If it means smoother gameplay and the res is only 72p in some specific parts but usually the same I'd take the smoother performance. If we are talking 1080p to 720p/900p and both hitting mostly the same framerate but the higher res has a few more drops here and there yeah I'll take the res because you can see the difference there.
It's really pointless even comparing these games anymore, a couple of frames here and there or an insignificant difference in res at times that we can't see ourselves but need a website to pause the game and count pixels to let us know just seems stupid. Truth be told it was stupid to worry about it much last gen, the PS4 was more powerful than the X1 so yeah it won just about all of these things, the X1X was more powerful than the Pro so it won all of those comparisons. Now we have two machines that are on par with each other, each having different advantages and disadvantages compared to the other and so far the games are coming out pretty much the same with the PS5 actually "winning" more overall but by such a small amount it really doesn't mean anything.
Maybe in a couple of years when devs are only working on these machines and have gotten their engines actually set up to truly take advantage of what these offer this stuff will matter a bit more again but right now it just seems like rinse and repeat with each new game, Series X with a meaningless res advantage and PS5 with a meaningless FPS advantage.
Agreed. We've figured out they are pretty much on par now with cross gen games with the XSX sometimes getting a little higher resolution and the PS5 sometimes getting a little better performance. The closest two competitor consoles can be after more than a decade and 2 generations later, which is nice for once.
Now the real next-gen comparison will happen when multiplatforms start to only release on PS5/XS consoles, things might change then.
