Seems like a hell of a lot of work especially if they don't charge for it etc, makes no sense, they'll do fine doing what they're doing.

Yeah exactly. They have to port the whole game if they want to make it 120fps. It's not a simple patch like what the Xbox does. Lots of devs probably don't see any real reason to do it if it's going to be a significant amount of extra work.

Dirt 5's headlights have been shown more than a few times :) (like, more times than anyone has played Dirt 5, especially at 120hz mode)

What's hilarious is COD has exclusive content on PS side, but runs better on Xbox, while AC:V was pushed by MS but runs a little bit better on PS.

Early games folks, doesn't really mean a darn thing.

"How will the Dualsense change the way we play games? I doubt many games will integrate it as deeply as showpiece that was Astro’s Playroom, but first-person shooters will likely never feel the same. But that’s not what matters right now. What matters is that Sony still managed to make the feeling of playing on new hardware revelatory in ways that I genuinely did not expect, even without a dramatic visual leap.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was clearly not a PS5 exclusive, but it only has Dualsense on PS5. And that makes its an exclusive experience within a third-party game, more impressive slight of hand."

I've been saying this since the beginning. Unlike Microsoft, Sony focused their console around immersion. This was their selling factor and prime focus when advertising their machine rather than TFs. It's not that they didn't care about horsepower, but just like any gen before this one, horsepower can only take you so far. After awhile, it starts to feel like the same game with a fresh coat of paint. Because visuals only last for so long, developers have to work twice as hard to sell you on the fun factor since nothing else is brought to the table to enhance that experience.

Having said that, graphics is not going to sell people on these platforms - especially if you need a magnifying glass, it's going to be the experience. Don't underestimate this as it is far more important than you think.

And lastly, Sony's tools are not going to stand still. I'm not sure why people keep running to this as if it's going to make some huge difference or something. Sony doesn't have a weak platform and unlike the PS3 vs the 360 and below, these consoles will not stagnate in horsepower. There will be a mid gen upgrade with a PS5 Pro and I guarantee you it'll be a whole lot more powerful than 10 or 12TFs if this minute to minute frame difference is all people care about. So you have to ask yourself how relevant is this horsepower race really.

Sony has been doing most things right for the past decade as far as consoles go. The only major failure is PSP.

This is a current game though.

It was released 9 months ago. If you're talking about if people are still playing it, then yes you are correct in that context.

Sony allows 120hz for those games that are being developed for the PS5 now due to how their BC works, the devs need to do a complete native port for 120hz for older games.

Yes, Vita, imagine it is so bad that people cannot remember the name, like that MS streaming service.
I have a PSP-3000 but I always wanted a PSP Go (I know, said nobody ever). I would have enjoyed a Vita too.

I returned yesterday, The game is still fun, but it would be nice to be more compact. Sad so many game release in Nov/December that I can't put time into a single game & AC being so long is a con than pro for me.

Wrong thread 😜

Talked to my dev buddy for the first time since he wasn't NDA'd about everything post console launch. Only very recently gained low level access to Series X. Low level access is how they optimize. Devs haven't had time since GDK update to really be able to do that. Expect to see notable difference start in the spring. Today even with newest GDK update, many features are still not enabled. I asked about any issues being related to hardware and not just tools (specifically asked about memory) and he said none. Memory isn't a bottleneck. Some of the features are a long ways away from having an impact though (specifically ML stuff). Years before devs truly learn how to leverage them well. He hates DF comparisons and think it's bad for gaming but for those that have to know, Series X has more available performance now that he has low level access before any of the disabled features are active.

Someone else who knows a dev conferred similar things about bump in performance. Said he was told 50% increase in rasterization in second half of 2021. This is not factoring in things like super resolution which is probably a long ways out. Biggest difference is his dev source did say still learning how to deal with the memory setup. Some devs are struggling with it. He also said switching to the most recent GDK isn't trivial. Can break stuff. So just because an update is available, unlikely to impact games coming out right now. PS5 will improve next year as well but not by as much.

Me trying to fill in the gaps from multiple sources. PS5 will win or tie most games until middle next year. Devs will show a noticeable bump mid to late next year. Will be 2 to 3 years to see if the features Microsoft waited extra long for will pay off.

DF and other similar comparisons should still be irrelevant. Like my buddy says, good devs know how to reduce things where average eye won't notice. He doesn't think the vast majority of gamers would ever know which version was better (now or later) unless someone did a freeze frame and zoomed in on the least performant parts of games. Even though he says Series X will be more performant, he believes it's stupid as s*** that people on Twitter and Youtube fight about it. Fun stuff will be when Epic adds their UE5 features next year.

Take it or leave it. Just sharing what I was told.

I'll agree with this. Sony is very focused on immersion. You can see it in their 1st party focus. Their selling point is putting you in the middle of these stories, making you feel connected with characters and the world. The controller is another layer to this.

That said, I wouldn't trade the Elite 2 controller for any of that. Function over immersion for me. I'm more gameplay than immersion. Want better control than impact to my senses. I respect that many gamers have completely different priorities. When I can finally find a PS5, I'll leave the haptics and resistance enabled for the story driven games just for something different. I don't think different automatically equates to better than. It's still about the priorities of the gamer.

What role does our buddy do eactly. Just curious. Art, code, gameply, level design, marketing?

Also to be fully transparent, I hesitated even mentioning the comparison. To me the main point was to outline current issues and let everyone know when you could expect to see noticeably better results. I know Val (or whatever he's going by right now) will have a selection of YouTube videos he insists I watch by people who've never developed games to prove why my buddy is fake news. Too much work to get involved with that here. Lol

As an aside, I am going to interview him to do an article for Xbox Era. Was debating whether I want to even go too far down that path though. When he agreed to do the interview, it was mostly to discuss next gen in general. What tools he's excited for and some of the next gen possibilities. Devs don't like being publicly pulled into system wars. But could probably touch on the Xbox side of the tools issue for it.

Makes game assets. Graphics basically. Been doing it 2 decades. Contractor. Primarily works with UE.
The user interface, 2D art, 3D modeling, texturing/shader, animation, vfx, character rig etc? But I take he is on the art side of development.

I guess we will see in the coming months how games shape off.

3D texturing/shading. Haven't asked if he's done more but he's talked about that stuff mostly. He's also doing his own 3D Indie on the side so my guess is he knows how to build 3D models as well.

Do you think Halo Infinite and Forza Motorsport will be knocking it out of the park, graphically, performance and game play?

Forza, yee...if halo really is an open world game or just keeps to said large scale then kinda, graphically.
Some claim Horizon Zero Dawn is a graphics king (I don't agree, but that is for a different day), and it is open world.
