Although I don't always trust or agree with reviews, like most of you I tend to look at the general consensus (e.g. Metacritic) to determine if it's worthwhile, and anything that gets below a 7 as an average is off my list.
The vibe heading into Ryse's release was abysmal, and so I'd pretty much written it off as a failure. But when I went to buy a game at Walmart ($49.95 opening day, thank you very much), none of the other launch day titles really grabbed me more than Ryse. Maybe it was its great graphics I'd seen on the web, or the videos, or its historic vibe that it gave off. I don't know, but at the last minute I decided to gamble and picked it up.
I'm glad I did. Ryse a great game. Amazing graphics with an excellent well-told story, great voice acting, beautiful score, a blending of game and cinema. Sure, it's light on game mechanics and linear, but what is there is fun if a bit repetitive. I never got tired of playing it, and I intend to go through it a couple more times to try for the achievements. Multiplayer is also fun. I found myself smiling a LOT in this game, so I'd give Ryse an 8.5, but I value the storytelling more than most.
Don't believe all the negative reviews. Sure, it may not be to everyone's liking, but whoever gave Ryse a 4 is just plain ridiculous. In so many ways, it's a AAA title.
