The PS4 and PS5 were India's best selling consoles in May and June.

Sales staff at retail tell us that while Xbox Game Pass was a major reason for customers to jump on the Xbox Series S, ongoing discounts on PS4 and PS5 games more than make up for the lack of a competing subscription service from Sony to turn the tide. Frequent discounts as well on staples like FIFA 21 and Assassin's Creed Valhalla for the PS4 and PS5 have cemented sales on Sony's consoles.

"Customers have come in asking for Xbox Series S or X as well as Game Pass," says one sales executive. "But when we explain what they get with a PS4 bundle and what PlayStation Plus is, they more often than not are willing to go with that. A large part of this is because we don't even know when the Series S or X is coming back in stock."

July is most likely to be more of the same thanks to steady restocks of both PS4 and PS5 from Sony. For all of Microsoft's talk of democratising gaming, the fact that it can't get its consoles on shelves is perplexing. More so when you consider India got the Xbox Series X and S at the same time as the rest of the world. Both have sold incredibly well in India in the last couple of months, with the Xbox Series S being the best-selling console in India in March and April.

Xbox has the best June ever.

Hardware sales had a huge month in the United States in June. Consumers snapped up $401 million in new consoles, which is up 112% compared to the same period in 2020, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. A lot of that comes from increased interest in the new generation of consoles. And June also got some help from a huge influx of Xbox Series X/S devices just after the E3 industry trade show.

“June video game hardware dollar sales jumped 112% when compared to June 2020, to $401 million,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “This is the highest total achieved in a June month since 2008’s $617 million.”

For the year so far, 2021 is easily outpacing the 2020, which had to rely on aging Xbox One and PlayStation 4 hardware platforms.

“Year-to-date hardware consumer spending has increased 45% compared to 2020’s first half, to $2.3 billion,” said Piscatella.

The Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch came out on top … depending on how you count.

“Xbox Series X/S was the best-selling hardware platform in dollar sales for the month of June, while Nintendo Switch led in unit sales,” said Piscatella.

This was the best June ever for the Xbox brand, in terms of console sales.

“June dollar sales of Xbox consoles set a new record for the Xbox platform, besting the previous high set in June 2011,” said Piscatella.

For 2021 as a whole, the Switch is still dominant.

“Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform during 2021’s first half in both dollar and unit sales,” said Piscatella.

And the supply-constrained PlayStation 5 continues to set records of its own.

“PlayStation 5 remains the fastest unit-selling console hardware platform in U.S. history for lifetime sales through eight months on the market excluding portables,” said Piscatella.

Ratchet #1 in the US in terms of software sales for month of June. Amazing sales for a single platform. Insomniac dev of the generation so far, knocking it out with Miles and now Ratchet in just first 8 months since next-gen consoles launched.

Content

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
debuted as June's best-selling game, achieving the highest launch month dollar sales of any title in franchise history. Launch month dollar sales more than doubled those of the previous high, set by Ratchet & Clank in April 2016

Mario Golf: Super Rush launched as the 3rd best-selling game of June 2021. Launch month dollar sales were the highest ever achieved by a Mario Golf game. The previous high was set by Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, which launched for the Nintendo GameCube in July 2003.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 jumped from #51 in May to rank 17th on the June best-selling titles chart. The Switch version of the game was released in the U.S. during the month, accounting for most of the gains.

The June release of the A Pirate's Life content update helped push Sea of Thieves up from 36th a month ago back into the top 20 best-seller’s chart. Sea of Thieves originally launched in March 2018

Accessories

June 2021 spending on video game accessories fell 1% compared to a year ago, to $207 million. First half accessory sales reached $1.2 billion, an increase of 14% when compared to the same period in 2020.

Sony's DualSense Wireless Controller Midnight Black was the best-selling accessory of June 2021, while the DualSense Wireless Controller White led in first-half sales. Three of the top 4 best-selling accessories of June were DualSense Wireless Controllers.

Glad to see Xbox breaking records and Xbox and Switch rocking and topping the charts. Impressive indeed.

Sea of Thieves, released over 3 years ago, and STILL in NPD charts and Steam charts.

Still remember some suggesting Spiderman sales weren't that good at launch.

8 months later and still going strong.

Didn’t you just contradict yourself? 🤪

Nope. I just see them promoting their own brands with facts.

They do still mention that XS is #1 for the month in terms of dollar sales in their article. So it's not like they are omitting facts. They are just emphasizing their own stats which is what MS does every month.

I am fairly sure Xbox seX is the best selling black colored next gen console.

F1 sold 68% on PS platform, 34% on Xbox.

Nintendo's latest remaster, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, was the best-selling boxed game in the UK last week, GfK data reveals.

It's only the fourth time a Zelda game has claimed No.1, following Link's Awakening on Switch in 2019, Wind Waker on GameCube in 2003 and Ocarina of Time on N64 in 1998 (when it was Christmas No.1).

Skyward Sword HD sold slightly better at launch than the Link's Awakening remake from 2019 (sales are 1.3% higher). Link's Awakening launched alongside the Switch Lite and during a typically stronger month for game sales (September). On the other side, the UK install base for Switch has increased exponentially since 2019.

The HD version of Skyward Sword sold 9% fewer boxed copies at launch than the original managed way back in November 2011 (when it charted at No.7). Of course, digital sales are not included in these charts and as the Wii version was not available as a download, it's likely that this new version actually sold better at launch than the original.

It's worth noting that although Skyward Sword arrived on Wii when its install was at eight million (significantly higher than where the Switch is currently), it was coming towards the end of its life (Wii U arrived a year later) and at a time when Wii sales were in rapid decline.

Having to settle for No.2 on the starting grid is F1 2021. It's quite a slow launch for Codemasters' new racing game, with boxed launch sales down almost 30% compared with last year's game. 34% of sales were of the Xbox version, the PS4 edition accounts for another 34%, and the remaining 32% was on PS5.

Elsewhere, last week's No.1 Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart drops to No.10 after an 80% sales drop week-on-week. Meanwhile, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin tumbles ten places to No.13 after a 68% sales decline in its second week.

Comparing 2 platforms against 1

So the Xbox Series and Xbox One now only count as 1 platform...

Just because they didn't separate the X1 and XS versions doesn't mean it's all XS. If anything, the ratio should be close for last gen and next gen. So around 17% for X1 and 17% for XSX and XSS.

Vastly more popular console brand sold better than less popular Console brand.

In other news, water is wet, fire is hot.
