Microsoft sells 2,000,000 Xbox One's in 18 days.

Hmm wasn't aware of Mexico or any of the other smaller areas being INITIAL launch countries. I don't see any spots lit up on COD Ghosts World map in those areas. I am pretty sure it launched just in USA/Canada initially.

Maybe. I dunno either. But it certainly included Canada and wasn't citing the same data source (NPD vs Sony's internal estimates). If we took that at face value for the US figure then PS4 only sold 138k from the 16th through the 1st. And either way, it's still only measuring a peak sales rate based off of a PR statement from a source with an agenda, not citing NPD data for a meaningful sales metric like average sales over a given period of time.

It's a silly thing for you guys to get defensive and make excuses about. 1138k in 16 days vs 909k in 9 days for the US. 2.1mil PS4's in 16 days vs 'over 2mil' X1's in 18 days. This notion that there's some large sales gap between the two is sheer stupidity. We have actual numbers and they are right on par with one another. Deal with it folks. The disparity that exists in the minds of forumites isn't reflected in the real world. Let's pretend to be amazed at this turn of events.

astrograd : I'm well aware of how average speed is measured.. and I am not denying that MS is "correct." Never said they weren't, not calling them liars, etc..

I wasn't aware that NPD was only for the US.. for some reason I thought it was for all of NA.

Point taken.. I guess.. I still think it's a dumb brag because Sony clearly had post-launch day stock issues. And I really couldn't care less about how NeoGAF or anyone talks about this crap.. I am me, and I am not biased against MS or Major Nelson.. and I personally think it's a dumb brag because of Sony's incredible launch day sales... I came to that conclusion on my own without anyone's help, it's my opinion.

Very clear judging by Sony's WW numbers and what we know about them that Sony sold the vast majority of their NA stock on day one.. also fairly clear that MS didn't.. their stock was more spread out over their 9 days.. there are a number of indicators of that..which makes a brag about "speed" from the competition dumb in my eyes because of the sheer amount of units said competition sold so quickly.

Ppl are jumping on Nelson's comment because he represents MS and it's fashionable to attack everything X1-related right now. Anyone who understands anything about 'speed' calculations understands it was the appropriate math to use in the context of discrete units of sales. It's not a dumb brag at all. It shows they are selling tons of hardware, just like Sony is. MS sold 909k in a week compared to Sony selling 1138k in 2 weeks. If you'd like to chalk up excuses that's fine as launch periods never reflect actual sales pacing for broad trends.

How many days are the "average" sales within 25% of that mean value, though? I'd guess it's very close to 0. How many days are the sales above the mean and how many are it below? I'd imagine that's 1 and 17. That "mean" figure is mathematically accurate, but sales per day as a measurement should approximate in some way the number of sales that are actually occuring on an average day, not just amortizing a large number of single-day sales over an arbitrary timeframe.

I wasn't aware that NPD was only for the US.. for some reason I thought it was for all of NA.

It tracks everything separately, but what Nelson cited was the figure they release each month specifically for the US data. They also track PAL and Asia now with the cooperation of media-create and Chart-Track/Gfk.

So did MS. Difference was simply that MS put their stock into the US while Sony spread them out for the launch in PAL regions on the 29th.

It's a poorly informed opinion then. :)

We have no data how PS4 sold in the US during the first 9 days from NPD tracking. You are using Sony's internal estimates for US+Canada. Sorry, but I'll take MS's PR which cites actual NPD data vs Sony's internal estimates any day of the week. I only value internal estimates when nothing else is available (like 2mil vs 2.1mil in 18/16 days respectively for X1/Ps4).

And both consoles had supply constraints and continue selling out. MS allocated fewer on day 1 and spread them out more. That only makes Sony's PR statement less meaningful, not moreso. You can't sit here and argue that MS's statement is silly as it ignores stock constrains for PS4, while at the same time not saying exactly the same thing regarding ppl championing Sony's PR statement (who lean on it to refute MS's claim only after ignoring precisely those same constraints for day 1 X1 shipments).

In other words, you are open to ignoring MS's supply constraints resulting from launching in 13 countries on day 1 but find it somehow 'unfair' to do the same on Sony's end. We have actual internal figures from each company for worldwide with average speeds available for calculation on the global level. Both are very, very similar sales paces. I wouldn't be at all surprised if X1 has outsold PS4 since it launched in the US. After all, if they are at 2mil+ in 18 days that's right on the heels of PS4's 2.1mil in 16 days, which includes the PS4 launch in 29 regions compared to 13 for X1.

All of them. Average and mean are synonyms for population statistics. What you mean to ask is 'how many individual days have a sales that day measure within 25% of the mean value cited by Nelson?'.

That "mean" figure is mathematically accurate, but sales per day as a measurement should approximate in some way the number of sales that are actually occuring on an average day, not just amortizing a large number of single-day sales over an arbitrary timeframe.

If both companies used that metric X1 would be wiping the floor with PS4.

Xbox zealots are creepy though they don't want to hear that theres Xbones available.

Why on Earth wouldnt we want to hear that? :txbconfused:

Sony seems to be having supply issues. Microsoft's strategy of staggering the launch and funneling it's supply of consoles into thirteen primary markets, instead of slicing the ham too thin like Sony is doing, trying to supply thirty something markets, is paying off, big time.

More Xbox One's in the wild mean more people can buy them. It isn't like they are not selling what they are shipping like the Wii U.

I can agree that its working nicely but its not a 1st place plan.

Depends on where you want to be first place. Parity does not require even numbers in all place, just superior numbers in the most significant markets. You'll see what I mean when Microsoft's huge install base advantage starts to take it's toll in North America, the jewel in any console maker's crown. In fact, it already has started.

They sold more, but we sold them faster. Sounds like meaningless spin. It is kind of like saying I lost a close fight, but landed more punches.

Depends on your definition of good. Based on it's numbers, I wouldn't say it ever sold "good".

The initial shipment sold out at launch . Scalpers ended up returning them, but initially it did sell well. I don't think either Sony or MS will have that problem here -- not by a longshot.

Funny thing about all the in-stock excuses is that Sony gamers actually think telling gamers Xbox One my be available at some online sites means it is doing poorly or demand isn't there.

All that really does is help gamers on the fence which system to choose to might as well just get the X1 system since it's available right there with a handy link.

Thank you Sony gamers for helping promote X1 by telling people exactly where to get it. LOL

It's really no different than people creating threads helping gamers pinpoint which stores have PS4 or X1 available. People in those threads see the info and make a bee-line asap to buy it and are appreciative when they are able to score a system.

You're doing a fine job helping gamers buy X1 to increase sales! Keep it up.

On the other hand, I change my opinion. I now agree that PS4s are sold out. So for anyone on the fence, don't bother. You're wasting your time. Just get an X1.

It's funny watching fanboys spin things. A console you want to buy being available is a bad thing now! I am sure a gamer who is dead set on buying a PS4 around now is very happy that he/she can't actually find one! Lol MS for having consoles available an in stock for people who want them. (Sony fanboys never change. The most delusional and obnoxious group on the internet.)

Maybe that's why they have so much time on their hands to troll various xbox related threads on forums. They don't actually have a PS4 to play right now.

Quite probably. But it would at least be something that means something, rather than amortizing heavy launch sales over a fewer number of days as if that means anything other than launching later in the month - it's just as useless as claiming Sony sold almost half a million a day in Europe last month.

Well, you know, all of those people who are huge on pre-owned stuff as a matter of principle are just waiting until they can buy them pre-owned at Gamestop anyhow. You'd think they'd be better off trying to trash the PS4 so people would sell them back sooner so they can get it, play Killzone and Resogun, and sell it back before it loses too much value.

(Not intended to be a factual statement, just a tiny bit of humor.)

It happens all the time with ppl misreporting percentages. For instance, 'X sold 300% more than Y!' means that X sold 4 times as many units as Y...not 3 times as many, as most ppl mistakenly assume. 66% to 33% is a 2:1 ratio. It's a 100% margin (phrases like '_ to_ margin' are misnomers; a margin isn't a ratio).
Ah, I knew there was something "wrong" in there, but it was just the use of the a ratio to describe a margin. Thanks for the clarification. I'd rather be wrong and learn something than be right and learn nothing at all. :)

Eh, it still would mean nothing as launch periods with supply constraints still limit actual sales trends. Wait for Q2 2014 for things to settle down and for games to sell the hardware.

They are selling out and being restocked. Not sitting on shelves for days. MS is focusing more on NA for shipments whereas Sony is more focused on PAL. MS has sold through essentially the same amount as Sony has globally, so your position requires you to assume MS is manufacturing vastly more units than Sony, which is highly unlikely.

Btw, your link doesn't work. ;)

Glad I can help, I'm a MS, Sony, and Nintendo gamer. Just pointing out to xbox gamers that the systems are available for those that want one.

They aren't available to anyone who wants one. Some places have them in stock briefly, others don't. Depends where you live and what time of day you check a given website. Case in point, your link there is broken now. The X1 selling out and then being restocked sporadically tells us MS is doing good to restock, but the units still are selling out each allotment. That's why you see such patchy anecdotal-based comments about availability.

If it was struggling to sell out then instead we would see it available all over the place consistently. Instead we see very patchy availability which suggests individual retailer stock is limited by MS's ability to restock, which it does preferentially.
