The Verge does some PS4/XB1 comparisons and even some 360/XB1 comparisons. Even at the same resolution the XB1 version looks better than 360 thanks to more RAM for textures and a more powerful GPU for better effects.

Gamers should have the option to disable that upscale color/sharpening filter at 1080p.

Jesus christ....what resolution is AC4 running on on the XB1 version???.....that looks noticeably worse than the PS4 version.
Others like Fifa I couldn't see a big difference.

AC4 is confirmed 900p. It's the upscaler sharpness filter that gives it a harsh look. When I buy my own Xbox One I'd like the option to disable that filter.

BF4 turns the sharpness filter off and looks more comparable.

Ouch at that horrible sharpness filter on the XB1.

NOTE: You can disable this filter by forcing your XB1 to always output at 720p.

Man that is nuts!
Looking at the comparison again even the Xbox360 version of AC4 looks more comparable to the PS4 version albeit the PS4 version has better textures/resolution.

The Xb1 version just looks horrible.

I don't think it looks horrible but it would look better with the sharpness filter off.

Great, so I can make my games stop looking like crap by forcing them to look like crap?

That sharpness filter is really starting to look like a bad idea since it seems to do more harm than good.

To my knowledge nobody from Microsoft, or any developer for that matter, has confirmed this effect...or even been questioned about it. I think DF started the thing that its part of the scaler based on a difference between 720 and 1080 outputs of same game, but it doesn't hold consistent across the board. If its a mandatory part of the upscale then how are some games able to avoid it and others not?

Point is, all these sites are taking DF original assumption and putting up new screens to back the same conclusion. I am just saying before the media and everyone jump to incomplete conclusion about some sharpness filter they really should act like news outlets and get some real facts. Talk to Microsoft, talk to developers are find out what is really going on.

I'm not denying the visual disparity between those shots, I am just saying I am sick of media outlets reporting on some fanciful conclusion instead of finding the real facts.

Very interesting look at what exactly the Xbox One upscaler is doing. None of these effects are present when the game is running 720p native non-upscaled.

My observations:
1. sharpening filter
2. contrast filter resulting in crushed black levels and lost detail
3. some form of FXAA

First pic is 1080p upscaled w/ filters. 2nd pic is 1080p upscaled w/o filters. More details at this post.

This is what I was seeing on my X1, Horrid to look at. The textures didn't look right and there was this god-awful shimmering effect in DR3.
I hope MS can sort this out via software updates.

Just run the below 1080p games@720p..
Problem solved :)

A $499.99\£429.99 NEXT GEN console unable to output a game at 1080p natively on my 4 year old TV is unacceptable.

Good question. I'm not following the arguments and screens enough to know. Anyone?

Precisely why I'm in no hurry to get either "next-gen" console and instead took the money I had saved (originally planned on getting both) and put it towards my new ACTUALLY NEXT-GEN PLATFORM, PC.

FFS, it was like the second year of the 360's life when MS added an HDMI port and started upscaling games to 1080p to compete with the PS3 which was delivering games in 1080p (although I'm sure not natively). So that was, what? 6 years ago?

So here we are, 6 years later and a new "next-gen" of consoles is released and NEITHER of them can put out native 1080p games equal in IQ to the "high" settings on a current PC? Hell, I'd even settle for medium settings.

It's been pretty consistent thus far. We know that

1. If you use an ingame/software upscaler to increase the resolution to 1080p/If your game outputs at 1080p, then the hardware scaler will not utilize the sharpening filter. See Ryse and Forza
2. Developers can toggle each of the settings (sharpening filter/lolgamma) on and off. See Battlefield 4.

Looks like s***, and I feel bad for 2/3 of gamers who keep their TVs in torch mode/store mode and have never had their sets calibrated. Or worse people who actually like the "can't see s***" look.

Developers can toggle each of the settings (sharpening filter/lolgamma) on and off. See Battlefield 4.

So it's not "mandatory" or automatically applied to every upscaled game, then.

Pretty much, if you're playing a XBO game that's less than 1080p and the sharpening/lolgamma filter is applied to it when you scale it to 1080p. The developer of said game is to blame just as much as MS for implementing it. The PPAA (post process anti aliasing) is really the only good thing. Not sure what MS' intent was with the lolgamma filter considering the vast majority of console gamers don't really calibrate their TV and as a result most of them have contrast and sharpness cranked up by default.

It never was a mandatory feature. It's an optional feature. However, one forum poster has tried twisting stories to make it sound like it's mandatory.

how does it look noticeably worse?looks darker to me and that's it.....can't even tell the resolution on either.....please tell me where you see the resolution difference in that screen cap.Matter of fact....i'm hard pressed to tell which one is better.

Nobody said the upscaling filters were mandatory on this forum. You are literally making things up, as usual.

Note how every single strawman and false accusation on this forum comes with 0 quotes, links, or anything resembling evidence. It's probably deliberate at this point.

I notice that you cry alot...and have equated being called a sony fanboy to a racial slurr. The proof is in the quote.

See how the Xbox One version looks noticeably "rougher" when compared to the more clean and crisp image of the PS4?
