Ok I'll reiterate, I don't see anyone here judging an entire gen based on one title. I see people merely discussing the results of the first real next gen comparison.
Watching I See You GIF

Now that I have both consoles, I personally feel that from my first few days with them, we are in for a fun generation.

The PS5 is amazing. I'm enjoying Astro's playroom ALOT more than I thought I would. It is a great showcase of how the dual-sense can be used. If Sony can get their 1st party studios and a few 3rd parties to really emphasize the new controllers, that would help immersion greatly. The new UI is simple and to the point and that works for me.

The Series X is amazing. Quick Resume is not a gimmick but an actual appreciated feature. The BC team hit it out the park with their improvements to older titles including AutoHDR and higher resolution and frame-rates. The new Series X controller is more of the same like the XB1X but with a better d-pad and grip.

Both consoles are whisper quiet and both are pushing out phenomenal graphics and frame-rates.

IMO both went for something different at launch. Sony leaned toward new experiences where as Microsoft went for more familiarity. Neither approaches is incorrect in my mind.

When both Sony and Microsoft studios start pumping out next gen titles, I think we might be in for a modern golden age.

Yes both are amazing

Again measuring performance deltas at this point seems incredibly pointless. These consoles were balanced around their feature sets, both which are not being leveraged today. Comparing to GPUs on PC that have mature drivers doesn't make sense. Neither console is being fully leveraged. One is a little more than the other due to better tools at the moment. Specifically on the Xbox side, it's high end potential is based on using Velocity (otherwise the memory for graphics is short), VRS, hardware accelerated RT (which benefits from the extra CUs) and hardware accelerated ML. I believe those CUs can also be used for hardware accelerated physics if devs forgo ray tracing. None of that is in play today. They are rough ports based on unfinished tools and a pandemic which has disrupted developer efficiency.

All in all, I expect the best gen combined between Xbox and Playstation. Far more differentiation. More reasons to jump into both ecosystems if you can afford it. If you can't afford both, either/or are likely headed for their best generation. Console wars will be boring. Comparing blades of grass, pixel counts or which system drops to 55fps in a cutscene is boring. Best system for you will depend on priorities.

Good news guys. I met with some friends yesterday & ask them if anyone wanted a full HD TV. One of them said okay as he did not have a TV in his room.

That means when I get my next-gen console, I can get myself a 4K TV.

you gave them your tv, that’s nice.... I initially read it as if were like a joke when proven say, “you know ever group of friends has an ugly friend, if you don’t know who that is, then your the ugly one”

VGTech just posted their COD Cold War Comparison:

Both PS5 and Series X in the ray tracing mode use a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 3840x2160 and the lowest resolution found being 1920x1800. PS5 at 120fps, Series X at 120fps and Series S use a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 2560x1440 and the lowest resolution found being 1280x1200. PS5 at 120fps, Series X at 120fps and Series S use a form of temporal reconstruction to reconstruct the horizontal resolution up to 2560 when the horizontal resolution is below this figure.

Summary: PS5 performs better in 120fps mode, 60fps mode is basically the same.

XSS showing it's limitations.

Hopefully it's just the XSX and XSS dev tools that are still in its early stages. Over time, they should be better.
I think it's mainly a matter of designing these games around last gen where that higher clock is just easier to tap into as opposed to the broader XSX palette. Having a similar number of faster compute units will probably pay off in the beginning, I would think. Just less work.

Maybe. Suddenly this article from April doesn't seem so farfetched anymore. Pretty interesting take.

We could well be in a PS3 type situation where the power is just harder to tap into

Funny how the roles have completely reversed now after 2 generations except Sony still has the exclusives coming in full force in launch year, not letting up at all. At least MS is joining the party now with acquiring studios to make exclusives too.

"I'm getting texts and DMs from developers being like, this is such a shame, the PS5 is so superior in all these other ways that they're not actually able to message right now, or can't talk about right now. I heard from at least three different people, since the Cerny thing, that the PS5 is actually the superior piece of hardware in a lot of different ways despite what we're seeing in these spec sheets."

We'll see how true this is once DF gets a hold on both consoles.

Still waiting for that analysis that should be coming out soon that I called for from 8 months ago but there were a lot of doubters back then IIRC.

On another note , Dirt 5 dev said MS tools are not really behind. "Both coming in hot"

It's a bit early to tell if any roles have flipped tbh.

I meant position wise. 2 gens ago, PS3 launched and was a tough nut to crack in terms of getting the most out of it. Wasn't the 360 like super easy to develop for too? 2 gens later, it appears MS is in the same position as the PS3 was except the XSX is still a fine piece of machine and probably not as difficult to code for like the PS3's launch year. The PS5 comes out with guns blazing and seemingly easier to dev for possibly because of better tools. I still remember that dragon game Lair that was at like what 660p or some crazy weird resolution.

That was hardware architecture. This is tools. It's similar on the surface but much more likely to be fixed quicker. There isn't anything overly exotic when comparing development for the Series X/S and new PC tech. In fact, that's the purpose of the tools overhaul and GDK. To make PC/Xbox cross platform development easier. Tools simply are behind.
