Are gamers obsessed with resolution/fps? (Motherboard article)

It is because people complained that the Xbox One is now better than what MS initially announced. Can share physical games again, no more online always, CPU speed boost etc. If noone cares or posts about anything, would there be improvements? Probably, but not as much as we would like.

I have been saying this all this while. As long as a complain is reasonable, & just, I do not see why we should just stay silent, unless you live in North Korea.

Improvement of many things comes from feedbacks/complains from people.

Sure, although if you actually want to have an effect, you've got to direct your complaints to people who can actually do something. It's not like complaining here on this forum is somehow going to make it back to MS or Sony headquarters.

Well, you have a point hence, I joined official forum when I need my point to get across. Anyway, these days, with the easy access of internet, you do not have to make complains calls, or write letters to the company you are complaining about.

I believe MS/Sony got many of the feedback/complains from articles, threads posted in major websites like IGN, NeoGAF, gamespot Eurogamers, & who knows Union VGS etc.

Everyone here knows that resolution, fps are hot topics in gaming community on the internet. So no reason MS not to know as well.

Anyway, these topics have been well covered by say IGN., & all that need to be said are already covered by posters there My goal is not so much to let MS know my opinion, but explain why certain thing I feel is ok, or not. All for fun sake.

What I find funny are the people who owned a PS3 last gen are now saying the reason they have a PS4 are to play the better versions of games.

Just think about that for a second.

Looking at multiplat sales, it looks like most people used their ps3 for exclusives.

I will ask you a simple question. You watch movies in HD (Say bluray) or standard (say DVD)? Why so?

Now, I do watch movies sometimes in DVD format, when the movie is old & HD is not available. The film matters more than resolution. But when I have the choice of HD, & standard, at same price, why would I wanted to watch in standard def?

games is the same, having higher resolution, better sound system etc are all parts of improving the game experience. Some care some don't. If you do not care, fine, Just because you don't, doesn't means other have to agree with you.

I do not care a lot about sound system, & d not invest in any sound system, but you will not see me go around telling people sound doesn't matter., & they are wasting their money because I can respect that it can matter to some people.
But you get the same emotion from the film whether its in blue ray or DVD. You can't tell me you don't enjoy a game because a tree limb has 15 more leaves on each branch. That doesn't draw an emotional responce. Yes 1080p is the best looking but if you need that to get enjoyment out of a entertainment. I think your missing the point of all forms of entertainment.
Its not how they look, take star wars for example after all the bruhaha of how good the graphics were in episodes 123. The new movies are going back to film taping and other things that were done in the original trilogy, but though as being underachieving in film making by the standards of the day.
Back to my point whether its movies, sports, amusement parks, and yes video games its all about the emotional response the consumer gets from the product.
1 more thing Records have better sound quality than anything digital, how many people have a record player?

There is feedback and then there is being destructive. Gamers are often times just plain out of control and destructive.

Honestly, haven't cared about FPS and resolution for the most part before, and won't do it this gen. Going from CoD to Halo doesn't kill my experience because Halo is less FPS. I do care when the games chugs down to an actual crawl, but I think that's a universal negative that nobody usually wants to deal with. All the talk of FPS and resolution just sort of makes a meh discussion for me.

You tend to have A LOT of fun however, starseeker. A LOT....A LOT of fun. Just sayin....

Exactly. People will always be comparing consoles, regardless of FLOPS, power, hardware, functionality, shape, size, heat levels, noise levels etc.

It is because people complained that the Xbox One is now better than what MS initially announced. Can share physical games again, no more online always, CPU speed boost etc. If noone cares or posts about anything, would there be improvements? Probably, but not as much as we would like.
I think that not always being online has hurt a lot of expectations including some, not a lot, in graphics department.. Once that was cancelled I figured DDG sharing was gone.

I definitely find it harder to enjoy games I find to be ugly. I don't care how awesome the gameplay is, if I have trouble looking at it then i'm not going to enjoy it. Needs to be the full package not half. I'm greedy.

You must compare apple with apple.

Few people will argue we rather have a good game (Gone home), but average visual, than a lousy game (e.g Fighter within) with better visual. That's clear, but that's is not the point of the discussion.

We should be compare about apple vs apple. Why would you wanted to watch the same film in standard when HD is available? When I download a movie say from Netflix, or buy a bluray, I expect them to be in HD, do I. Having movie in HD is an expectation in 2014, if it is not, it will in the next few years. Whether the movie is good or not, is another topic.

I partially feel the same way. If the game is an awesome game like, Baldur's Gate, then generally I care less about the visuals, but imo, and it's only imo, a lot of games today really aren't all that great, and visuals help push a game along and make it more enjoyable.

We can't kid ourselves, if resolution, jaggies, etc were not a big deal, then why the big excitement over a new gen of consoles? Why are the very gamers that claim it means nothing to them running out and dropping another 60 bucks on TR when they already played it before.

It matters.

How about cause of new Ip's, larger player counts, bigger worlds, better animations, better A.I, better physics, new hardware features...etc. Do graphics matter, yes, do people who claim it "Means Nothing" mean that Literally, or because Graphics are way down the list of what they hold important ? I would think the latter.

As for TR. Have you never sold a game and the bought it again a few months later cause you just wanted to lay again ?

Just saying there are many possible reasons why people do or say things. We shouldn't assume the one we think it is, is the correct one.

As a Wii U gamer I really don't understand it at all. For my Graphical "whoring" I go play on my PC. I don't understand the current culture of comparing pixels when I could be having a blast playing Wonderful 101.

I mean the amount of hate on a site like N4G by the minions of Spawn First for instance (MariaHelFutura and that Karam guy), it's just getting poisonous. I find very little fun these days on forums discussing my hobby, they want everything they do not enjoy to "die out". Forgetting that some people do enjoy those things, or maybe not forgetting but wallowing in schadenfreude in an almost offensive level.

I am so sick and tired of the people enjoying my hobby that act as if being a gamer is not a hobby but a thing you are born with. And behave like complete children. From posting Banderas gifs to constantly "dat <x>", including a way of discussing points on forums that is just disrespectful and sarcastic to an extreme.

Oh well, I ranted and I'll now be quiet save for one more thing:

When are we getting our own Wii U section on here :p. Us Nintendo fanboys are usually nicer then Sony fanboys :), so we would be good neighbours :).

This sounds like bs tbh lol. So now people who sold it want to replay it for 60 bucks? and there are many possible reasons why? really? hahahaha.

Who jumped into next gen and spent 500 dollars for bigger uglier worlds and more ugly chars on screen? btw I'd say animation goes to graphics.

I'm glad some people still enjoy Nintendo. I haven't touched a Nintendo system since n64 and even then I didn't play any Mario or Zelda on it. I felt like I grew out of Nintendo by the time I was 16 and I never looked back. Sucks too because I grew up with NES/SNES.

It is a general answer to a specific question. Let me put it this way, if they sold their last gen console and want to replay they have no choice but to pay $60.

I always count animation separate from graphics.

I agree even as a xbox man myself. These games are looking so good these days, but people constantly find a way to dump on their visuals. It's a good time to be a gamer overall in my opinion. Nex-gen consoles have cool stuff coming up, old gen folk like myself got plenty to look forward to, and overall, I just don't have any real complaints to make other than the serious ones like EA/Dice having their game release in the state that it was. I can tell you right now I won't be a happy camper if that happens to Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare but we're talking purely about basic functions that should have been working day one. Those guys need to figure out where to allocate their resources properly next time because it's a bit ridiculous considering how much it's happened. Perhaps it's time Battlefield went pure MP with a campaign added later as DLC.

No, I never wanted to lay with a game.

All jokes aside, I was talking about a game that you currently own, not played and sold and then wanted it again. I have purchased CoD games in the past to play on console with cousins and on pc when playing alone though, but me personally, I wouldn't rebuy a sp game that I just purchased a year ago for just an upgrade in visuals, but that's just me.

Fair enough, but your post didn't imply or specifically say "Owned". All you said was " When they already played it before"

Resolution matters more to me than framerate. Always has. As long as the game is smooth with no V-Sync issues, I'm fine.

I was hoping that jaggies would be a thing of the past. But both consoles still have them and the weird mosaic patterns that appear on fences or other surfaces viewed from afar.

That was a poor article IMO.

Do FPS\RES matter... They kinda do.

I have Crysis 3 on PC whilst I can't run it at max settings\1080p etc, I found it to be a dull, boring game. Yes it was very pretty to look at I mean some of the graphics you get are amazing but they don't make a bad game good, the opposite is true as well they don't made a good game bad.

There are so many different ways for a game to be good, Example: Skyrim on 360 doesn't have the best graphics and suffers with Fps dips at times, yet I enjoyed it and at no point was I thinking AWW! man the FPS dips kill this game for me. I rank Skyrim as one of me top 10 games this gen I have sunk so many hours into it but it wasn't because of res\fps it was because of the world\story and most importantly GAMEPLAY. Gameplay is king. The way a game feels, controls and lures you in is one of the most important aspects I find in gaming.

But can fps\res can make a good game an even better game, YES! Example: Dead Space 2/3 on 360, Visceral did some amazing work on those games, Not only are they very impressive in the graphical department, but it also holds a rock steady frame rate and at no point does it drop and break the immersion I was experiencing. DS2/3 did so many things right it had good graphics, steady frame rate, story and fantastic gameplay.

I have no idea what res Skyrim and DS run at and I don't care the technical aspects aren't important when your playing the game.

I think the reason why so many gamers are up in arms recently over res\fps in games is because of the longevity of the previous gen. 7/8 years we went with no new hardware, after such a long wait there was a pent-up demand for something grander but what was brought to the table was a very little jump in some areas. The big 3 have all chosen different paths, Nintendo with its tablet controller, MS with Kinect and it's one device for everything and Sony brought a games console first and foremost.

Some were expecting something better from MS in the hardware department given their record with XB\XB360 and this is why it's become a big thing, after the previous gen where the differences were almost nonexistent whereas now the differences are very apparent and something that a lot of people weren't expecting me included.

Totally agree.

Another good exmaple would be Dark Souls. Those horrible FPS dips in Blighttown didn't make it a terrible game. Same as the PC version with its limited graphics, it was still a great game.

Wow, actually a good post. Agree mostly.

If more people can be more like you, we will not have to close every thread with an open discussions.

Welcome to the forums and good post. We could use more people around here like you. +1 for using "schadenfreude."

I like Nintendo fans, too, although I don't own a Nintendo console. Nintendo fans have their own official thread, which is stickied at the top of the Multiplatform section. I don't think the traffic would warrant an entirely separate subforum, although ultimately that's Plainview's decision.

Resolution and framerate matter, anyone who says they don't are basically lying to themselves for whatever reason. Proof. I am willing to bet not a single person in here would be happy with a PS4 or XBO game running at 800x480 at 15-25fps.

But you're going to the extremes, 15 -20 FPS isn't really playable frame rates, 30FPS is a well recognized number of playability. So why should people care when the game is already at an acceptable level ?
