Controller preference

For me, Xbox one controller by a narrow margin.

But I commend Sony on the DS4 (other than battery life), really impressed with it.

I usually don't even notice the controllers. But having played GTA 5 on both systems back to back, I actually do prefer the DS4. And not because of the gimmicky stuff. The actual overall feel and control.

The DS3 always cramped my hands since it felt too small and light. DS4 is just about perfect.

My aiming sucks on GTAV (XB1) and wonder if its an issue with the deadzone people talk about on the XB1 controller, I have tweaked the sensitivity several times and just cant get a fluid aiming movement on the right thumbstick, can you say if its much or any better on the PS4 ?

I was having issues with the same thing on X1. Even with auto-assist or whatever mechanism that allows you to snap to different targets .

Yeah the "Snap to" targets (L Triggering I believe) is how I have to aim now , never had an issue free aiming in the past though on previous consoles.

The best controllers you'll ever use........

Did you guys ever update your controllers.
What you mean by 'Update your controller'.

Anyway, some comments about the PS4 controller.

The charging cable are way too short. I think its 1.5 metre (or less). Come on Sony, do you have to save a few cents for a cable? Its impossible to play without sitting too close to the TV while charging.

Also, the battery life is pretty poor, about 6 hours in, & one bar left. I just found a way to dim the blue light on the controller, hopefully it improved.

Also the the option & share button are so small & depressed, its hard to press, & you need to press the option button often in some games, like Dragon age.

What's improved is the size. I have about average hands, & it fits me well. The old DS3 & earlier feels like design for women or kids.
The sticks and Triggers (which the insisted to call L2 R2 for tradition) are much improved, mainly by bing concave, something they should have implemented long ago. Also the dual stick has been widened, so you do not have problem knocking your thumbs together anymore.

The transition from X360 to PS4 is pretty smooth, but I still hate the name convention using numbers like. L2, R1 etc What the hell is a R3? Thankfully, usually there are some icons.

There is something wrong with the X1 controller. I don't own the PS4 so can't compare this gen. Really have liked everything about the X1 other than the Halo debacle and my lack of accuracy with the X1 controller. I liked the initial feel and didn't think anything of it until trying to play Halo online. I was far more accurate with the 360 controller and haven't been able to put my finger on it. Maybe it is this deadzone you guys are referring to. Maybe it's the change in the feel. I'm actually looking for a good 3rd party option for FPSs.

I don't think there's as much of a deadzone on the Xbox One controller as people make it out to be. More than likely, people are just used to the 360 controller holding their hand. It was a perfect controller for shooters. The X1 controller takes more time to get used to but it's easy to use once you do.

Yeah I went ahead and got the X1 on a whim. Sorry Playstation (I haven't even held a DS4 to be honest, so basically I'm ignorant and choose to continue being so, lol)

Anyway, as nice as the X1 controller is, I'll agree with a lot of people who thought the 360 controller was perfect.

But then, I imagine I said the same thing about the OG Xbox controller S, and I absolutely voiced my displeasure about the discontinuation of the OG Duke, so maybe it is a "get used to it" thing.

The rumbling triggers are awesome, and I like the rubber texture on the sticks. The bumpers are definitely worse than 360's though.

Oh, and I'll try and remember to actually test out the PS4/DS4 next time in a Best Buy, I might end up with both consoles this gen if it's really more comfortable than I ignorantly assume :D

What you mean by 'Update your controller'.

There are controller firmware updates. They tweak things like deadzone and the like. There was one around the time titanfall came out. There was one for chat adapter etc. And one was supposed to tweak the stick deadzone.

You know what? I literally went from playing GTA 5 Online, seeing a good black friday deal on the X1, going "f*** I want to play GTA5 next gen", and thinking somehow I got even worse at aiming (which is now really bad)

So I think the X1 controller is worse with it's sensitivity. I'm gonna try to play around with the sensitivity options more, but I think it might be the controller is just too aggressive, whether that's physical design or software calibration who knows?

Turns out there is an update for X1 controller.

You need a usb to mini usb cable to do it though. Took me a good rummage around my house to find one that fit.

Anyway, maybe I'm imagining things but I did the update, went to GTA online, and I swear it feels better. More gradual and less twitchy, slower too. Had to go into settings and max out look around sensitivity and bump aiming sensitivity to 3/4 full and it feels pretty good now.

I've always thought GTA games had s***ty aiming response anyway, but I swear the update improved it here. Am I crazy? Is this a placebo effect of me wanting the update to include improved stick calibration? Anyone know the facts about the X1 controller update?

I didn't take note of the original firmware number, but after the update it says 1.1.2228.0 if anyone wants to try it out and tell me if I'm full of s*** or not.

I need to update my controller as well, I have a day one controller and have never updated it. I know there has been at least one update to improve the controller performance. Gotta get me a mini usb.

Yeah, just go to settings > Controllers and Accessories (Or something like that) and with the controller plugged in via USB select Update Controller.

The summary will let you know if there is a update and will tell you what firmware version your controller has.

a USB cable is not provide for X1? Hmmm. Then again, there is no USB cable for 360 as well, but I do not remember ever needing to update.

No, but who doesn't have a bunch of micro USB cables lying around?

The 360 controller didn't get updated firmware. So no, you wouldn't remember needing to.

I didn't think I did. My phone uses micro usb which is different, my old camera has some proprietary thing. Anyway, I spent like half an hour looking around my house for something that used mini usb then gave up, thought about ordering one for a $1.07 off amazon, decided to search some more and found the plug to charge a portable bluetooth speaker thing someone got me that i've never used.

Too many different cables in everything, it's annoying.

It definitely comes with a mini-USB to USB cord.

For people curious about updating the controller, you need a USB to Micro USB cord. Make sure it's one that works with X1 as there's a few different kinds of these cords where the micro part may be slightly different. I know my old Blackberry's charging cord was compatible. But I think my buddy's Samsung phone cord is not.

If you bought the recharging plug and play kit (controller + battery), the cord it comes with is the one to use too.

When you get around to updating your controller, make sure to also plug in your pack in cheapy headset into the controller too. The software update will affect your head set too.

Updating your controller should literally take 2 minutes tops as the progress bar goes 1%, 2%, 3%...... very fast. The file size must be tiny.
