Hmmm, must suck that a new xbox is coming out so soon after the XB1 released. Kinda like being dupped into buying 2 xboxes within a single generation.
Why? The Xbox One we currently have won't stop working. It's still going to play all the gams that are coming out.

If it's not for you, you can skip it, quite literally 80% of the last gen base will skip any next gen console in its first year. 4 years is OG Xbox lifespan and 8 Years a 360 lifespan. At any rate i'd take a 4 year lifespan vs. a 3 year lifespan.

There's only one 'p' in duped, and the choice of using that word is all the evidence necessary that your post is worthless. Go wave your dick elsewhere.

True enough. I just find it ironic that for years, console gamers cry about pc gaming cost, but don't blink an eye at getting a newer console just a few years later.
Personally, I find it a bit disturbing that a console would come out so far behind the curve at half a grand in cost, to only drop another console a few years later.

Don't take it the wrong way, it's not an Xbox bash...me personally, I'd like a bit more longevity out of my console.

Or three... if too many games come out using HDR, i might have to get an S.

This makes no sense.

PC's and consoles are different devices with different strengths and weaknesses. To claim that "there's really no need to own an X1" is both partially correct (by design), and partially false (illustrating your misunderstanding).

If you think you don't need a console anymore, that's great! You now the option to game on a PC and you'll get all the benefits that brings with it (more power, more customization, etc.)... and both you and Microsoft win. You win, because (in your opinion) you don't need an Xbox anymore, so MS just saved you a ton of money. MS wins because they've earned your business on the most powerful and flexible platform in the world (Windows 10, which happens to be theirs).

How is that bad, let alone "seriously bad" for anyone? Giving people real choices and options?

Now, I for one would NEVER game primarily (let alone exclusively) on a PC, and here's why:

1. Price of entry is too high for power experiences. Consoles still offer the absolute best performance bang for your buck. Same spec PC's vs. consoles will always lose in real-world perf, so just to MATCH the performance of a console, you need to buy something much more powerful than a console.

2. PC is a pain in the ass: Startup and entry into games
. On my Xbox, I walk in the door, I say "Xbox, On" and within seconds my whole living room is powered on, ready to go. I pick up my controller, and within a minute or so I've launched into the game I want to play. Easy, fast, simple. On PC, I have to wait for the thing to load up, sign in (password protected, since it needs to be - as I have lots of secure things on my PC), wait for my game hub of choice to load up, THEN launch into a game, and hope that it works. It takes way longer, and is a much bigger pain in the ass.

3. PC is a pain in the ass: Software and hardware compat. I HATE dealing with incompatibilities, and they're all over PC's. I use STEAM on multiple machines, and Age of Empires II HD just doesn't work on one of my machines. No idea why, it just fails. One of my games had terrible performance and stability on a popular FPS until I updated my drivers... and then it was just 'alright'. No company in the world can ensure their products work on every combination of software and hardware configs, so inevitably it takes WORK just to get things running... PAIN IN THE ASS! Have I EVER needed to do that on my Xbox One? No. Not once.

4. PC is a pain in the ass: Gameplay/perf inconsistencies. Even with better-than-console specs on a PC, it's not uncommon that perf hitches inconsistently. I'd VASTLY prefer a steady 900p/30fps to 4K inconsistent/jitter/hitchy-ville... and performance on PC's is just terribly unpredictable. Oh, and let's not forget about all those little background tasks that, if not managed, can also kill perf. PAIN IN THE ASS! Do I deal with that on my console? Never. To get a flawless experience that's as consistent as a console, yet meaningfully better image quality, I'm looking at 3x to 4x the cost of a console (minimally).

5. PC is a pain in the ass: Input devices. To run a PC decently in a living room for gaming, you'll need a mouse, a Keyboard, and a controller. With Xbox, I have a controller I can use - and EVERYTHING I need to do can be done with it... not to mention, voice controls are an awesome ease of use addition, which doesn't work nearly as well on PC. I don't want a mouse and keyboard in my living room. have enough remotes and controllers, I don't need more clutter... not to mention, what a pain in the ass to have to use a mouse/keyboard to start up the machine, and THEN transition to controller for playing games... PAIN IN THE ASS!

Those are just the top 5 reasons I'd NEVER choose PC gaming over console. I don't like PC gaming. Windows 10 has warmed me up to it a bit, but I don't generally like gaming on PC's for all those reasons (and more).

So yes, there is still a reason (many, in fact) to own an Xbox One over a PC.

But the most elegant and beautiful part of MS's strategy is that they won't make you choose. You'll buy the games once, and play them anywhere. If you're like me, you probably have a PC in some room that's NOT your living room, and a console in your living room... in MS's vision, you can play the same games in both places anyway. Buy into the PC realm for the most powerful gaming for a while? No problem! Your Xbox games go with you. Get burned out on PC expenses and annoyances? No problem. Get a console, and your games go with you... It really is the best of both worlds, because they're the same world now... and whichever works best for you is where you can game.

I love it.

Yeah, but the regular Xbox One will be treated like a ginger stepchild now, innit?

Will you hold the same reservations about Sony's console when it releases sooner or do they get a free pass for some arbitrary reason?

Not at all.

If I wasn't already going to own a 4K display when Scorpio launches, I'd have no reason to buy it. I don't care about VR, and I think resolution beyond about 900p is diminishing returns.

Fair enough. But if console gamers are now going to start justifying the cost of a 4 year console life cycle...can we get console gamers to stop complaining about the cost of pc gaming? A 4 year life cycle puts console gaming at costing more than pc gaming. (I'm not trying to start a "vs" war)

I would. I have zero interest in dropping half a grand on a new console....when my current console is....still pretty new.

My concern with a new console has nothing to do with "hate on X competitor"....it has more to do with dropping that kind of money on a console, for it to start losing support so soon after.

Sure I guess, i didn't realise that was a thing. There's still plenty of breadth to discuss closed box vs. build you're own. I don't think you'd get a PC to last 8 years either though

The important question now is how much will it be? A console that powerful has to be back to the price point of $599-699 I bet.

Xbox One will NOT be losing support for any version. All games will be forward and backward compatible. None of the systems will be losing any support. Not sure why you're using that as a negative.

HDR will only benefit those with compatible sets. No reason for a current xbo owner with a non hdr compatible set to get the slim especially with Scorpio around the corner.

Yup as my post explained....no reason to own a xbox. Thx MS
I will be fragging with you in Gears 4 and I DON'T have to pay to play online! muwahaha
Yup no need for you but there is for 10s of millions of others.

I do. I built my last PC in 2006-2007 and I've just been upgrading bits and pieces whenever I feel like it. Most recent was my CPU and motherboard. I can still play Overwatch on my GTX570 haha.

No? I built my pc when PS4/XB1 released. It cost me, if I remember correctly, less than $700. The thing today still runs games at higher than 1080p resolution at over 60 fps. It's future proof for the next few years. And by the time I do need to upgrade, I'll be able to upgrade for less than the cost of a console. I also don't pay a monthly cost to play games online (not that it's a necessity).

I just find it ironic that for the longest, cost was one of the factors (even though it's been debunked tirelessly) against pc gamers from console gamers....now, cost is not an issue.

Im getting both.

Eh, I don't see the One having much support beyond 2019, sure EA stuff and poor CoD games and that for a time, but no-one will hold grudges if it "only" lasted 5 years. It's not the hardware that had short lives, it's the games taking 3 years to make just made it seem that way.

I didn't bring up Sony. Actually, other than you and maybe one other poster, no one was really talking about Sony.

My input was purely based on on my feelings of having another console drop so soon. Nothing of what I said related to MS hate nor Sony love. People don't need to get their panties in a bunch.

Millions more who will see it this way

Millions will see it one way or the other, but in both cases, MS wins - and gamers win.

MS welcomes all into the world of Windows 10 and Xbox anywhere gaming. It's a great time to be a gamer, on PC or console (or both), with Xbox.
