Destiny BETA discussion (Xbox)

The gameplay feels really mediocre, for a shooting game I do not feel it is anything more than average. I guess the appeal for people will be the mmo-like gameplay/story. I agree with what was previously said, the world feels dead, no interaction/physics at all

I wouldnt count on it but it would be nice since you are able to find level 9 and up equipment in the beta

I'm not to concerned about the loot and weapons/armor you get, I'm just hoping at least your characters level will carry through. At least you'll have access to your skills and abilities right outta the shoot at that point. I don't know how keen I'm gonna be to slog through the first few hrs of the game again at the bottom.

Seems to go by quick though judging from the beta though, i am going to start a warlock tonight to see how i like that class

I'm really enjoying the game, but this is my biggest concern as well.

I also sort if miss exploding barrels or environments. It's sort of fun to lure enemies towards them and blow then up and it also provides a bit of an out in tough situations.

It certainly helps with enemy management, not to mention making things more dynamic and believable when you can destroy the environment. Whatever happened to the push for destructible environs and with it the hope of using debris as a weapon as well?

Right now the environment is so static it ruins some of the immersion. I tried to knock over a light (which would have been graphically cool because they all seem to be shadow-casters) but it just stubbornly sits there. Yeah, I feel like a powerful warrior.

To be honest, this is my worry as well. I AM enjoying just wandering around and I LOVE the Sparrow, but there is absolutely nothing to find beyond the very rare "loot" chest that usually just gives you some glimmer, and every now and then some metal plant you can harvest. Hopefully the full game has more.

I'm also disappointed that there are no dynamic elements in the environment that make for more compelling engagements. It's like a COD game in that there are no physics objects. Everything is some kind of immovable object. No Exploding "Barrels", no destruction.

This right here. There is so much possibility for environmental action. It'd be cool if say when you did your ground pound near some of the old rusting planes, pieces of the wings, fuselage and what-not would get blown off. Environmental damage would be cool, maybe at least some interactive objects...

IDK, I'm not impressed with the illumination in the game. Sure the lights and light sources create some cool shadows, but they're all seem baked (or whatever that terminology is). Their light doesn't get scattered when its interrupted and there doesn't seem to be any self shadowing when you walk through different light sources, even your shadow is jarring, it looks like a super imposed silhouette. I think Ryse "that 900p" game has better lighting and shadowing and Destiny doesn't seem to have that much more going on most of the time.

There are plenty of instances of real time lighting that I've seen, and you DO self-shadow. I thought the shadows were pretty good in the game, and used pretty liberally. I don't really see much in the way of Global illumination though. It's hard to tell how much is baked in on the indoor sections, as the lights don't move around- but your shadowing does react, so there is that. I'm inclined to believe they are dynamic, as your "flashlight" does cast shadows, but it's only used in specific areas by the AI, so It's possible it's only dynamic in those sections. I'm not sure.

RYSE is Cryengine, and they are definitely running a more realistic lighting simulation- The worlds are much smaller and less interactively complex (ie, you can't just climb on everything and get a lot of different angles) even though they have all the right touches( like the sim elements, and foliage that reacts to you- even destruction in some cases).

The Art direction is pretty darn good though, and a number of times I caught myself just Looking, so that's a good thing.

I have an extra code if anyone needs one. I'd just put it up but, I don't want to leave it for a lurker. First to quote me can have it.

I was trying to shoot out the annoyingly bright lights that are found indoors...the big rectangle spot lights...they are blinding at times, but no dice. :(

I see my self shadow on the wall along stairs quite a bit when running around indoors.

I also have an extra code....pm me if you want it.

UPDATE: Gone to Soda Jack

I could use an extra one for my son and I to play. But if you want to give it to someone that isn't in the beta, I understand.

In the description of the Crucible match available in the beta, it says something about armor and weapons being equalfor the match. So maybe in the final game there will be matches that let players use their armor and weapons from the story, despite the match being unbalanced.
Already can, it is the Iron Banner, a PVP competition that will pop up every now and then per Bungie.

It's yours...check your pm
Thank you so much Hammer, but Phuque had already given me a code. I really appreciate it though. Enough good cant be said about the people here at UVGF. A couple days ago, I didn't even have a beta code for myself. Now Ive gotten a code, my son has gotten a code, and even another person has given me yet another code that I don't need(Im not going to use the code Hammer, its still yours). Im in awe, and humbled by you UVGF. This is the best gaming community that I have ever been a part of in my 34 years of gaming. God bless you guys.;)

So then pass the X1 code on to someone that would really enjoy it.

I mean me.

Thanks 1 gig a sec Internet. Done downloading in 15 min.

I guess the part that bothers me is that after Borderlands I just want to interact with everything and I can't do that here.

Game seemed ok. I got to the point where your guy lands in the city and you walk around like Mass Effect. I had enough.

- Graphics were decent, but nothing special (gameplay visuals)
- The cut scene graphics look pretty good though. Not sure if it's real time game engine or prerendered game engine, but it looks a bit better than actual gameplay
- Game has screen tearing and that clunky feel when panning the camera. If you're moving slow and in a straight line, it's fine. But when it comes to fast paced aiming, the game engine isn't smooth enough to give a solid feel like CoD
- Menu screens look nice, but the circular menu reticule is a mess. Just have gamers use LS or d-pad and choose tabs. It's like the interface is meant for a mouse, but gamers are using LS analog sticks
- Familiar controls like every other shooter
- Felt Borderlandsy + Mass Effecty + Haloy + Fallouty
- Gunplay has enough weight to it to feel right, but the clunky frame rate when quickly panning the cam + blur effect = last gen feel
- Maybe the actual game has more to the environments, but no matter how good and varied the structures are, it's actually (and likely), corridor hunting and limited interaction with stuff except for loot boxes. It has the look of Fallout, but none of the interaction
- Dreaded unskippable cut scenes, BUT they were actually pretty good. To me, most unskippable cut scenes are a waste of time, but Destiny's was interesting to watch

Pass.

The unskippable cutscene was especially annoying when I was doing a second run on a place with a friend who hadn't done it yet. I agree with most of this except I didn't notice the screen tearing.

The first game my brother compared this to was Phantasy Star Online fwiw.

It may or may not technically be called screen tearing, but games like Skyrim were horrible for this. Pan the camera left or right and the visuals jerked like crazy with some things moving faster than others until you stopped pressing the analog and let the graphics catch up in the split second of time. The same thing even happened in the menu screens messing with the abilities tree.

Destiny's game engine has a similar feel to Mass Effect and Fallout 3.... which is not as blatant as Skyrim. But pan the LS stick left or right and it doesn't look smooth. Blur effect tries to mask it, but it's still evident. Destiny's menus are similar. If you move the circular reticule fast all over the screen, the text boxes get muddy and jerky too.

Tried the X1 beta this afternoon in between lunch breaks and I noticed slightly blurrier image quality and muddier textures compared with the 4. Could be a result of the 900p but I'm betting this will be improved in the retail release since they're bumping it up to 1080p as well.

I didn't have a problem with the frame-rate at all. I actually like the slower pace. The lack of environmental interaction makes it feel a bit last generation. I really hope 343i gets this for halo 5.

I think I see what you mean. The added clarity, while minor, will be nice.

The controls while running need to be tightened up. The agility of your movement while running shouldn't be different than the agility of when you are walking. It would also help the gameplay if you could reload while running.
