I am enjoying the game. I guess because I am playing a bit and taking breaks instead of playing for long stretched is the reason it isn't getting repetitive for me.

This is definitely the best looking launch game from either company.
thats exactly what i am doing, i love the game but wont play longer then an hour or so at a time, taking my time with this one, i have plenty to play

I just got this and am enjoying it. Sure, the combat system isn't super deep, but I'm having fun with it.

Just got to level 3 and it has been fantastic so far (playing on hardest difficulty). I'm trying to figure out how to get perfect timing on my blocks and hits to maximize my XP. Freaking tough!

What's the trick to executions? I pull one off every once in awhile but seemingly by accident.
I feel like I'm opposite of everyone else for some reason. Everyone is saying executions are too easy to pull off. And I've only managed a couple so far. What am I not doing?

I'm assuming it's all in the timing? I was under the impression from videos that they would practically be automatic.

You have to hit an enemy enough to get the skull over their heads. When the skull appears, then hit the right trigger. That will then begin the execution QTE.

I finally poked my head in here after spending some time playing the game. I personally love it. The combat is fun and I love the strategy of choosing the reward. I think a lot of folks are not giving it a chance which is sad.

It's that easy? Lol

Thanks I'll try that.

When you see a skull come over the npc head hold your right trigger in to activatethe execution then follow the prompts like yellow or blue.

Don't forget to upgrade your skills and use your special which is the right bumper. Y button opens them up whilst their shield is raised.

Why do all 3rd person games insist on having the camera so close to the character?

Honest question....if it was ugly, would it still be good?

Yeah, it would still be fun.

That said, the visuals add to the experience tremendously. The facial animation and motion capture is some of the best I've ever seen in a game, and that makes the virtual performances stand head and shoulders above most other games out there, so the visual fidelity definitely help in the story telling.

The visual fidelity also helps on the 'brutality' front. If it was stick figures, it wouldn't be nearly as gratifying to complete a combo/execution.

You can also loosen up one enemy until he has the skull over his head (but don't kill him), and then loosen up another guy until you have two enemies with skulls over their heads. When this happens, if the enemies are close enough together, you can execute a double execution, and yes, it's as awesome as it sounds. Don't forget that the dpad allows you to switch between different bonuses granted for doing executions. You get more XP for really nailing strings of attacks and not taking damage.

The A button? Your best friend in this game.

I am surprised to see quite a bit of very positive comments on the game here. I might really dig it myself, who knows. My biggest concern is length. Anyone finished it?

Anyone had issues with it failing to load at certain points and just staying on a black screen? It's never frozen, just failed to load the visuals, I can hear some ambient sound. Restarting the game fixes it, but it's happened 3 times now, just wondering if others have had this.

Its pretty short, a fun romp though. I beat it a couple of days and should have spaced it out more.

I've finished it. Twice. On easy, you could get through it in probably 5 hours or so, each difficulty jump will add an hour or so (on average)... but I've also played it a bunch prior to launch, so my time may not be indicative of others... but if anything, that's on the very conservative side, and it would take you longer.

finished it, didnt feel like a choir at any time. nice little game

some parts looked spectacular

I think it really depends on what kinds of games you like, obviously. If you dig action games that have upgrade trees, and the ability to replay 7-8 hr games on increasingly harder settings, this is most definitely worth a look. I am playing on Normal and can easily see myself beating it on Hard and at least attempting Very Hard.

I've asked before if the game had New Game Plus, and while it technically doesn't appear to, you can just choose any previously beaten chapter to replay and pick the difficulty. I'm sure you'll have all of your upgrades and levels carry over that way.

Even neoGAF are generally praising the game. Here's a quick clip I made from early in the game. Not going to watch Flynn's post yet, I haven't finished the game!

i did not like it first of all but once you start getting the hang of the blocking and deflecting blows it turns into a really good game.the graphics are amazing the york level with the water fall that i had seen on the gifs on this thread are so much better when seeing it in game.i think some of the bad reviews are down to not playing the game correctly and just button mashing and probably they played it on easy.

Finished the game on hard yesterday so here is my verdict that will hopefully help everyone who is still on the fence:

* If you want a challenge definitely choose "hard" - anything below might be way too easy
I think that the difficulty definitely changes the way you play the game: As every hit you take is actually punishing on hard you really have to block, counter and be very concentrated overall. Still think that many people don't get the game because it's NOT your typical action/hack&slay experience.
* Finished in about 7 hours havn't touched MP yet
* Observing your enemies and blocking is key, as is the healing ability - I think that the core gameplay is actually quite good - it's the lack of OTHER satisfying activities that really really hurts the game in the end
* Thus it's advised to play the game in short sessions as it doesn't get as repetitive
* Story isn't above average for a videogame: It's basically Gladiator the videogame but on a much more basic level. Life-like faces really help to sell an otherwise unremarkable and predictable plot. In other words: It's the presentation that sticks out not the story itself.
* Set-pieces are top-notch, some vistas are simply mindblowing.
* Graphics are in a league of it's own. Some of the best I've ever seen, PC included. Only downside: Very linear levels, some missing effects ([some] water/foliage not reacting to player movement).
What really annoyed me was the small number of models for both friends and foes. EVERY f*** roman soldier looks the same including the same body height and overall physique. With a game that looks that good it really puts you out of the experience because you feel like fighting for a clone army not human beings. Barbarians are the exact same thing, a little bit of visual variety would have helped tremendously. As it is it sometimes looks comically bad.
* Overall I really enjoyed the ride, however I couldn't shake the feeling that there was a TON of potential untouched and thus a lot of opportunities missed. This is a very weird game that feels polished (graphics, presentation) and very rough (lacking variety) at the same time, it's a love-hate-thing.
I feel good with my purchase in the end because I want to support this (potential) franchise. Ryse is a controversial start but as a whole package it's promising.

Also, I'm sorry, but this clip looks better than anything PS4's got:

WARNING - MILD SPOILERS ... not much story is given away here... but some moments are from late in the game...

Yeah that Colosseum level was pretty gorgeous.

I'm only about 3 hrs in so far, but I think this is an excellent analysis from what I have played.

I really hope there will be a sequel for this game. It looks like Crytek ran out of time for other game mechanics, but now that the ground work is done they can build on it and address the short comings for the next Ryse game.

The lack of variety in the enemy character models is kind of ridiculous. Especially the fat, bearded Barbarian. Whenever I se him coming, I'm like " this fu****, AGAIN ?"
