PS5 News + Speculation

Yeah but he's also making the assumption that they are going for that price point etc. We don't know what it will be, it could be 9.2 it could be 12.8 or anywhere in-between. I do think it's funny how hysterical some people on resetera are about these things when we simply don't know. That guy Klee who has supposedly confirmed his sources with their mods says the PS5 is slightly more powerful but that both consoles are so close it doesn't matter and that both are going to look pretty much the same and the world is fine. Now all of the sudden some people start talking about old info that's been around for something like 6 months and the sky is falling lol.
This is new info.

Why are people back on the no RT when Cerny brought that up in the second interivew himself? he said it's GPU accelerated RT.

There are some now on resetera saying XSX is RDNA1 and they brought hardware accelerated RT up for it the same way some here have been saying Sony did for the PS5. I think it's best that we don't put too much stock in what the rank and file say over there, most of them seem as clueless if not more so than any of us.

Someone did make a good point over there about paying attention to what's not being said, people assume double X1X is 12TF RDNA which is not true, it's less than that, 12TF RDNA would be a decent amount higher than twice as powerful as the X1X but people keep putting words in Phil's mouth. People assume it's RDNA 2 because the wording on the XSX page says "next gen rdna architechture" which actually could mean that it's RDNA1 because they didn't say "next gen OF rdna" RDNA is next gen compared to GCN.

I'm not saying I believe that stuff one way or the other but when they are asked to confirm it directly MS hasn't done so, it's best to wait until they give us the actual specs before we believe too much of what's being said over on resetera or even from some gaming sites because they seem to have taken to trusting 2nd hand sources for their reporting. It could end up that XSX is 12TF rdna 2 and that'd be great, ps5 could be as well or they could be somewhere lower and still be awesome even if they were RDNA1. I am just ready for a new generation already and next holiday can't come soon enough lol.

People are saying no AMD made RT.
Sony is likely offering a custom solution.

Does that really make any sense though? Sony partners with AMD to make the CPU/GPU for their console, RT was coming along next year so why would Sony go out of their way to come up with their own RT and then make AMD work it into the GPU hardware when they already have a solution for it? I don't know, a lot of people seem to be grasping at straws for some reason.

Maybe the RT tech in the PS5 isn't as far along as the xsx and or Sony wanted a cheaper custom solution that they or someone else could make?

I'm honestly still suspect of the 12 TF number. I still think it's the whole " TF aren't a good metric, and 10 TF now amounts to what 12 used to be" kinda thing. Dude from DF does keep saying 12, but I don't know if he's just extrapolating "2x power of the One X" verbage...

The Dev kit thing could just be a difference in not having up-to-date kits. It's way too early for people to be freaking out or speaking in effective absolutes.

Not to mention you wouldn't expect a separately developed component to be as efficient as one designed as part...

Yeah Richard Leadbetter seemed to be taking the people who were claiming 12TF as reliable, it wasn't quite clear if he had his own source verify the claim. If it is 12TF RDNA2 that's awesome but if not it will still be great hardware.

Maybe they believed that the ps5 was actually gonna release this year and software solution was their only option???

I'm in the minority but I really don't think that the difference between the rumored 12TF of XBSX and the 9TF of PS5 is really going to make a difference to the average consumer. Games/experiences will make the difference. The Switch is approaching ~40 million units sold and its not in the same power realm of the PS4 or XB1.

Sony with its litany of proven 1st party studios and 3rd party relationships really don't need to pursue IMO the terraflop title so strenuously as MS does. Now while I wouldn't bet the farm on it, I'd wager Sony could put out a relatively weaker console compared to MS and compete and thrive on the strength of their 1st party titles alone.

I hadn't read this about BC:

"The report also suggests that the alleged PS5 GPU will be able to switch between three modes in order to offer backwards compatibility with PS4 and PS4 Pro titles. While a “gen 2” mode is evidently what the PS5 will normally be running next-gen games on, according to the report, its two separate “gen 1” and “gen 0” modes allow for backward compatibility. The gen 1 mode features the exact same metrics as a PS4 Pro: 36 compute units, a 911MHz core clock, and 218GB/s of memory bandwidth and 64 ROPs. "

One of the side effects of coding to the metal is that when you move to new metal, you need to make that metal reflect the old one.

I can't see them reveal the new PS5 at CES; i'd love to be proved wrong but I can't see it.

On the whole power/Games narrative I'll pitch in with this; Power matters to and extent but games you can play on one system only will always hold the key, the quality and quantity of those games is what sells consoles (myself included).
