.

Wow, actually a good post. Agree mostly.

If more people can be more like you, we will not have to close every thread with an open discussions.

Thanks.

Thanks.

If you do pull the trigger ( and I strongly suggest you do), make sure you get that DSfix Mod for better resolutions and a whole host of other settings. It is a Must have for any Dark souls owner.

Resolution and framerate matter, anyone who says they don't are basically lying to themselves for whatever reason. Proof. I am willing to bet not a single person in here would be happy with a PS4 or XBO game running at 800x480 at 15-25fps.

Extreme surely matters as would 1fps and 120x60 res but that is not the discussion here. Does the difference between 30 anf 60fps matter? I'd say no. Proof...ask a gamer to name what the framerate is of any game they are currently playing or have played. I'd be willing to bet 90% or more have no clue.

That's not proof it doesn't matter, that's proof the gamer doesn't know the technical stuff. Give them COD at 30fps then 60fps and they may not be able to tell you what the difference is in name, but they'll tell you there is a difference. It matters because there is a big difference in control input and latency between 30fps and 60fps. It clearly matters to some degree or DICE wouldn't bother shooting for 60fps with BF4 and Activision wouldn't always aim for 60fps with COD series. It clearly matters, or MS wouldn't have made a big deal about the next Halo being 60fps. If it didn't matter then Turn10 wouldn't have busted their asses pushing for 1080p60 locked.

But you're going to the extremes, 15 -20 FPS isn't really playable frame rates, 30FPS is a well recognized number of playability. So why should people care when the game is already at an acceptable level ?

It's more than playable, you guys have been playing at such framerates during PS3/360 era without complaint. GTAIV regularly dipped to such framerates, as did other games…and vast majority of you didn't notice such until Digital Foundry pointed it out to ya. Hell Ryse dips to 16fps a few times and I'm willing to bet 99% of you not once noticed it. You guys played COD at 900x600 at times, vast majority of you didn't notice it until Digital Foundry pointed it out to you. Once it's pointed out and gamers are made aware they care tremendously especially if their platform of choice is the one taking the L.

So because most of you didn't notice such, it's safe to say that they don't really matter then? Or is it safer to say it only matters when your platform of choice is the one that's rated higher. Just like PS3 fans didn't care they had lower performing versions of games, Xbox fans now don't care. Where as last generation Xbox fans routinely reminded those poor PS3 fans how horrible their version is because it runs at 25fps or had a 1200x600 resolution and it looks “hideous” while this generation PS4 fans are pretty much throwing it back in their faces. Which within itself is kind of hilarious given how sure a few posters were prior to the games coming out that XBO versions would be higher resolution/higher framerate.

TL;DR - It totally matters depending on what team you bat for.

I don't think most people would care about 30fps and 60fps. As long as it ran smooth and didn't disrupt basic functions like not stuttering into a huge ass slowdown. Serious dips are what a majority of people have a people (lol, problem) with, but locked 30fps framerate? I don't think as many people tend to lose their minds over it, and let's be honest, with the way some posters here argue, some do indeed lose their proverbial s*** over what amounts to a pretty miniscule thing in the grand scheme of an overall game.

For the record, I didn't care in the 360/PS3 era and don't care now. I suspect most didn't care then either as I rarely saw 30fps/60fps discussions back then and like you said, most had no clue what frame rates the games were then because it didn't matter. I bet there were high profile AAA games that have run at 30fps (or less, I have no clue) that sold millions of copies to people who enjoyed the games and that's all that mattered.

Loads. BF3, GTA , RDR, Gears of war....this list could go on for ages. Even on current gen, Dead Rising 3 is doing just fine with a million sold.

Also, back in the 360/PS3 era people didn't games to be 60FPS, but I'm sure you noticed all the threads about Resolutions ? and them being sub 720P.
