How will C-Span fill the hours? Time for a best of special.

was hoping since the CDC closed down, somebody would release the T-Virus or the Rage Virus and really get the party started.

Are conservatives stopping an economic catastrophe by stopping spending or causing it by refusing to follow through on our obligations? They say they are trying to stop our economy from collapsing, but it just might be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Something needs to be done obviously, but you can't just decimate entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare then double military spending.

I thought this was about Obamacare.

That said, I see no path to victory for Republicans in this situation. This was a situation they never should have been in. It will not stop Obamacare and it will only hurt their chances of ever repealing it because stunts like this will hurt them politically in 2014. Republicans should know by now the media is not on their side, and instead of being seen as some valiant effort to stop Obamacare like they'd probably hoped, the media will bombard Americans with stories of federal workers who are not receiving their paychecks and are unable to pay their bills.

Many senior Republicans told them not to do it, Republican political strategists told them not to do it, they did it anyways. Obamacare's bad policies were already beginning to rear their ugly head at the American public, and it didn't need any help from the GOP controlled House.

As a Republican voter, I am highly annoyed by their pathetic and politically destructive efforts. This only serves as a reminder that while I often see Republicans on the right side of things, they lack the basic competence and political common sense to bring their political goals into fruition.

(sorry for the rant, back to the jokes...)

The governments, presidents, polices, lawyers, etc. etc., are fighting over controlling people in USA. It's crazy. I just want to move to MOON and build up the population there.

Supposedly, the shutdown actually costs $200 million a day from what I've heard. Not sure what exactly, but I'd guess it's from taxes and revenue from some of the stuff that got closed down.

lol, blaming Republicans. Neither side wants to budge and both are at fault. the left for not wanting to give an inch on entitlements and the right for not want to budge on higher taxes. Where is Ronnie and Slick Willie when we need them. Oh and since we are at a government shut down, why the hell are they getting paid (I know why but they shouldn't). It's like an owner closing up shop and only paying himself while his crew is out of luck.

They are saying Obamacare will destroy the economy. Before that it was about SS and medicare.

Yeah, I would say it is a lose, lose situation because they will ultimately be blamed for it.

It's a dangerous game of chicken for Republicans. There is absolutely no risk for Obama because ultimately if we have an economic collapse the country will move further left. Just like the republican hurricane sandy victims who took fema money, everyone will vote for the party that's going to give them money when there is a disaster.

"All employees declared nonessential will be furloughed".

My response: Why the f(_)ck are we paying for people that are nonessential? You know what my comopany does with employees that are "nonessential"? They sure as sh!t aint furloughed.

I just wish Virginia's state government had shut down and my job was furloughed. I could be enjoying a vacation and then get paid for it after. Win Win

Essential staff just means barebones. So yes they could get along with a smaller staff, but it would be very hectic and there would be a lot of mistakes.

Happy 7th Birthday Romneycare!

Funny how the idea of universal health coverage called the Individual Mandate originated nearly 20 years ago by the republicans in response to Hilarycare which wasn't universal. oh my how the winds have changed.
Would the House block Obamacare if we just called it Romneycare? I dont think they would.
its all political grandstanding and a way to keep the super rich from paying more taxes

You aren't really seeing this correctly.. "Essential" means just the basics to keep things running, as it's meant to be temporary.

Lots of important things either don't happen, or are put on hold. You can wish for bare bones government all you want, that's not really the cut off here for who is and isn't furloughed.

Sorry, ive lived through 3 of these. The gov't "shutdown" is anything but that. You said it yourself

thats all gov't should be. If its not essential, its part of the bloated bureaucracy. Here is a good example my friend IMed me:
So I am waiting on an FAA approval for our next digital location. We got two back a week ago, bu the third has not been determined. I went to the portal to print the approval letters for my file and of course i didn't even think about it, they're not working so my s*** won't get approved until the shutdown is over
he has to wait for the federal gov't, thousands of miles away to approve a fvcking street sign! How insane is that? Please tell me why the local municipalities, or even the state gov't cant be in charge of that?

Asked why the Department of Defense was suspending intercollegiate athletic contests if government funds are not required, Gladchuk said he was told it was about “optics.”

“It’s a perception thing. Apparently it doesn’t resonate with all the other government agencies that have been shut down,” Gladchuk said.

The National Park Service has ordered the closure of a Virginia park that sits on federal land, even though the government provides no resources for its maintenance or operation.

...

“In all the years I have worked with the National Park Service … I have never worked with a more arrogant, arbitrary and vindictive group representing the NPS,” Eberly said.

...

She called the decision “utter crap.”

“We have operated the Farm successfully for 32 years after the NPS cut the Farm from its budget in 1980 and are fully staffed and prepared to open today. But there are barricades at the Pavilions and entrance to the Farm,” Eberly explained.

No, not really.

Some of the things being shut down are long term essential, just not short term essential.

Yes, lots of bloat too.. but that's not the only stuff that was shut down.

I'm nice and jaded about politics just like the next guy, but I gotta say my jaw just hung open as I watched tea party repubs show up at the WW2 memorial today, get themselves on camera moving a barrier (which had already been removed by the actual vets that served the country), and then Michelle Bachmann gets on the camera and says "we won't let these veterans be used as pawns".

As if they had nothing to do with the shutdown. As if it's all a conspiracy by the Dems. As if ACA (which, ironically, is separately funded and is not impacted by the shutdown) has anything to do with passing a budget.

I mean, jaw hanging open, WTF did I just see kind of moment for me. The folks are complete whack jobs.

Drill was canceled this weekend, but I'll be working my civilian job so it doesn't really matter.

First post on this site btw. Nice set-up. Still sad to see TXB go.

I'm a Republican who despises the current Republican leadership in the House, and am enjoying, immensely, watching Obama grab Boehner by the scruff of the neck, and rub his nose in his own mess.
