Official Thread Rise of the Tomb Raider

If it's just the base game for $60, I'll pass. I'll play it, but not at that price. I expect that the game will drop in price pretty rapidly, so you should be able to get it at half-price after a few months.

If that rumor is true, and if the other rumor is true (about Neo releasing in October and requiring Neo-enabled versions for games released in October), then there should be a Neo-enabled version. That might be a nice step up. However, that's a couple of "if's" based on rumors. We'll have to wait and see how things really shake out.
It's $60 and includes all previous DLC from season pass, new DLC and some PSVR support for a select area. Amazing game.

Yeah, I know; that post was from before the 20th Anniversary version got announced. Those posts above are from a thread I created on the new version. I just merged it with this one, for the sake of clarity.

Reading elsewhere, a lot of PS4 owners seem put out by SE/CD and say they won't pay $60, will wait for a price drop, will buy the game used. They want to express their disapproval ("you snubbed me, so I'll snub you"), which of course is their right, but I'm surprised by the level of resentment some people still harbor about the exclusivity deal. I mean, it seems like a trivial thing to get upset over. I guess it rankles people because historically TR was a PS franchise. And also, some people are just easily offended.

To me, a good game is a good game. It's not like bread; it doesn't get moldy sitting on the shelf. I don't care that MS had it for a year. I had plenty to play in the meantime. Seems silly to get bent out of shape over something so small.

I'm still going to wait for a price drop, though. I've got other games I'd rather get to first, and by early 2017, it should be down to half price.

I think I am a little behind here at Union. I have been crazy busy in real life and haven't posted as much lately, so I think I have missed some conversations and merges. Sorry!

I don't understand that either. Historically it started out on PC and Sega Saturn as well. Sony made a console exclusive agreement for 3 years up till 2000. That was 16 years ago!!!! Get over it! Why were they not mad when exclusive deals were made then for the game, taking the game away from other gamers (PC, Dreamcast, Sega Saturn)?

Are they mad that Insomniac made games exclusive to PS for years, then exercise their rights to make an exclusive game for the Xbox (Sunset), are they going to boycott Spiderman now because they are historically with PS?

Sounds childish to me.

And to your comment about a good game is a good game. I agree. My question is this. If let's say Call of Duty Infinite Warfare released today for $60, and of course you never played it, you would pay $60 for it. Lets say in 5 years you still never played it, why wouldn't you still pay $60 for it? What changed? It is the same game, will have the same value in game play. And I also see no reason to wait to play a game I am looking forward to playing.

I guess they will do the same with Dead Rising 4.

There are exclusive deals on both sides, so I don't understand why anyone would boycott. I thought gamers praised exclusives?

I have a hard time understanding them, too. I've said so in threads at GAF, a couple of times -- that I don't get why people are holding a grudge after a year, why take it so personally, etc. I'm not alone, of course -- many other people say the same thing. So this resentment isn't universal, although I have seen it pop up in several places.

Some of them talk about it as a "principle," as if they're being high-minded (as you point out, they'd have to be consistent by holding grudges about other things, too, then). The more honest ones will say it's their own self-interest, and this is specific to the Tomb Raider franchise. They are upset that SE/CD decided to "snub" them in exchange for money. They say that if the situation were reversed -- if for example, they were Xbox gamers, and Bioware signed an 1-year exclusivity agreement with Sony for Mass Effect 4 -- they would feel the same and do the same. But they are PS gamers, and so they feel upset about the Tomb Raider deal. I guess that makes sense to me.

Maybe these are guys who played lots of Tomb Raider on PS in the past and are big fans of the franchise. So, I get why people were upset initially. The part I don't get is why they're still feeling that way a year later. That's a long time to hold a grudge. I just don't take stuff like this personally. I've got bigger things to take personally, lol.

But hey, it's gamers, and it's the internet. Someone is always outraged about something. I wonder if it'll have an effect on sales, or whether it's just a very small minority.

Sounds good. Might pick it up down the road when it drops in price. There are so many games coming out as is for the Fall/Winter.

You should play Rise of the Tomb Raider as soon as possible. Such a great game.
Its coming to PS4 with added features, so I think waiting a while is worth it. There are enough game from now to then to keep us busy,

I've been playing Tomb Raider Definitive Ed. over the past two weeks and it is such a good game! I'm about 4 levels left and I've had a great time. High production values and the title is just fun like a video game should be.

I'm buying Rise of Tomb Raider next to support developer. I want more games like this made. (I'm almost going to buy TR 2013 for a friend)

Just a warning, when you start the Yoji Yo-yo Diablo witch quest, there are some scary jumpy bits.

My sphincter could have made a diamond.

Intelly has decided not to buy a game on the PS4. There's a surprise.

Finally finished the game a couple weeks ago, such an amazing game I just wish my play time wasn't so spread out as I wasn't as invested in the story as I could of been. What I really liked was the various audio tapes you pick up over the world there were some really interesting stories told especially towards the end of the game.

Graphics and animations are top notch and some amazing back drops to soak in too. 9/10

Because you can get it on Xbox One for cheaper.
I'm not sure where you are from but here in the US the Xbox version of the same game is $69.99 right now. The PS4 version was announced at $59.99.

Oh, they're actually releasing a physical disc version of this game (the Anniversary edition) on the Xbox? I didn't realize that -- thus my joke about Intelly buying one. I thought the physical disc was only appearing on PS4, and Xbox owners would get the additional content online for a minimal charge.

Now that I think about it, it makes sense that they'd put out a physical version on Xbox. However, it doesn't make sense that they'd price it at $70. That's weird.

I've never seen it $70 anywhere. I was going to sell mine on eBay to get the PS4 version and they rarely sell for over $20 used. I looked into pricing elsewhere and it's usually priced at $40 or lower brand new and sometimes being on sale at Best Buy for $25.

I'm a little confused, but I believe we're talking about the 20th Year Celebration edition, the new version, being priced at $70, not the original version.

I looked on amazon but didn't see a listing for the Xbox version.

Traded my copy in earlier today and got $22. Figured i'd dump it since it's not going to be worth anything soon with the PS4 version coming out and it's just getting old.

Here is where I got the pricing, from Xbox.com:

View media item 1119

Hmm! Pricey. It says "bundle." I wonder if it's bundled with something, and that's why it's $10 more? The season pass content is all included, so that wouldn't be it.

Or maybe it's just a misprint. It's hard to believe they'd price it at $70, when Xbox owners can just download the additional content for a few bucks (I'm guessing $10 to $15).

The game is $39.99 and the season pass is $29.99. Both of which are included in the PS4 port.

Not sure what is going on unless a price drop is incoming for the Xbox One version.

That makes sense then. I only buy indie games online and buy everything else retail, so that didn't even occur to me.

I took a week long break from the game, and felt like I'd forgotten the nuances to the controller/game.

Seriously, one of the best games I've played this gen. Trying to finish dlc before the !Ain story. I don't want it to end. The next game I have to finish is CoD 3. :(
