All Xbox games run on PC already and by extension , the Steam deck, Asus rog etc.
But if they, Xbox, could streamline windows os to a level that like Steamdeck OS is, and keep it open for other stores and streaming services, they could have a serious contender.

Nadella already stated they’ve done mistakes in the past, and in the leaked documents there was a portable shown in their in house product.

It would be a neat next gen thing tho.

I'm no insider "journalist", but...

XBox hardware, out of the 3 makers, is the lowest. PS hasn't had a good track record with handhelds. Then you have to compete with Switch, Steam Deck and Rog Ally.

Then you have the whole cloud system as I mentioned above.

I don't see the driving force to get into this.
They wouldn’t have to compete with switch, honestly no portable can officially compete with Nintendo.

It could be something of a PlayStation Portal and Steamdeck to all third party stores and devices. And more than likely a next gen series s equivalent but portable.

They could probably take the tech from their surface products, preferably the pro/studio, in and ever viviente package, play at home on your console proper, then take the portable for the carpool to work, then continue the game on your pc at work.

I see it more for cloud streaming / gaming possibly . If they add another Xbox hardware sku to the platter, devs will have yet another platform to optimize for . Hello to more patches 😆

Patches will always be a thing, Devs aren’t the features of said hardware, they’ll never get a full grasp on it. Look at larrian, over seven years in active preview and the game still had major bugs and was unoptimized.

The ps360 era was the best showcase of what devs could do with all the knowledge they gained with such a long life cycle, the last of us and halo 4 looked like next gen titles.

If they do do it then it should be for next gen. Cos if both ps and Xbox have portable variants then they should be the gateway into the eco system, cos if they make a current one it needs to be at least better than what vanilla is, the steamdeck. It won’t won’t quite make things easier to dev for, it’ll be like the ps4/one era and have four consoles again.

In the end the sabe could be said for anyone else making a portable console, besides gaming, why buy one when the switch already dominates it.

Games probably will also take longer to come out. Or just for that platform as they prioritize the higher installbase platforms . They really need to see if it's worth it or just prioritize being mainly services based and save the extra costs.

I don't see the purpose if they are trying to get cloud gaming on many devices. Why roll out a device solely dedicated to XBox?
I can see if they will do a 2 system again like the Series S/X.
I think we will see one console with the bells and whistles, the other will be a Roku-like box using the XCloud that uses the same specs as the new console with a handheld for a cheaper price than the Series X.

That way they are 2 different systems with different specs but have the same function.

Launching in 2026 doesn't make much sense IMO, they'd need something that can make a significant gain visually over current gen (and PS5 Pro) and still be affordable. When they did it with the 360 it made sense, the original xbox was too expensive for them to make and they were still the new kid on the block in the console space and needed every advantage they could get. It's an established brand now, everything costs a lot more than it did in 2005 and if you listen to their fans they aren't worried about console sales it's all about subscriptions.

Agree with ya on the most part, but fans aren’t really all about the subs, that’s more ms talking about it. it feels like it’s more about the games, they’ve been pushed back much mainly because of the pandemic, the shortages (chips), geopolitics (devs fleeing Ukraine), the evergreen (delaying and increasing prices on goods) and the economy (inflation). That last bit does make more sense to go with a subscription if you’re being frugal. this year may finally be the year where it gets a consecutive run of 1st titles, not just cod. If they continue to make titles that keep the conversation going then more of the casuals might come into said ecosystem. There more to it but my head hurts 😆

It's the fans that keep saying they aren't worried about console sales because their consoles aren't selling that well and it's a nice cover. New hardware isn't going to change that, they aren't going to get anything out that's worthy of being a "next gen" machine at the price point of Series X in 2025/2026 imo.

They are going to finally start seeing games from these devs they purchased over the next two years, what sense would it make to make their devs start working on yet another console too? let alone 3rd parties who are reportedly not entirely happy having to work on the Series S and X. No dev is going to invest in pushing a new console in a real way when they already have two underperforming xbox consoles and likely two PlayStation consoles and PC?

This isn't 2005 and it doesn't make sense to do that again, they'll never win when it comes to selling the most consoles, people who would buy a new gen xbox that early and likely at a very high price are just going to be their hardcore fans who are already GP subs and own xbox consoles currently, there is no real benefit to it at all IMO.

So there was a midgen refresh planned before ... or rumoured to be at least.

Wonder if this shift in stance was discussed last year already within MS and we are just hearing about all this now.

We know they had a disk-less Series X planned which is what is now likely canned.

So they probably saw the data and determined it was actually worth it to make an optional disk drive. Smart move unless I'm misinterpreting what eternal disc drive means.

Mid gen refresh yes, mind gen upgrade nope.

It was in the court case documents

According to other more PS centric forums, Monday they are announcing the end of Xbox and it will be Microsoft gaming. Everything will be now "console", to encompass PS and Nintendo. Xbox is being removed from Xbox Game Pass.

Isn't this 'bad' though? Wouldn't this mean the console probably won't be that powerful?

Yeah kind of like a Switch and that isn't very powerful. I guess that would be 'bad' for performance enthusiasts if true but if they are trying to duplicate the Switch's success... Would be good for company potentially ?

You guys talk like you know things, make assumptions based on 2nd hand tweets. You know the hardware being used for the upcoming generation and everything being sent over to other platforms.

I've skipped through so many posts because it's nauseating. Same on Twitter.

The only reason I want there to be an official word from MS is so you can all "HOPEFULLY" quiet down.

How much more can you spew?

If everyone knows so much on how to run a gaming company and roll out a console, they should be doing it. C'mon, why don't you experts get some funding and do it?

I can't wait until next week.

Who am I kidding? That won't even be enough. It'll be more bodies for the fire? (is that a saying?)
